Great live version, great Karn playing. So classic with the screaming girls and kana script. Was that set made for this tv appearance, or their own? And who played sax?
@hoihoiwaiwai It's nice you found their music great.
But have you taken a look in history? In their early years, JAPAN was sold almost only in Japan. If those Japanese fans hadn't loved and supported them, we mignt not be able to enjoy JAPAN's music today.
When we think about it, we can appreciate them but never can critisize. Can't be arrogant. It may look odd they're screaming but they still love JAPAN's music. I think you'll understand if you watch some videos of the Beatles's concerts.
If you look at the official 'Quiet Life' video (the one where David has very white teeth and smiles alot) you will see the resemblance between David & Debbie Harry. It also feels like either the Producer or the Camera man did both of the live shoots for Japan & Blondie.
I was lucky to have met David in 2007 in person and had a long chat. I didn't ask his feeling towards any imitator, but I think he doesn't really care these days.
yep agreed, I don't think he really cares right now either but at the time he must of noticed it probably. Was it flattering or kind of a stab to the back I always wondered. I would be curious to hear his thoughts on early duran duran and the whole story about how they approached him and other band members to produce them. Hell it would be great to just hear him even talk about anything in the past music wise, he's really private.
When Quiet Life was released Sylvian was accused of being a Bryan Ferry imtation and and the album was produced by Roxy Music producer John Punter. Sylvian and Japan where unique in the late Seventies and early Eighties with far more in common with Siouxsie and the Banshees than all those "New Romantic" bands.
I've heard they tried to disassociate themselves with the new romantic scene. They were in fact doing similar music before it even had a label. The strangest thing to me about Japan is that one day in 1979 they just decided to put an end to anything glam about them and totally change. I've never seen a band change so quickly just like that.
Amazing what a long way Sylvian has come since these days. I think Japan were really hiding behind their influences back in these days and even Bryan Ferry found this level of imitation a bit creepy. But Sylvian eventually got to work in his stubborn manner and slowly forced himself to find his own voice. But this is the smoothest sound and I still love it.
Great music, we should have more of it today, bring on the 80s

@farswept The one playing sax was Jane Shorter, a music student who was enlisted to join the band for live shows (the lucky girl!) ;)
