This is seriously awesome. Love this great performance of a great track. Check out the later Chick Corea & Bobby McFerrin one also on youtube if you havent, very cool.
they are having fun here . . no doubt . . best wasy to pay tribute to Monk is to have fun (of course they play the living shit out of this as well . . )
I have no proof for this. But from the choice of drummer chick corea has made so far I'm inclined to think he wouldn't like this very in the pocket groove. He seems to prefer busy grooves that pushes the music.
Nothing against Gadd, i do think he's probably the top 3 most influencial in my generation.
Virtuoso's is certainly the word, these people are a group rather then a band and the amount of time they all have been around makes that even more extreme. It might be interesting for you to listen to their early 70's stuff, like Miles Davis "live at the Fillmore Bill Evans from that time.
For years I thought I didn't like jazz. But, after just listening to Buddy Rich play this tune, I realize I really don't care for Chick. This tune can really swing. Chick seems to noodle around with it like a precocious child.
This does not mean he's not great, a legend, etc. I'm sure he's brilliant on levels I'll never understand. But my musical "gut" feeling just falls completely flat.
I've listened to quite a bit of the Acoustic Band stuff from the early 90's. It was WAY over my head then.
As I revisit it with (hopefully) a bit more musical understanding I still don't key into it. I know this sounds harsh, but sometimes it feels like 3 virtuosos bent on impressing each other and soloing rather than constructing a lucid tune. Maybe you have some insights?
But maybe that's just it... the whole idea is about individual musical flamboyance and not necessarily this cohesive
My sense is that Corea and Berg [and other serious players] are actually intimidated by what Monk and Coltrane laid down- which is perhaps impossible to extend, as it's so developmentally complete. This results in attempts to 'do something different'. While it's fine to musically search, a player must have a deep message. I also don't hear that here.
This isn't the group with patittuci and weckle obviously but if you listen to acoustic band, listen closely to the bass solos... then you'll hear just how closely that bunch of players know and understand each other, and how cohesive they are and yet how ZEN they are when it comes to at once playing a lot of information AND never disturbing one another (but communicating fluently).
Something funny about the 'rivalry' between Chick and Keith.
Buenos Aires, 1979 or 1980. First visit of Chick to Argentina with an electric band. Great concert. Near the end Chick introduces his musicians ('XXX on bass, YYY on drums...') and he ends saying '... and my name is Keith Jarrett'. ¡Genius!
i love this song and this is my favorite version of it. though personally i would electrocute the camera crew for their negligence towards Steve Gadd (see the entire concert and youll know what i mean, especially Sicily). awesome concert though. anybody seen a dvd with it? been looking all over for it...
no . . you are totally right . . and i love 'em both . . but this kind of reminded me of the "standards" phase . . but . . yes . . comparing Chick and Keith is like comparing Picasso to Matisse or Gadd to Dejohnette.
WTH was Chick wearing?? XD

Maybe I'm just too egalitarian to understand jazz! I'm sure you guys can set me straight!
