@tryandlisten It's the original name in French. Most names in English are translations of the original, except for Asterix and Obelix, among a few others.

I don't know much about Asterix, but was curious so watching this video. I'm a little confused, he's a Gaul? They were the Celts of ancient France weren't they? I heard he was a viking. Or do I need to keep watching?

I'd read that somewhere. Apparently, they both wanted to get into animation, too, so they finally got their chance to through their own work. Isn't that cool?

I've also read that Goscinny and Uderzo got an adaptation of Asterix and the Golden Sickle canceled because it was going to use the same limited animation. In a way I'm glad they decided to jump to Asterix and Cleopatra since that particular album I feel was the point Asterix really settled in.

I agree! That period in the sixties, where they did Asterix and Cleopatra, Asterix and the Banquet (my all-time favorite Asterix book), and Asterix the Gladiator are, I feel, where the books really came into their own. I think those three books are the best they ever did. They did good books before and since then, but...

Good for them for passing on the Golden Sickle adaption because of low-quality animation! Their work deserves better! Asterix and the Vikings is very well animated.

I LOVE the Asterix books (I own almost every single one) and REALLY like the Asterix and the Vikings movie. I just hate the limited animation in this film.

I have! Probably my favorite Asterix book is Asterix and the Banquet, where they tour all of Gaul (France), buying specialities from every noteworthy town, all the while being pursued by Roman legionaries with orders to be on the lookout for them. The artwork from that period was AMAZING - very detailed.

This was the very 1st book i ever read on my own .. and i was 6yrs then .. I still have this book with me till today ..

From what I've heard, this was released in the UK and US before the books were published, so when they translated it, the names they gave were actually very original at the time. When the books came out, they changed the names again, but to better ones. It's a decent enough film, but it still feels shameful because of the fact they were making a movie without the rights. That wouldn't happen today without a billion lawsuits! God forbid they get a hold of my comics without asking!! :)

I just love at around 1:00, how they so neatly changed Asterix presenting the title of the movie into a scene of him and Obelix fighting five Romans. Good work!

@huhtime you do know that in the original (french) and most of the translations it is Panoramix... But I know people get annoyed with things differ with what they remember from their childhood... I for hate the English dubbed version because I was brought up with the dutch dubbed version...
