  • Mr. Droste is very handsome!!

  • I love Ed! :-)

  • Patriarchy doesn't make distinction between gay and straight men so I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable with an all-male group covering this particular song.

  • Who exactly in this comment section is talking about his sexuality being a bad thing? People are so damn quick to jump on the white knight bandwagon. I don't even think Ed had his sexuality in mind when he decided to cover this song, it's just a damn good song that deserved a Grizzly Bear cover.

  • Amy Winehouse liked this song

  • @JayMalone Obvious troll is Obvious

  • Are you sure this isn't a carousel reference?

  • @ChineseKiwi:

The song's inspiration came from King & co-writer Gerry Goffin's babysitter who confided her boyfriend was abusing her & it felt partly a confirmation of love (a complex dynamic in abuse). Phil Spector shaped & produced the song for The Crystals but neither he nor a Crystals band member were party to the referenced phys violence. The babysitter later became known as Little Eva of "The Loco-Motion" fame (also inspired by Eva when babysitting).

  • Just to let you peeps know: Hole IS NOT the original of this song. The song is an original by 1960's girl group The Crystals. It was written by Carol King and describes Phil Spector's relationship with one of the members of the girl group. American music history..mmmmmm...

  • Que se avispe la gente de Lotus y que los traigan para el próximo lollapalooza Chile...

  • id bang em all, especially ed..and i have a girl! his voice just makes me wet, in the gooch

  • wow. i heard this song on the radio a few days ago and i just needed to look it up.

This is such a hauntingly beautiful song.

  • woo

  • What has someone's sexuality got to do with anything at all?

  • What's really important is that Mr. Droste is a great singer.

  • this song is terrifyingly awesome

  • Oh yeah, gimme some more Lydian, boys.

    One of my favourite modes/scales.

  • When it comes to music, they're is no such thing as gay or straight. It really doesn't matter. Your either going to enjoy it or not. I didn't know he was gay; I just found out. Do I still love this song? fuck yee, its beautiful. :]

  • i mean it really doesnt matter, nd i dont see why so many people negatived it when it was just a question lol

  • Words cannot describe how excited I am about this! Oh god, this is the greatest thing ever.

  • Gay doesn't matter, I don't discriminate, so there's still a chance for me~

  • the arguments on here are those of very young people.

  • I fucking love this song.

  • This songs awesome who cares if hes gay ever heard of freedom??

  • why do gay people like to argue.. all of you are acting gay. but i would say that i like their music but i dont wanna hear about his buisness. but hey whatever.

  • while the judgmental ignorant argue about anything else, I just absorb and totally embrace them and their beautiful music...

  • beautiful boys

  • Speaking from the other side of the fence, concerning this whole Ed Droste being gay thing, I want to say that while as I personally don't believe gay marraige and all that is right (which is a whole seperate conversation of course), I don't see why you can't listen to his music, for those of you expressing offence. I think he's a talented musician, fantastic singer, and seems like a good guy. I don't agree with his morals, but that doesn't mean I dislike him as a person. Just a thought.

  • @dancepartyaesthetics what does being gay have to do with morals?

  • @89013344 I just mean that part of what I believe is that being gay isn't the way it's supposed to be. I know that's radical to many people, since it's an unpopular opinion, it's just my opinion. Like I said though, I don't think there should be judging either way. I disagree with the decision, but it's not as if I have something agianst him. I have friends that are gay so that's not it.

  • @dancepartyaesthetics Inherent in your statement is judgment. It doesn't matter if you have gay friends, who cares? Let me flip the script for a second to show you. Suppose I say, "I believe being black isn't the way it's supposed to be. I don't think there should be judging either way. I disagree with the decision." I would be an idiot. Being born black isn't a choice just as being born gay isn't a choice. In no way is your opinion radical - I think the word you were looking for is dumb

  • @gaiablue24

Also, I respect your opinion, but you assume we agree being gay is inhernt at birth, for which there is little proof on your side or mine, so my opinion stands VALID. Whether or not it is TRUE we agree to disagree. There are not intrinsically 'dumb' opinions, there's well-founded opinions and otherwise. Judgement is not inherent in what I said either, I don't have to judge to hold a different opinion. Enough said, there's no reason to have a debate on a youtube vid. Let's be mature

  • @dancepartyaesthetics I don't actually believe the argument of choice or being born is necessary. Nor do I want to argue about the morality of being gay, or black in case you're a racist too. The main point I want to say is that your statement is full of hate. You are hateful when you write that. At least admit your hate. Saying the love gays feel isn't the way it's supposed to be is hateful. It's the reason gays so often kill themselves. Your statement is full of judgment and hate.

  • @gaiablue24 And you're judging someone for their opinion. You simply cannot compare being black to being actively homosexual. One is a genetic trait and the other is not. Men can love men and women can love women without having sex. I love my Dad and my brother, and several of my friends so dearly, but that doesn't mean I have to have sex with them. LOVE IS NOT SEX. Damn!

People become sexually attracted to children and animals. Seriously. Are people born attracted to tentacle porn comics?

