get some real battery power hooked up, that low voltage is gonna fry that starter trying to crank over an engine that's probably got a lot of sludge in it. Like the other comments, fresh gas in an anti-freeze jug is a great idea, and get that engine whirling over faster so it has a chance to produce some real spark.
This is bittersweet nostalgia for me: to be concise: relatives owned and worked their own farm in upstate NY. In the 1960s one of the trucks w as a 56 or 57 chevy stake truck with i bet the identical engine and manual trans. They fell on bad times they couldnt afford a battery for the truck, they towed it behind a building where it stayed it sank, one year it was gone they'd junked it for money. I was young n dumb!
@RATMAN775 Ah well...I can't say it was a high priority if that's what you mean. It's not like the truck is going back into service if I magically get it running. I don't agree with that, but that's the way it is.
I think if you put a brand new starter,it will turn your engine faster and maybe it will fire better,i say that because i think that the actual starter does not provides the 300 rpm an engine needs to start. Replace the oil and get the gas from an outside can are good ideas.
that oil is probably like tar by now. Ya need to flush it out and replace it with fresh. That'll get it spinning over fast enough to produce the spark it needs to fire right. The fuel line to an outside can is a great idea.
whatever gas was left in that truck's fuel tank has probably turned into jelly or something and is probably keeping fresh gasoline from bieng pumped into the engine. beautiful truck! hope she lives!
if you want that thing to turn over you got to get yourself some spark plugs, clean out all the crap and cow webs from your terminals, dump alot of lucas fuel line cleaner in there, and "dump" the clutch, you should be in business.
you should pull the gas line off that feeds to the fuel pump and run a hose into an old antifreeze jug or something, i don't think its getting gas from the gas tank. did you get it running yet? i have a '64 long box stepside gmc that sat for 25 years, fired right up last year and is finally on the road again
@mongrott It's never run in more than fits and spurts so far. I'm not sure how big of a priority it is, but I'll probably try to make it move sometime, just because there has been so much interest here.
Hope that this poor old but great truck is saved, my brother owns a 65 ford pick up that is much much worse condition but engine starts like a rocket it runs but body is falling appart, or if not interested put it for sale someone will salvage this truck or restore it let's keep America's history alive!!!
I love that rub rub rub sound these trucks make as they are cranking. These trucks are great, mechanical treasures. You should restore it, little by little, keeping it all original.
What's the cap and rotor look like? Friend of mine drove his van through a large puddle and couldn't get it started. I took the cap off and seen it was completely filthy. So, I put in a new C&R and it sounded just like your grain truck, a lot of almost firing. Come to find out, carbon build-up (from the cap button wearing down) got washed into the connector for the crank sensor and was shorting it!! I'd get to cleanin that cap.....
You need to McGyver a fuel tank, a funnel with about 2 feet of hose would work, and hook it to the S10 with jumper cables. Fresh gas will do wonders. Pull the choke, pump the gas pedal 3 or 4 times, hold the clutch to the floor THEN crank it. Keep goin you're doin great!
Congratulations for the 200th vid., it's always entertaining and interesting to see them, i wish for another 200 to come. I bet the truck only needs some fresh gas and a clean carburetor, you almost had it started.
Congrats on the 200th video milestone, Good job. Looks like you got a few suggestions for things to try. Hope to see more. Thank you for the entertaining vids.
Just an idea but for my field cars I just use a bucket the kind that gear oil comes in and then fill the air vent tube on the carb with gas cause it will fill the bowl and it actually should start, those straight engines are really hard to kill due to the simplicity. Goodluck with it, would love to see her fire up
we all hope to see a part 6 where it finaly gets started and drive it around. it will start eventualy, its a chevy. i hope you decide to spend some more time on it
The first video I saw of yours was of the "old cold forgotten" grain truck! I can't remember if it was the first or second, but it got me to subscribe! What is that, a 235?
Hey Bill, don't give up. I posted a video response of my efforts to get a long-dormant '66 Pontiac to run to give you guys some motivation. Probably all it will take now is supply the fuel pump with an external tank, like I did. The carb is probably dried out like mine was, so it might require the top to come off to get the crud blown out of it. You're almost there though, hang in there.
I'm thinking the carb needs cleaning and a redneck gastank. should be setup. I did that on a '66 C-10 with a 250ci inline 6 that sat 16 years. Worked well enough for me to drive it out of the driveway with 2 nearly flat tires.
I've taken an old Dodge my grandfather had and did all sorts of sprucing up on the thing after it sat for 4 years. New battery, battery cables and connections, carb rebuild, new fuel lines, wire, plugs, points, fresh fuel, rotor button, distributor cap, and a coil. Sad to say it would fire intermittently, and sputter and die, or not fire at all after all that work. The spark was sometimes there and sometimes not. At wits end I got a wild hair and replaced the distributor. Ran like it was new.
you can also pull the starter to make sure the brushes and bushings are good. Direct drive starters are very simple to work on. Last one i rebuilt was the 27MT for a 6.2 diesel and it cost me $25 in parts and about an hour's worth of my time.
Use the washer fluid bottle as a redneck gas tank? I think it just needs the plugs cleaned, points filed, and maybe some recycled plug wires. Maybe at most some carb cleaning.

You should put some oil and antifreze in it and put some new plugs and wires in it and I guarantee it will run.

I'd put fresh gas in there. If it has been sitting through 10+ years of illinois winters, that gas is better as a varnish and copper cleaner.

Prime the carb via the bowl vent if it has one. That'll get it to start like it was running yesterday as the engine will have a fresh supply of fuel.

file the points.
then run hose from washer tank to carb.
have gas is washer fluid jug.
might have to prime the carb
