  • ELECTRO-VOICE RE27 sounds the best but the only reason it beats all the others is because its only completion was the NEUMANN - TLM127 and that one overall sounded better but it picked up the hi hat and snare to much.

  • Audix d6 is the winner

  • Is that a 24" Kick?

    Bill

  • the re-27 sounded best to my ears.

  • hey thanks for this post, very interesting. Keep em coming

  • the best is EA DM 104

  • Where is the beta 52?

  • is that subkick you made just an empty wooden speaker box (without the speaker in it) and just a mic put in the middle of it? Cos i would wanna do something like that myself!

  • @jcw3032 you do need the speaker. (like the yamaha version). the speaker cone serves as the diaphragm and captures the super low frequencies. sub kicks are best used in conjunction with other mics on the kick if you have the means. even just like a sm57 to capture the attack and such.

  • Jamming the mic in the port hole like that always sounds like crap.Note that the neumann is the only mic positioned away from the bass drum giving it some room to breath(and obviously sounds the best).I attribute it's superior sound to placement as much as the fact that it's a great mic.You could always stick a mic much closer to the flapper as well to pick up more attack(use two mics).

  • I agree. Neumann was by far the best (may have to roll off the top end since it's picking up more snare)). Of course, one has to consider the price... One could also ask for a Heil PR40 and the 48. And how about a Mojave 201Fet? Some would use a TLM 103 if we're going to try 'non-traditional' drum mics here too. But thanks for posting

  • Like other people have said, the Neumann beats everything in terms of what SOUNDS good, but who knows if it would have enough "punch" in the mix? Own a D112 myself...sounds pretty similar here. Would have liked to seen a Beta 52.

  • I might go with the EA DM-140 or the Neuman TLM-1237

  • I can hear alot of air hitting the mics - so position them a little out of the hole instead of inside it. Also, the porthole is located kinda wierd - and it's pretty large too.

  • neumann non plus ultra

  • Thanks for sharing! Perhaps, one thing missing was a clip of the MD-441 inside the bass drum. The MD-441 is a dynamic mic and produces great results inside, rather than outside - for outside you usually go to condenser mics and a subkick.

  • The Neumann and your homemade sub mic tied for first place, with the Sennheiser 421 coming in second. The rest didn't do anything for me, though it's hard to tell without hearing them in the mix.

  • Quick question. What pre are you using for the mics?

  • 2 of my favourite kick drums aren't here: Audix D6 and Shure Beta 52!

  • this may sound really stupid but where do you plug the mic into to get the sound out?

  • @foREVeroli97 He owns/works in a studio probably. So it would go Mic > Preamp > Console/Converter > DAW (Probably ProTools)

  • @thejohnlaco cheers:)

  • i think the neumann sounds the best

  • All bass drum mics sound bad when listened to them soloed. You should always listen to these microphones together with the rest of the drum mics.

  • @goreri

    Gotta disagree.

The mics here would sound MILES better with different positioning. Something which somewhat very few people consider, or write about in audio engineering articles etc. is directly miking the batter head from outside the drum, pointing staright at the beater. Huge low end+nice "fap".

I find when you just put the mics in the hole like that the sound is boring and murky. Yet 90% of people do it.

  • I prefer the SM-7

  • Why you leave out in this bass drum mike test the Shure Beta 52?

  • what ride is that?

  • You guys should consider n Audix D6 or a Shure beta 52.

  • The RE20 is the best bet inside the drum if you EQ it right. It has been an industry standard for 30 years. Very versatile mic.

  • not gonna lie these all sound pretty bad. either that or you need to position them better / EQ them

  • @Theshamham Hey . well its in purpose that no eq or compression where applied - positioning better is always a good thing :)

everything recorded flat . no mastering either.

  • @kobifarhiMusic idk alot of them sound like someone slapping a bass drum head. That Neumann tlm-127 is pretty cool though.

  • @kobifarhiMusic how can i add 'eq' and 'compression' please? what are they aswell haha check out my channel i made a video recorded with a cheap mic, sounds pretty bad

  • @Theshamham Why would he want to process the recorded sound from all the mics if he is doing a comparison? He wants to show you what all microphones sound like dry.

  • @Theshamham You should always try and get the best sound before doing anything 'in the box' moving a mics positioning is a natural approach to EQ, don't rely on plug ins to save your mix. A good sound will always start at your microphone choice and placement

  • The equation audio mic really gives me the sound im looking for, great vid!

  • how can u exclude Audix D6?! it iiis the best kick mic today under 1000 dollars.

  • yea i think neumann won this one

  • awesome subkick.

  • audix d6? i love the d112 sound. not a fan of the mic placement in this though. Not really getting the full sound envelope with sticking mics inside the bass drum. its almost kind of like a blip sound.

  • NUEMAN SOUNDS THE BEST!

  • Are you sure that the equation audio mic is called the DM-104? or is it the MTD-104? Cause I cant find the model for DM-104 at all.. but I found the MTD-104

  • @azombiestool You are right! weird that no one noticed that b4 thank you I will soon wright that in the annotations

  • beta 52??

  • Neuman TLM sounds great

  • wow that DM-104 setup would probably fit best for metal wouldn't it? real clicky

  • Neumann TLM-1237 1:00 sounds good for Break Beats

  • Audix D6 ALL THE WAY!!! Just add a transient designer, scooped eq and a solid state compressor = ;-)

  • Would sound great with the Equation inside to get the attack and the Neumann outside to get the low end resonance. The Rode NT2 works great for external micing a kick drum if you can't afford a Neumann or a C414!