  • @ieatstuffoffthefloor Thanks gaia. I detest being labeled as hateful, when all I was trying to communicate is that his being gay should not be a reason to lower value of the singer as a person nor as an artist (as some were insinuating it should be). I pointed out my opinion because I hoped it would further show I say that because I'm sincere, not because I'm tramping around to make a point for gayrights, and that you don't have to agree with someone to appreciate the beauty they've created.

  • @gaiablue24 But before you try to flip on me, I will say that I don't really care who is gay and who isn't. I am here listening to Grizzly Bear because I like the band and respect each of the members.

I just have a certain lack of respect for those who don't understand basic human psychology, and through their lack of knowledge begin to point fingers at other people. Sex releases DOPAMINES, just like FOOD, and POT. You become habitually inclined to different sensory signals that release them.

  • love this band!!!

  • My god, the singer has a lovely voice.

  • no we all dont mind he's a gay or not . all i care about is their music .

  • fuck courney love, fuck er. i hate her.

  • the guitar part, or rather the sound of the guitar in this cover sounds very much like another grizzly bear song, but i just can't think of which one...maybe two weeks, maybe knife, probably not either.....ughhh someone help me out here.

  • @ZoeKatherineProject never mind, definately cheerleader. lol. same exact guitar in the middle of this song as the intro of cheerleader, am i right or wrong?

  • @ZoeKatherineProject prob cheerleader and maybe knife. i love grizlly bear this is one of their best songs :)

  • @ZoeKatherineProject cheerleader?!

  • @JBC16 yeah listen at like 1:47 for a bit and then listen to the beginning of the song cheerleader....i promise it's the same ;)

  • @ZoeKatherineProject lol this whole song sounds like cheerleader haha and a little bit of While You Wait For The Others and Fine For Now...if this song was recorded before Veckatimest I'd say that they def used this as a root for their other songs

  • I didn't even realise this was a cover until now, but I have to say it is one of my fave songs of theirs..its just so hauntingly beautiful..and eve tho it was originally sung by women, I think its still fitting because Ed is gay(before I knew this was a cover I thought it was a gay-themed song) I mean it works as a song being about a man and a abusive boyfriend..dunno if that's why the band wanted to cover it, its a great cover anyways!!

  • @thelaw18489 it'snt true..this is better than hole version..trembling and beautiful captures the atmosphere of the original...

  • how are they so good?!

  • I cant believe that people are talking about this guys sexual life.... its got nothing to do with how amazing they are and who gives a flying fuck. THEY ARE AMAZING, END OF!

  • I wonder what Phil Spector thinks about this cover...

    I know I love it

    =)

  • @unclemeat2u Phil Spector is probably just thinking about how much it sucks to be in prison.

  • wooohh It is wonderfull, ed drost has an amazing voice

  • @secretcompartment you sound like a dirty slut.

  • This song has played an important part in me getting over quite possibly the worst boyfriend I've ever had. Thank you Grizzly Bear. You've saved me.

  • This song is soooo beautiful

  • No, it doesn't really matter that Ed is gay... But it is a bit of a disappointment with him being adorable and all. ;/

  • @ValiantUnicorn Well its not disappointment for us gay men though!

  • @willobeen I know! :P

  • Who cares if they are gay or not these guys have talent.

  • i wanna say its better than the original :D

  • beautiful major chord at 1:39. all of them have such beautiful voices

  • brilliant

  • such nice kids that grizzly bear

  • great song! =)

  • nevermind, i know

  • only the lead singer...does it make a difference really?

  • Yeah, they are gay, at least partially. But what's a big deal with that? I don't understand people giving thumbs down for these types of comments...

  • Really?

    I mean.. Really?

  • czujne ... PL

  • a bit more of a modern touch to it. like it, but it's kind of haunting when you play it this slowly.

  • What a beautiful but very eerie song... I feel guilty singing it. But, I can't stop listening to it or get it out of my head! Very pretty harmonies. Great.

  • cant find the tabs for this anywhere..

  • Doesnt matter.. i figured it out myself :)

  • was this a live version you put to this? or is it on one of their albums?

  • It's on their Friends album. A collection of odds and sods.

  • thank you!

  • This Is Amazinnnng .

  • I can totally relate to this song...I felt suicidal but this song made me think twice.

  • That's good I really hope you don't. There are people out there who care even if you may not know it.

  • maybe you should try it again. nobody likes a quitter

  • haha woooooooow!

  • Remarkable. Grizzly Bear delivers a real quality music.

  • If you really are interested and not just saying this in a derogatory way then you might be interested to hear the lead singer, Ed Droste, is gay.

If this detracts from your enjoyment of their music in anyway, then I feel I'm speaking on behalf of all of the Grizzly Bear fans when I say it's a real shame.

  • awesome. these guys are sweet live!

  • You are so awesome for finding a recorded version of this song. I am in love with it right now.

  • yeah thanks so much I was trying to find one that wasnt a live version. The guitar is amazing in this. This song is very creepy.
