Yay! no more outsourcing of call center agents to India or other 3rd world countries.... but still no work for you guys 'coz only one employee will be required - Watson.
@houstondodgeball Im from Finland. We do have call center jobs, because Indians don't speak Finnish much. And Finnish is a tough language to master because it's so flexible and different, on sentence can mean so many things. But still, Indians are trying, call center business must be very lucrative for them.
Watson, on the other hand, would have no difficulties to take over call center tasks from us. Oh well, it's a shitty job anyway, waste of our brains mostly.
@ozzytonygeezerbill linux applications just work on OS X with fink, and Linux isn't based on Unix.
from OS X to linux is a little harder but headless applications are quite easy to port to Linux, anything with GUI gets difficult but also isn't impossible (like going from Native-OS X to Windows)
and Linux isn't a unix or unix based, it's unix-like.
@carnin that's why Watson is also a reminder of how awesome the brain is. It takes several massive fridge-sized computers to compete with the top-level humans EVEN IN A VERY LIMITED DOMAIN. At the same time, Watson is an impressive demonstration of how far language processing has come, though it's nowhere close to what we would call "true machine intelligence".
@carnin There seem to be disparate challenges between the two.
The challenge for the human is the expansiveness of his knowledge and ability to recall. This is Watson's and computers in general strength.
On the flip side the challenge of Watson and computers is the ability to understand questions in natural language. This is a human strength over computers.
@foxsux6000 Linux and Mac OS X are both built atop UNIX, they are not even close to 100% compatible. But they are a hell of a lot closer than anything is to windows.
A version of that software will some day replace every helpdesk worker in the world. In the future, when you phone in to get help with your problem, a warm but robotic voice (and most likely womans voice) will give you a solution in 3-6 seconds, and she doesn't care how much you yell at her.
@gcamiloc092 IBM doesn't make laptops or regular pc's anymore, Apple is as much IBM as lenovo laptops (not at all) IBM internally promotes OS X use due to it's Unix like kernel (and allot of people at IBM hate Microsoft, OS/2 Warp guys are still there)
@foxsux6000 If anything, IBM supports Linux - You know, since they are one of the biggest contributers to the Linux kernel and stuff. There is no reason whatsoever they should support Apple, really. The software they make doesn't run on OS X.

Question: What is Watson?
JeweledBeast 1 year ago 39
@JeweledBeast Watson is not intellegent, it's just a supercomputer with complicated search algorithms that attempt to understand natural speech.

@outlaw686 Sure, you say that now, but if that answer comes up, and Watson gives that question, I won't be anywhere near.
