They get into an accident, and the next day are not happy to see him since he was supposed to stay sober. He let his mates down.

At the end of the ad, the driver says "Mate." to his friend in the manner of "Hey, hows it going?". This friendship is immediately rebuked when the friend replies with "Dave." implying the same, but showing that he wont be so casual around him anymore. Hope this helps lol.

Yeah it was. Not sure if you're a kiwi but "mate" is a pretty common term when you're speaking to someone. It's actually more common than using a persons name a lot of the time so to go from "mate" to "dave" shows how far he's been separated from his friends. He's not one of them anymore.
