  • Just realizing the beginning chord sounds like Brothers In Arms (Dire Straits). Cool.

  • it looks like a jupiter 8

  • You can have a very quite similar phase shifter in the original electro-Harmonix Small Stone pedal, which is around 180$ now. Not the replica, I do have both, and the original one is far better. Obviously it will be never LFO synchronized.

  • Good stuff. Check my channel for some songs using the little brother, or cousin maybe? of the Quadra, the Arp Axxe. Cheers.

  • Is this a Genesis song??

  • This noodling has great atmosphere, reminds me of a mix of Genesis' Wind and Wuthering meets Abacab. The arpeggios have that sweet analog sound!

  • You have Quadra and you're recording it with toy camera...

  • I'm wondering, how do you make the arpeggiator change patterns without touching any buttons? Is it only because of the sequence you hit the chords in? I hear it go up and down and other pattern when you just change chords?

Getting into the synth magic quadra software clone (all samples for kontakt + copy of the interface), so I'm looking for videos to learn more about it :)

  • The Quadra is so beaufiful sounding, brings tears to my eyes, that bass is f**king amazing! I think I'm in love.

  • Beautiful demo and very reminiscent of Tony Banks at his creative heights, well done and many thanks for your demo, sir!

  • Tony Banks used the QUADRA to play the solo on ABACAB!

  • This synth has SO much soul to it, that it is almost palpable.

  • Three people may be don't understand what sound synthesis is all about...

  • This is what STYX was made of.

  • YES.. THE original trip synth.

  • WANT!

  • Good vid,go to my channel and look at the Quadra I have made for Kontakt 4 by sampling my own Quadra every key and replicating the four sections -It even has a graphical interface.

    Peace x

  • !I am currently programming a virtual ARP QUADRA for the PC and MAC which has all the four sections of BASS ,STRINGS,POLY and LEAD it even has the arpeggiator and dual portamento on the lead and is starting to sound quite fantastic.

The only thing proving to be a problem is replicating the Phasor but I will get it.

Great demo of a brilliant synth.

  • ...loverly!!

  • Great sound. Thanks for posting ;-)

  • ARP Quadra - lucky if you own one, luckier if it's in tiptop working condition. Never on eBay. What a mystical beast of a synth.

  • @VisceralVoids

    There is a buy !!

  • I remember having a keyboard shop here in Cincinnati near Univeristy Of Cincy and seeing this keyboard in 78.

  • Very Nice. I remember back in '83-84 I visited east coast sound in CT 2 nights after seeing Genesis in concert. Banks used one live and I wanted it so bad. I wanted to add this one to my rig but all I could afford at the time for another synth was a Juno-106. Loved the 106 but it could not do leads like the quadra! :-)

  • Checkout: Canada Vignettes - Skier

here on youtube - that sounds very similar methinks. how groovy.

  • This is what New Order used in their early works, It has a really amazing phaser sound. It has and I would love one.

  • Nice playing and a cool synth!

  • hey man u are great!

  • That synth is very 80s Genesis.

  • GOD - I've heard that first sound in alot of my favourite films...

    So thats what they used.....GREAT!

  • I managed to persuade my employer to buy one of these - it was a dream machine at the time - the side to side bend control was great. Very natural, it still, years later seems to be a better way of controlling bend than the modern bend wheels.

  • Good work! he is using one of the pedals available to sustain the arpeggiator section of the lead synth. He then brings it in with the mixer section I own one of these and they are really unique.

  • closed my eyes and embarked on a trip through space...what beautiful sounds, and what a machine. arp quadra rules!!

  • Sounds just like something Tony Banks himself has done with his Quadra... makes me want one, too!

  • Dude play something off "The Lamb" or "Trick of The Tail"

  • Or "Abacab."

  • BAD ASS i wish i had one i would do anything for one except gay shit...lol

  • Are you sure? because I was about to make you an offer but o well..... just joking dude thanks for keeping things straight and not straight when it matters got it?

  • This machine is fantastic...I have many synths, but not ARP QUADRA.

    It is amazing.

    For me,the best analog sound.

  • lol why is the synth doing the work for you? you shouldnt have to play a track with it.

  • Dude, he's showing you the arpeggiator's functionality.

  • pink floyd synth

  • Is that Sigur Rós ?

  • Worship with an Arp? Cool.

  • yeah. he's still got it up there. it's awesome

  • my preacher brother rayborn used to play these at his church for songs....it was so awesome.

  • Tony Banks would be proud.

  • The sound of heaven?

    I think so.

  • This is not an instrument. This is a live beast and must be treated with love.

  • @emoraz I agree. I feel the same way about one or two babies in my own studio; both electronic and acoustic. My first synth as a teenager was an Arp (you guessed it) an AXXE, but it had great sound for a little cheap monosynth, wish I still had it.

  • Tasty strings and that bass is rich as well.

  • Awesome synth - that phase shifter is something else - its incredible that it can't be exactly replicated 31 years on !

Saw one of these in the London Synthesiser Centre in Kings Cross in '78 when I was getting my Axxe !

Love to own one, but fearful of the repair bills ! ...& they hardly ever come up for sale

    Thanks for posting

  • beatiful, never heard this synth before.. very 80's, reminds me of vangelis & jarre

  • Ive owned dozens of synths but never a Quad. What a truely wonderful sounding piece of analog history!

