This is a little fucked up, i mean why just take the fin? Why not kill the shark and get some meat out of it? Whats the point in torturing it JUST for a damn fin...........
it's things like this that make me wish that the megalodon was still alive. that was the bid daddy of great whites. i'd like to see them fin one of those.
I think from the photos of landed and finned sharks I've seen in certain photos, there is clearly an element of targeting them for their fins, not purely by-catch. As I said previously, why do the sharks in the vid have that hack right behind their heads -it wasn't to remove a dorsal, aren't carpet sharks pretty docile?
@photoglyph Yes Carpet Sharks are docile. The slash behind the head is to kill them before finning. Unfortunatly this does not always kill them as one of these sharks were still moving. Our law requires the shark to be killed before finning. Legally these fisherman are within the law however in Nov 2007 29 finned carpet sharks were found by a DOC ranger in the Able Tasman National Park, some were still alive.
I am trying to determine if these are 'carpet sharks'; why did they make that deep cut on top of its body? Dorsal fin is well back on the body of the shark.
I would like to catch the people who do this to these sharks
@photoglyph Yes they are Carpet Sharks in this case caught alive. Our law says they must kill the shark before finning. My point is that these sharks are by-catch and would be better returned to the water than killed and finned for such small fins. The bodies are wasted. We cannot afford this waste or loss of sharks.
I cant believe shark finning in NZ is legal. This is a absolute waste and imoral practice. Sharks are amazing creature and a vital part of the eco system.
At the moment legally you dont have to use the meat in NZ and can fin a shark just for its fins as long as its dead. This is done just to support the asain tradition of shark fin soup, which scientifically has no benifits!
Such a waste. Please do no eat in any resturants that sell this. We need to ban this in NZ to protect our environment.
Form a voice! Write to our NZ govt. re.Shark Finning. Most govts are so corrupt they are receiving handouts from everywhere. Our voice is the only way forward.Popular public opinion cannot be ignored. If I decided to treat any other animal like this I'd be locked up - who the hell decided this was o.k?. Bollocks to religion, culture and tradition, all of which have caused nothing but agro, humanity is a trait that has to be earned, and I don't see much of it here.
Sharks have inhabited the worlds oceans for over 400 million years but, within only a few decades, humanity has put many species at risk, and driven others to extinction. It is estimated that 73 million sharks are killed every year as a result of bycatch and the vast international demand for shark fins for soup. Thats three sharks every second!
As apex predators, sharks maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem and play a critical role in our oceans. Their disappearance could have devastating effects throughout the marine environment.
Shark fining is disgusting but you also have to remember that most of the fisherman that are catching these sharks are not specifically targeting them.
They are just by-catch and sadly the meat on carpet sharks and spiky dog sharks are of very low quality.
Any other sharks would be kept and the whole thing sold.
In my personal view i think it is fine to fin them and throw them back...
In this case these sharks are as you say by catch. My point is that they are landed in pots alive and instead of released killed for two tiny thin fins which are sliced off.
We are seeing less and less small sharks on reefs while diving and as you will be aware sharks play a very important part in the health of the ocean.
We should not sacrifice these sharks for such small gain when weighed with the good they can do in the marine environment. A chage in consciousness is vital.
@Subquatic U have been grossly misinformed. Fishermen do target sharks ONLY for fins, in the videos here i can understand where u can get that idea. My simple response is watch more videos.
shark finning is a bit like cutting down an orange tree for a few oranges. fishing vessels practicing shark finning should be sunk on the spot, no questions asked
It is irresponsible that we (NZ) allow this to continue in our waters. New Zealanders don't eat shark fin soup or any of the other ridiculous potions the Asian culture create for supposed cures. Ban Shark finning, save the sharks and in return they will save our oceans!
This is one of the saddest and most sobering videos I've seen. What right have we got to destroy these beautiful predators of our marine waters. Who eat's shark fin in NZ?
I am so disgusted! Why does our government continue to allow this barbaric practise? As the film Sharkwater is now doing the rounds in New Zealand, it's time we all stood up and said NO MORE FINNING!
what a waste! shark should be protected anyway in my opinon. always admired NZ for the way of taking care of it's great nature -didn't know shark finning is allowed down there. important vid!

AS LONG AS THEY HAVE BEEN KILLED BEFORE HAND.
A quick iki to the brain before they're finned.
