  • Hi sir - I really enjoyed this, could I ask at the very beginning, what are the chords to the into? Cheers

  • @Xanproduce Gmaj7/B, A13/Bb, Am7, D9

  • Thé best video to learn jazz with good methodology thanks

  • Tim:

Enjoying your lessons. Very helpful. I hope you keep them coming. Got a chuckle out of the facial expression at the end of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love." Eventually, I wonder if you would consider a lesson on how to move away from the arpeggio exercises, which I realize are crucial, to making music. Or maybe that just comes as a natrual extension of the practices. Thanks!

  • @ezelkins Thanks! Will bear it in mind for future lessons. Tim

  • @Tim - I love your arrangement of this classic! I never get tired of this song. I'm tempted to ask about the tomatoes and cucumbers but will keep on topic. :D

    1. What guitar are you using in this video?

  • Hi Tim , liking all you new stuff by the way , but back to this one.

The turn around you do at 1.40 is slightly different to the begining bit and I can't quite pick out the 2nd chord your playing. Is it Bm6 or E9 or something else?

    Cheers Dames :0)

  • @Dames12345 It's an E9 with a B in the bass :)

  • @thrip Thnx Tim :0)

  • Tim, what mic & interface are you using to record these videos? (for the gypsy guitar, and the Laney amp)

BTW, Great playing and lessons. I've personally benefited quite a bit from them. I've been playing your etudes, and that's how I finally started to sound somewhat like a GJ player...

  • @oylebiseyyok Thanks, I'm pleased the lessons are useful! I am using a Groove Tubes GT33 mic, into an Apogee Duet.

  • you sir are an absolute legend your videos are the most accessible and practical i've ever found, thank you very much

  • @gageiiiiitttt excellent to know, thanks!

  • @thrip Glad i found this. You're website is great. Do you use Djangobooks website. i think i recall your name. Anyway thanks for this vid

  • IS THIS GINGER JAZZ

  • Lol struggling with just the 1st chord , I take it you must be damping something as I'm sure I haven't got enough fingers lol.

    :0)

  • @Dames12345 have a look at my reply to @SamiKun

  • @thrip Ta Tim , so busy watching vid , didn't notice that down there.

    Dames :0)

  • wow cant believe ive found this lesson! about ten years ago i had a jazz guitar cd which had a version of this by george barnes and loved the song. it was a song i really would love to be able to play but never thought id do it until now.. thanks ever so much for tabbing out the chords and melody!

your website is full of great hints and tips.. have you everr heard the george barnes version.. its awesome!

  • @cromerpaul Thanks, glad you like my website and find it useful. I've not heard the George Barnes version, but I like his playing!

  • Hey Tim! i love your lessons and your other videos, you're a great player! I have a question though that has been bugging me. for the voicing you use for the Gmaj7/6(the first chord) how do you barre the 2nd finger with out muting the note that the 1st finger plays, while also barring with your 3rd finger, and playing the bass with your thumb. haha i hope that made sense! my main problem is with the barre of the 2nd finger.

    Thanks for your time

  • @SamiKun Thanks! The chord is quite tricky to play at first but it's just a matter of practice! Maybe start with just the 3rd and 1st finger, then add the second finger just on the D string being careful not to mute the G string. When you can do that place your 2nd finger between the 4th and 5th strings to play both of them. Finally add your thumb and voila! - permanent damage to your left hand! No, only joking but make sure you do it gradually if you're experiencing any pain.

  • @thrip hahaha alright, ill keep at it using the plan you advised. Thanks for the response, and the laugh.

  • merci

  • please show me how is the chord sequence 1:56 to 2:06

because in your page are not those chords ..

    thanks

  • @Riighhe yes they are on the chord sheet page. On the third line, second chord which starts with C69, C#o7 etc.

  • You're the best bro! Your chord diagrams helped me so much! Your pdfs are really helpful as well as your excercises. Thanks a lot!

