let me start by stating that this movie is a breakthrough, a real classic...

that said, its charm lies in areas of it where logic, just simply doesn't exist... case in point: Paul Kersey wen't downstairs to shoot the creeps... then Bennet awaits him while he's coming DOWN the stairs...

You raise a very significant issue here. Let's put this theory to the test. The only other way this would make sense is if the Kaprovs lived in the basement. BUT, we know the Kaprovs live on the first floor since Bennett said so earlier in the scene. However, Bennett also loads bullets backwards into machine guns, so we're not sure how reliable he is. But because we see creeps break into the Kaprov's window in another scene, your theory is proved correct. Excellent, excellent work here.

Perhaps... perhaps he extinguished the thieves, then went upstairs to put his gun away before rejoining the group in the kaprovs' apartment. Upon returning from upstairs (putting gun away), his friend found him coming back to dinner (on a lower floor than his apartment).
