in the 2002 Broadway revival the witch (Vanessa Williams) - ate one of the magic beans (I'm pretty sure), which then killed her.

no the beanms she swallowed didnt KILL her. they changed her back to her original form. why else would she tear off her wig revealing the gray hair and the claw under her sleeve.

a great performance. Bernadette Peters was phenomenal. "Last Midnight" is one of the best songs. I agree, No more is very underrated, and I think they pulled it off quite nicely.

I saw it on Broadway - the second play I ever saw. People actually wept after Chip Zien and Tom Aldredge got through this one. I was amazed at the reactions of that audience and I have never forgotten the power of this play. WICKED would never have happened without Into The Woods.

i think the reason Bernadette wasn't nominated for a Tony was because she only did the show for 5 months, which wasn't long enough to qualify. I know, it's a bunch of bullcrap--if there's any performance that deserves a Tony, it's Bernadette's Witch.

No, the witch doesn't die. The curse just makes her ugly again, and she vanishes, hence the smoke. In the revival, they made it a little different to show that she indeed didn't die. But yeah, she just could care less and would rather be ugly and have her powers than trying to get her point across to them.
