But the story of Aragorn and Arwen clearly also has something autobiographical in it.

(2) What is the sub-concious factor(s) that cause us to link flying with sleeping dreams?

And your questions are so interesting! I think, that we link dreams with flying because flying can be symbol of freedom - never-ending blue sky... and dreams are the same - freedom... you know, in your dreams there can happen anything, there is no end or obstacle.

And the second question... it seems like the first one.. but the factor can be colour of sky - light blue... But the answer depends on who you are asking... i think it is individual :)

@applesweeter Well I grew up believing that whenever we dream about flying, it means that we are growing, or changing in some way. Whenever I dream about flying, I can also feel and hear things close up as if I was really there. What is weird is that once I woke up shivering in the summertime when I dreamed about flying in wintertime. I don't really know if my comment answers your questions, but it is something to think about.

Flight represents freedom, sub-conciously we all long for freedom. So so many barriers that we put up for ourselves in our concious minds, its no suprise to me that alot of people dream of flight.

Ofcourse this is my opinion, and it has no scientific backing to it, but alot of people acociate flight with freedom.

@applesweeter - Dreams allow for expreriences not possible when awake. It may be part of the weightlessness one can feel when in deep sleep, when the body and conscious mind are at rest. It probably doesn't happen much for people that are restless sleepers. Some argue it's a subconscious expression of freedom/release, or seeing the big picture, not bogged down with limits only you impose. It could also be the mind expressing itself as a break from stress, or relief when the hardship has passed.

About the subconcious state during sleeping, I am more agree with you. When we are asleep, our brain will combine memories at day time into one piece in the phase of Rapid Eye Movement (REM). Sometimes, our dream will be not logical and irrational. (continue...)

@applesweeter As humans we have always looked toward the sky's and dreamt that to fly we would free of all malady and heartache; to fly is to be free and because of this we associate it with dreams. In dreams we have no body,no restraint, no "factors" upon which our existence has credited to us. In short the "factors" that you speak about are tied to each of us in the scene that we feel free in flight,look at anyone hang-gliding or skydiving they have no sadness, no pain. Just joy.