  • beautiful sound

  • genesis sound ??

  • Yes Banks used this Synth on several albums in the 80s.

  • the quadra for me is a fantastic sound machine....

  • In the early days of new order The used this Synth

  • used on 'Come Sail Away'keyboard solo by Dennis De Young

  • Nope. DeYoung didn't use the Quadra. He used mostly Oberheims and other Arp synths (Odyssey, I believe), but not the Quadra.

  • yep...dennis used the arp solina string ensemble heavily on the middle part of "come sail away"

  • zwxye here part two of my Arp Quadra posting

i have heard when the membrane switches fail on this device they are history i wonder what kind of mod can be done for this and it is a combination of arp omni Arp solo synth and something else rolled into one to compete with the sequential prophet 5

  • I remember seeing a website where someone replaced all the membrane switches with tiny momentary push button switches like you would get at radio shack. Looked ugly as hell, but it worked. The whole panel would have to be rewired, but I guess if you had the time and know how you could.

  • Dear demonstrator of Arp Quadra this is a fantastic sounding demo it sounds like it was ahead of it's time arpeggiators are going on it sounds great. this is the dream 7o's analog synth string sounds like the arp string ensemble or the arp omni this demo sounds like genesis and then there were three album.

  • quadras are "good shit", when they work, but as you say analogger, when they dont...BIG BIG bills to get fixed.

  • One day I hope to find a nice Quadra on ebay! What a gorgeous synth!

  • Hi,I love this vid.Can you tell me what effects you are using.

I have a quadra which is one of my most prized possesions.

  • I'm using a Line 6 DL-4 delay modeler - and the Quadra phase shifter of course!

  • The look reminds me of the Jupiter 8.

Man! Those strings! I love this synth more than the Jupiter now.

If I had the space and the money...

    I can only afford Korg's Poly 800 atm :).

  • Its pretty amazing that this was made as early as 1978!

  • Tony Banks first 'synthesizer' so to speak for soloing was his Hohner Pianet T with fuzz box on it. I THINK the second was the ARP pro soloist.

  • wind and wathering sound ??

  • Tony didn't get the Quadra until the Duke album.

  • That's right. ATTWT featured the Roland RS202 and Polymoog for strings and polysynth roles. On Duke and onward, I believe that his Roland VP-330 was used for the string/choir parts, with the the Quadra used for most leads. Duke definitely saw the most extensive use of the Quadra's many sections. Sonically, the 24db filters gave it an edge over the CS80 he also used alot on Duke.

  • Fantastic! That synth was such an intregal part of the Genesis sound for quite some time. I had the chance to get a Quadra awhile back but it had some issues, and I could not find anyone who could fix it. I heard that when they go dead they are REALLY dead? the phase strings are magnificent - thanks for posting.

  • I love my ARP but I really think it was a terrible idea to make the keys stick out so much further than the body of the synthesizer. That's why I am glad I have the Avatar.

  • Arp Forever!!!

  • Stunning !!!

I must get one asap! :)

  • Great stuff!

There can't be so many of these brutes left in working order.........those phased string sounds are quite unique..

Thanks very much for posting and sharing!

  • Tony banks used one for mama track great syth

  • Tony Banks used the Quadra for a lot of songs back in the Duke, Abacab years.

  • @soundmanhaven I always thought that the synth at the beginning of "Mama" was a Prophet 5. Are you sure about that?

  • @MisAnnThorpe It's either a Prophet 10 or Prophet T8, can't remember, but Banks loved the Prophet series and used the T8 and P10 live and in studio

  • Quite a machine. The bass sounds like a pipe organ. Nice noodles, too. :-)

  • this sounds superb and although it can be replicated with ease these days with a cheapo multi timbral modulae and controller keyboard, this has a fee l and sound which is unique and a je ne sais que which CANNOT be replicated :-D

  • Well said.......

  • Watch me. :D

  • This synth i so pure and sexy i think i'm falling in love with the machine!!!

  • Nice job, Very Tony Banks

  • the last bit is very BOC

  • I would have to say it is more along the lines of 70's Styx in terms of texture.

  • I don't believe Styx used this synth. They did use the Arp Odyssey, which the Quadra duplicates as one of its sections. Styx also used Oberheim syths a lot.

  • great sound1

  • Absolute control of synth and sound. Great job, probably the best I've seen on Youtube.

  • Sounds like teh introduction of a long lost Genesis song from the Abacab era. Why don't you finish it and make a album??

  • Apparently Tony Banks actually used a Quadra controlled by by a LinnDrum for the song "Mama."

  • Excellent - that synth is just soooo Genesis !

I remember being in the London Synthesiser Centre off Kings Cross in the late 70's when they took delivery of these synths - I so wanted one - & still do ! sigh...

  • YOU ARE SO LUCKY TO HAVE THAT SYNTH!

  • Lovely! Thanks for posting, you don't see many Quadra's around and probably even less people that have mastered it like you!! :-)

  • that sounds amazing

  • Excellent demo! And a great synth too. Thanks for posting.

  • Very cool! The phasing/ensemble sound reminds my a lot of the sound track for that weird animated film "Wizards".

  • Sounds great - that's one of the rare times I've seen an analog machine really do some *music* as opposed to that mind-wrenching pointless knob twisting. Thanks!

  • Very creamy...
