  • This method implies you actually know what you're doing in nTTY.

A non-TTY way would be to open nautilus as admin, go to File System/usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWIndow and put whatever you want to autorun in there. Example: Drag the "Appearance" menu entry into the window, then log out. Appearance comes up.

It's really awesome and even more flexible for a noob that way.

  • Now all you need to do is go and download a program called "Ubuntu tweak" and use it to change the logo-in screen... It's way easier now.

  • You don't have to do all this just right click on you desktop Create Launcher ...

    Command ... is

    gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties

it is way easier than this ...

  • In 9.10 you could just do this

Just right click on you desktop Create Launcher

    give it any NAME

    For the command use

    gksu nautilus /usr/share/images/xsplash

click o.k. and your done you now have a short cut... and change the image

  • Hi there after using your commands to change my login theme and login in only 40% of my screen is displayed in form of a square the rest is all dark is displays the screensaver fine but and when i log off i can see the full display but when i log back on the display shows me only a little square of about 40% is there a way of fixing this?

  • Hello,Where i can find those background?wallpapers?Please

  • I can get into the control center with no problems, but the Appearances button has the exact same features as the right click on dekstop --> Change desktop background (with the tabs, themes, fonts etc but no log in screen or alike tab)

  • what kind of docking system are you using?

i am currently using SimDock any other you might recommend?

  • Its Avant Window Navigator

  • gnome do is probably the best

  • @MTMGmr1991 Gnome Do

  • How did you set up the dual monitor

  • I have a NVIDIA 9600 GT card. I set up the dual monitors in Nvidia X Server settings

  • when i hit ctrl+alt+f1, i got a black screen saying "digital input: cannot display this video mode".....what's wrong?

  • When i try to type my password nothing shows up when i type.

    Whats wrong?

  • plug in your keyboard

  • its designed not to show anything its just the way linux is, just type your pass normally and hit enter and it will work

  • i get error user unknown

  • There is a easy way that you can do while being logged in. If anyone has problems send me a message.

  • Why have they made it so hard, i just cant be bothered anymore

  • @dale456654 The reason is to allow faster boot times. Notice how much faster it is!!!

  • @hunterdogcat7 I thought that was because of ext4.

  • @dale456654 'They' is 'us' - if you want you can make it easier yourself and share, or wait for someone else to do it.

BTW - they didn't make it hard; it's hard by nature, they just didn't get around to making it easy (after making it better) yet for the rest of... us. lol

    Linux Power!

  • @fourdotsYT This is way harder to change the log-in... it is so much easier in 9.04... in 9.04 you just done load a theme like 73364-ubuntu-black.tar.gz to your home folder....

open System / Administrator and open the Local tab then click add... oooo hard...

  • @maw88ify Yes it was easier. But it changed to make booting faster -it was deemed more important to more people, than changing the theme on your login screen(still possible with minor effort)

    Advice:

    Log an issue on launchpad.

Get comfortable with the console,it's really not that difficult.

Got it working in under 10 seconds.

Sometimes its even better than a GUI;e.g. getting help online, it's easier to copy-paste a couple of commands, than to read through long mayb wrong descriptions/screenshots

  • @fourdotsYT It was more important to what people did they ask you ?

I know they didn't ask me...

But did you try what I said... when your logged in you can use

    gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties

it does the same thing , it changed the log-in screen

How do I make the log-in box transparent, where is it saved so I can change it ?

I want the box to be transparent not white ..

  • can't you just go to System>Pref>Appearances?

  • p.s., it's assumed that you know how to copy files to your /usr/share/backgrounds folder prior to typing the command.

  • it would be much easier to open up a terminal window and type gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties Not sure what the use of the 30 steps is....seems unnecessarily labour intensive.

  • it helped me a lot better

  • I don't know how you did what you did, but your instructions lead to the desktop background options...

  • Yes. That now controls your login background as well

  • I get :unknown user: u -gdmgnome-control-centre

I go to do it again and all the previous terminal information is there and option to login is gone... help would be great mate!

    thanks

  • Sorry. The command was wrong in the description. Its fixed now. The command is sudo gdm gnome-control-center

  • Yep that did it. Thanks mate!

  • Hey mate didnt work for me, I entered both the codes, and the first 1 did nothing and the 2nd also did nothing, I copied them to the terminal so they were done correctly.

was there any steps u didnt mention and did because mine isnt working like yours. Yes i am running 9.10

  • @abnashdillon same with me