  • @RichardthePage thank you, it pleases me to know it!

  • You need to make the chords clearer regardless of your pdf files?

  • @waveydee Do you mean that they're not clear on the video, or on the pdf?

  • Great stuff! Someday I may get ambitious and try that arpeggio thing.

  • I think this tune was written (by Jimmy Mc Hugh) in G, but because of the horn-based nature of most jazz, it's most often played in F or Ab. So good on you & Django for honouring the writer's key!

  • Question! I´m all new to gypsy jazz, at least I have very little experience to it. I´m wondering about the right hand technique. Should I use a pick, or just the index finger to pluck the notes, or what?

I´m looking through some of your exercises right now, and I´m having some trouble with the right hand. A great site by the way!

  • Hello and thanks! My answer would be, yes, you certainly should be using a pick. GJ guitar players are obsessed with right hand technique!

Try to play with as many downstrokes as possible, and when changing strings ALWAYS stat with a downstroke.

  • Thanks alot for your helpful advice! Finally got that questing mark out of the world!

  • Very good arpegios! See my version of I can't give you anything but love...

  • Tim,

I think it's really great that you always attempt to do a solo at thend using-just-the-arppegios. Your exercices are great ...

    THAAAAAAAAAAAANK YOOOOUUUU

  • @GLiZZiE Thanks, just trying to show the melodic possibilities of studying arpeggios.

  • i cant make the chords T_T

  • @StragonRage Gypsy Jazz chord voicings are quite strange to someone coming to them for the first time. Just persevere with them and it will get easier. It's worth it!

  • Ahhh You got me there Tim. I can't wrap my left thumb around the neck; not these days at least!

    Nice stuff..

    John

  • @Jazzwayze A conventional four note G6 chord is almost as good!

  • Hi Tim !

Very good guitar teacher in my opinion !

And your guitar sounds really great !

    Cheers,

    Thomas

  • @bunkomen thanks a lot Thomas!

  • bravo grazie !! coquette?

  • @MalAssortiti good idea, hint taken!

  • hey what kind of guitar is that you are holding? It looks like a steel string but it has the head of classical string guitar. Also what brand? It has a great sound.

  • @chickenmanstan It's a steel string guitar. Do a search for "Selmer Maccaferri", that will tell you about the type of guitar. Mine is made by Godefroy Maruejouls.

  • @thrip Sweet, thanks. Also I found it difficult to find a proper fingering for the first chord on the chord sheet for this song. I think you called it a G6.

  • @chickenmanstan play the bottom E with your thumb, and the A and D strings with your 2nd finger placed between them.

  • @thrip Ouch! But thanks!

  • I really enjoy learning this one. Thanks!

  • thanks for watching!

  • Excellent lesson. Thanks for the files, Tim.

  • Glad you like it Alex

  • Great lesson! I am a beginner to this style of playing and appreciate it very much.

  • Thanks, more to come soon hopefully

  • Thank you for sharing (for free!) ^-^ your great experience.

    5*

  • Thanks :)

  • First, thanks Tim for the lessons they are terrific. Second, to superchang847, go and buy one of Godefroy's guitars they are not that expensive compared to many others and they are without a doubt the best sounding guitars of their kind.Godefroy is a wonderful luthier to deal with. I regret not buying one of his instruments. As for cost. For what I paid for a handmade Dell Arte, sold at a loss and picked up a used Busato Luxe it would have been cheaper to buy Godefroy's, and I would be happier

  • sscrew the arpeggios tim, i want the martino licks!!!!!!

  • maybe I will, just to get you off my back! lol

  • awesome vid man. really helpful.

how much did you pay for that gorgeous guitar?

  • Well it was fairly expensive, but worth it!. Made by the excellent luthier Godefroy Maruejouls. Have a look at his website for current prices.

  • i could not find a good lesson for this song any where thanks for it

  • my pleasure
