ELECTRO-VOICE RE27 sounds the best but the only reason it beats all the others is because its only completion was the NEUMANN - TLM127 and that one overall sounded better but it picked up the hi hat and snare to much.
is that subkick you made just an empty wooden speaker box (without the speaker in it) and just a mic put in the middle of it? Cos i would wanna do something like that myself!
@jcw3032 you do need the speaker. (like the yamaha version). the speaker cone serves as the diaphragm and captures the super low frequencies. sub kicks are best used in conjunction with other mics on the kick if you have the means. even just like a sm57 to capture the attack and such.
Jamming the mic in the port hole like that always sounds like crap.Note that the neumann is the only mic positioned away from the bass drum giving it some room to breath(and obviously sounds the best).I attribute it's superior sound to placement as much as the fact that it's a great mic.You could always stick a mic much closer to the flapper as well to pick up more attack(use two mics).
I agree. Neumann was by far the best (may have to roll off the top end since it's picking up more snare)). Of course, one has to consider the price... One could also ask for a Heil PR40 and the 48. And how about a Mojave 201Fet? Some would use a TLM 103 if we're going to try 'non-traditional' drum mics here too. But thanks for posting
Like other people have said, the Neumann beats everything in terms of what SOUNDS good, but who knows if it would have enough "punch" in the mix? Own a D112 myself...sounds pretty similar here. Would have liked to seen a Beta 52.
I can hear alot of air hitting the mics - so position them a little out of the hole instead of inside it. Also, the porthole is located kinda wierd - and it's pretty large too.
Thanks for sharing! Perhaps, one thing missing was a clip of the MD-441 inside the bass drum. The MD-441 is a dynamic mic and produces great results inside, rather than outside - for outside you usually go to condenser mics and a subkick.
The Neumann and your homemade sub mic tied for first place, with the Sennheiser 421 coming in second. The rest didn't do anything for me, though it's hard to tell without hearing them in the mix.
The mics here would sound MILES better with different positioning. Something which somewhat very few people consider, or write about in audio engineering articles etc. is directly miking the batter head from outside the drum, pointing staright at the beater. Huge low end+nice "fap".
I find when you just put the mics in the hole like that the sound is boring and murky. Yet 90% of people do it.
@kobifarhiMusic how can i add 'eq' and 'compression' please? what are they aswell haha check out my channel i made a video recorded with a cheap mic, sounds pretty bad
@Theshamham Why would he want to process the recorded sound from all the mics if he is doing a comparison? He wants to show you what all microphones sound like dry.
@Theshamham You should always try and get the best sound before doing anything 'in the box' moving a mics positioning is a natural approach to EQ, don't rely on plug ins to save your mix. A good sound will always start at your microphone choice and placement
audix d6? i love the d112 sound. not a fan of the mic placement in this though. Not really getting the full sound envelope with sticking mics inside the bass drum. its almost kind of like a blip sound.
Are you sure that the equation audio mic is called the DM-104? or is it the MTD-104? Cause I cant find the model for DM-104 at all.. but I found the MTD-104
Would sound great with the Equation inside to get the attack and the Neumann outside to get the low end resonance. The Rode NT2 works great for external micing a kick drum if you can't afford a Neumann or a C414!
Need to also add in here the Audio D6, Sennheiser e602 and Sennheiser e902 since those are actual bass drum microphones. Out of those presented, the Neumann was by far the best, but also have to consider that it's shock mounted and positioned to capture more of the reso head (getting tone and attack) whereas the dynamic mics used were put in the hole thus capturing more attack and much less tone.
personally the AKG D-112 sounds best, it has some ring to it rather than just the kick sound. the EA DM-104 is second best but that sennheiser is just crap, sorry lol
Wow ... i think the low factor mic gave more punch... don't think i would use any of these as my fav kick mic... altho i use a ATM25 batter, D6 inside and a TGX50 or R102 MKII Ribbon in front.. enjoyed the sample Thanks AudioHipster
That home made sub kick would sound great combined with another mic. It picks up a really powerful low-end, and with the help of another mic to bring out some mids it would sound perfect.
@Kevinkoch2443 I agree. but it still gives you an idea of how a LDC can sound on a kick. most cheap LDC's could do the trick with a litle boost on the lower frequencies
Well you could also ask where is the sm91/re20/d421/d12... its just too many mics ...and not enough time! I can also assure you theres a lot of videos on those popular mics in Youtube. The main idea is to shopw how different those mics sound , Maybe later on ill do new drums videos with other mics.

kneedragger81 1 year ago 4
All the tracks are flat and untouched. The 57 is a great mic but for kick in a rock setup i would prefer a d112/d6/beta 52 etc for the extra low end. a good trick is using two mics- one close to the beater(the 57 is a good coice for that purpose) and another one in front of the drum at the oposite side for the low frequencies - than you can use both mixed to taste.