  • Need to also add in here the Audio D6, Sennheiser e602 and Sennheiser e902 since those are actual bass drum microphones. Out of those presented, the Neumann was by far the best, but also have to consider that it's shock mounted and positioned to capture more of the reso head (getting tone and attack) whereas the dynamic mics used were put in the hole thus capturing more attack and much less tone.

  • @simmsdn Its a good comment - Hopefully Ill make new videos with other mics and positioning . Thanks .

  • This is a damn useful video.

    Many thanks!

  • 1:00 is good

  • Neumann TLM and DM104 :)

  • I liked the AKG and the Neumann best, with the Neumann sounding just a little bit better to me. Very informative video, thanks!

  • niceeeeeeeeeee@!!!!

  • Shure 52(a) would kill all them mics

  • The AKG takes it.

  • audix D6

  • where is the AUDIX D6?

  • I like either the D112 or the TLM 127. If I had to choose one, I would pick the TLM 127.

  • personally the AKG D-112 sounds best, it has some ring to it rather than just the kick sound. the EA DM-104 is second best but that sennheiser is just crap, sorry lol

  • @PRL2204 i meant the D-112 has some ring to it rather than just the kick pedal sound.

  • EV is pretty good so as DM104 has nice click for rock sound.

  • This is a great video

  • Great video man thank you! If you dont mind me asking, how much was the DM-104? I can't seem to find it online.

  • ...and the Shure Beta52a??

  • Only EQUATION didn't sound like shit.

  • WOW!!! I love the EA DM-104!!! I think I might have to pick that up!!

  • Wow ... i think the low factor mic gave more punch... don't think i would use any of these as my fav kick mic... altho i use a ATM25 batter, D6 inside and a TGX50 or R102 MKII Ribbon in front.. enjoyed the sample Thanks AudioHipster

  • No Beta 52? I understand. it would have been unfair to the other mics.

  • I like the equation best and neuman 2nd best but for the money the equation is a steal!

  • it is simple neumann is the best.....but better take more distance from the bass

kit...and I think mic in to the hole.....sound bad...

  • do you think that a Blue baby bottle would make a good Kick mic?

  • @gitarnerd I guess it would be ok, but might lack the low end of some other mics . could be nice to try it for a jazz kit .

  • @kobifarhiMusic I have the baby blue. I don't recommend it. Usually condenser mics aren't meant for high dB/SPL situations.

  • do you think that a blue Baby bottle would make a good kick drum mic?

  • that Equation audio mic has a nice presence rise that seems to bring out that 3-5 khz snap, great sounding mic -thanks for this helpful video

  • EV RE-27 0:10

    AKG D112 0:20

    Shure SM-7 0:35

    Sennheiser MD-441 0:49

    Neumann TLM-1237 1:00

    EA DM-104 1:12

    Homemade 1:29

  • That home made sub kick would sound great combined with another mic. It picks up a really powerful low-end, and with the help of another mic to bring out some mids it would sound perfect.

  • is the intro song change the world by eric clapton?

  • @MrYeswecan14 yep

  • Equation Audio one is pretty sweet, but a homemade subkick plus an SM57 always works

  • Neumann is the best in my opinion.

  • The neumann is awesome but it´s fuckin expensive!

  • @Kevinkoch2443 I agree. but it still gives you an idea of how a LDC can sound on a kick. most cheap LDC's could do the trick with a litle boost on the lower frequencies

  • thanks for uploading this video.. very2 useful... appreciated your effort guys.. :)

  • That Equation audio mic would be great for metal kick drum recording.

  • @FormationOfficial- definitely... and for its price its a nice option...

  • Great video!!! Excellent comparison!!! Thanks for your time!!!

  • @Blazerota- Your most welcome - stay tuned for more videos soon .

  • re 27 for attack, 127 for body!

  • nice body with the 127, take the attack from the RE-27 et voilas....

or....well, to ur taste i guess!

    cool vid thanks!

  • SM7 on the inside with a U47 on the outside.

  • I like the Neumann the most.

  • i vouch for d6.

whenever i use it, no matter where my bass drum is, it ALWAYS sounds perfect. It's as if Audix knew how I like my bass drum to sound.

I've gotta say though, in this video - Equation Audio takes the win.

  • @aidanyoubetterreply Definitely.

  • dm104

  • Where is the D6 and Beta52?????

  • Where is the D6 and Beta52?????

  • Well you could also ask where is the sm91/re20/d421/d12... its just too many mics ...and not enough time! I can also assure you theres a lot of videos on those popular mics in Youtube. The main idea is to shopw how different those mics sound , Maybe later on ill do new drums videos with other mics.

  • @kobifarhiMusic but those are 2 of the most popular bass mics right now!

  • @Buhzie15 I agree! maybe its another reason why .. i guess people have many ocassion to heare those on a kick .

Here you got a chance to hear more options. hopefully ill do more videos soon .

  • I like the 127, 104 and home made sub....the 112 is not bad, ,,,,,i actually want all of them...they all sound so different. But 127 stands out for my liking

  • Holy cow man! I have been looking for info on bass mics and this was great! the last few i really liked....good for rock IMO. Were these flat, untouched kick tracks? Right now i use SM57 for kick...but i don't think that is working for rock sound kick...what you think?

  • All the tracks are flat and untouched. The 57 is a great mic but for kick in a rock setup i would prefer a d112/d6/beta 52 etc for the extra low end. a good trick is using two mics- one close to the beater(the 57 is a good coice for that purpose) and another one in front of the drum at the oposite side for the low frequencies - than you can use both mixed to taste.

  • @kneedragger81 with a good preamp - you can get a great rock kick sound with an sm57. you will need some EQ and compressing but it will do the trick .
