ladino was the language spoken by the jews from spain, not fom the balkans.
after their expulsion in 1492, they carried on speaking spanish and to this day.
this is of incredible value for us, for from their mouth we can hear how our ancestors used to speak.
and of course, for their love and their proven attachment to our land, we love them too. they are spanish jews, simple. their blood runs through our veins, they are part of us.
Please...the Palestinians have had many opportunities for peace and to establish their own nation. Their leaders have failed them time and again. Israel has given up land more than once and did not find peace. They have no desire to occupy or oppress anyone or they would not have left the Sinai or Gaza.
Please, tell us how you find peace with people who want to wipe you off the face of the earth? Would you not respond if your town was shelled many times each day as Sderot experiences? If a wall would stop homicidal bombers, would you not build one? Please, visit Israel and walk in their shoes.
If your source for information is only the European press then you are not well informed. Better yet, travel to Israel. You might find it interesting to know that there are families there who still have the keys to their ancestral homes in Spain. There's much more to Israel than you obviously know and much to connect to your own country. How many Spaniards have a Jewish ancestor? Think about it. Music is one way to understand another culture. You viewed this video and one wonders why.
While some Spaniards will have Jewish ancestors, the "Catholic Kings" (as I'm sure you know) expelled almost 100% of the Jews in the late 15th Century.
I don't know if you realized, that's why Spaniards use 2 surnames to this day (from the father and mother) in order to identify people with Jewish mothers, so that if you were called for example, Juan Fernandez Cohen, the Inquisition would know that you were a Jew. Most Spaniards are unaware of this and assume everybody uses 2 surnames.
"Spaniards use 2 surnames to this day in order to identify people with Jewish mothers" .. Inquisition would know that you were a Jew"
You're really stretching things. Spanish law did not require the use of two surnames until the 1870 Registro Civil (Civil Registry) law required all births and deaths to be registered with civil authorities. The Inquisition didn't believe in inherited Judaism. Converted Jews were called "Conversos". It was taken for granted that they ALL had Jewish mothers.
On a "side-note", do you know the Spanish band Radio Tarifa?
They play an interesting mix of music from Andalucia and Galicia with Arab, Sephardic and medieval European influences. I'm sure you would enjoy them if you don't already know them.
They are far from the typical rubbish Spanish pop music!
Hebrew is a Semetic language and is in no way related to Germanic languages. Your inference is insulting. If you want to hear Ladino there are many videos on YouTube. Look up Yasmin Levy. She studied flamenco in Spain and may be an artist you can find some commonality with. Obviously this video was taped and narrated for a specific purpose and then posted on YouTube. Por favor, estudie antes que escribir.
oh my god, this guy is so annoying! why is he speaking. i think that ladino (unfortunately) is dying because there are too few children speaking it as a living language. I'm sorry, but a few songs sung by Turkish-Jewish children don't count.
Better than nothing, and beleive me, in the States, Ladino survives in the large cities with Sephardi populations, such as those in New Jersey, New York, California (especially L.A.) and Seattle Washington. Efforts are being made to catalog old songs. Flory Jagoda? Have you heard of her?
An answer for knightsofstjoan: She is singing in ladino. Millions of Ashkenazi Jews are speaking Yiddish and some tens of thousands speak Ladino -- mostly Sephardic Jews of Spanish, Greek and Turkish origin. No, I'm Ashkenazi Hebrew and Yiddish speaker and understand a bit Ladino and Spanish.
levinsony --with due respect you are doing harm to the ladino music. you should delete
that video where the guy is talking--very annoying and you read all comments in the same way. i know u are eskenazi...and that is why your sensitivity is nil....hope you do not take offense and do delete now. enough is enough.

Ah! ok, thanks... I guess I'd just fallen for what I'd heard years ago and assumed to be true. It sounded plausible.

I was expecting to hear a bit of Ladino. Couldn't hear a bloody thing.
Why not put subtitles instead of that boring monotone - presumably Israeli (asco! spit spit!).
