It's illegal to throw your TV or computer in the trash. You must take it to a recycling center that accepts e-waste.
Crushing and smashing of the TV will cause the hazardous materials to be released into the surrounding area, and a leaching process occurs as a result of this TV breakage. These toxic materials will eventually find their way to you, and they will be absorbed through your lungs and skin.
When the TV glass is crushed, the lead-bearing particles become an airborne hazard.
I dont know, it would have been silly of those people to throw it away if it wasnt. Then again, its not good to throw it in the trash either way, but thats what they paid me to do...
You know what I do, I may be 11 but my friend and I go and find tv's and computers and break them open and get out copper. Some computer monitors have gold in them and wires can be stripped for copper.
This one was bad.. that should not have gone in a garbage truck, here if someone puts a TV or appliance out or something, they leave it sit there and don't take it, it should be like that all over. All that lead going into the landfill, TVs generally contain I think around 4-8 pounds of lead each, and this one is a larger TV!
I hear you and agree completely, but unfortunately things dont work like that around here. They paid for me to put that TV in my truck, and I did.Until the City grows some balls and starts passing some ordinances or something,we will continue to provide the service that people expect, and you know how inconsiderate of such things people can be if allowed.
They put the logo on most of them, usually as they are switched out for repairs or something. They generally dont go and round up carts just to put the logo on though, not worth the effort.
Every city has collection times for bulky items throughout the year.
Lazy, uninformed, or just non-compliant residents are not only in violation of city ordinences, but also have absolutely no excuse for what they place on the curb.
I'm not saying "search every trash can" but, a water heater? And I might add, "No fuckin' Christmas trees!!"
I am not disagreeing with you, what you are saying makes perfect sense, but it works differently here, not like most places. There are often 5 or 6 trash companies with customers on the same street. If I tell them I cant or wont do something, they can call someone else who will.I get paid by the stop, thus I want as many customers as I can handle.
The city needs to step in and create better laws.Mandatory recycling,a seperate yard waste pickup, and a bulky waste pickup schedule (does not currently exist here),are all needed.Trust me,I would rather not put all those appliances and reusable stuff in my truck, but until the situation changes,I do what I do.
"sanitation collector". Think about your job title; ie keyword "sanitize". To collect micro organisms, bacteria, & similiar items. Water heaters, t.v.'s of any size, household appliances (ovens), wooden furniture, & etc. are definately not acceptable. Now, if these items are first going through a recycling transfer station, where metal items would be removed prior to going to a landfill, then I could see your point.
Does anyone know if that tv was a Sony? Sure looked like it. The flat picture tube tells me that it's fairly new; i.e., less than 5yrs. old. What a waste. Besides, all metropolitan areas would consider this a "bulky item", & charge a fee to pick it up, along with a designated time of year. The resident could've either: a.) arranged a free e-waste pick-up. or b.) Taken the item to a local collection facility.
Or c.) set it at the curb because they know their trashman is the kind of guy that will take anything. There are no special times of the year for bulky waste around here, either they break the stuff down or pay extra or just set it out and see what happens. You get dedicated customers by taking care of them, and thats what I do :)
Usually a Labrie or Wittke msl.I hate those trucks, they are always breaking down, and their shop sucks.I worked there from 2000 to 2003.If you look around you can see where they are always leaving hydraulic oil stains everywhere on the route.
Thats one of my pet peeves,I dont like to leave oil or garbage juice stains at my stops. Its normal for WM drivers to just keep running the route when the truck is leaking, until it stops working.
It is awfully hypocritical of them to be so environmentally irresponsible here when they have stickers on their trucks with a bunch of blah blah blah about how they saved a million trees or something. What about all the water they are polluting, the fish and other animals they are killing off?
Yeah, I know all about WM! They only care about putting on a good show for their stockholders. They underbid everyone to the point they run the little guys out of business, then they buy them up cheap. They can afford to underbid everyone because they cut every corner they can get away with! They run FLs and ASLs here and I have yet to see one with good rear seals. I have learned to never get behind a WM truck on the freeway or you get covered in garbage juice!
I work with a private research organization that says WM's slogans are just hot air! Amongst other things, a local WM transfer facility was observed dumping the recyclables into transfer trucks and hauling them to the Sunset landfill. I understand they were doing this to somehow cheat on the numbers. I agree about the Labrie & Wittke trucks, I have not heard very good things about either of them but, you can by them @ surplus for cheap, another WM method of undercutting. No wonder they leak.
Given the title you gave this vid, "seek and destroy" by metallica would have been a great song to put over this clip. Another stellar performace from you.

the leaded glass is only in projection tv's right? LCD and Plasma I thought were less toxic...
SunTzuLao 2 years ago
CRT televisions and monitors of all kinds have leaded glass. Also, most LCD screens are lit with mercury-containing fluorescent lights.

I would have fixed and resold the TV
chrisstv1979 3 years ago
That certainly would have been better than sending it to the landfill for sure, but I'm just doing what the customers want, it is their choice!
