Two-level utilitarianism is what I did my paper on in my utilitarianism class. I like that the best. Every ethical theory is going to a whole, that is why the debate goes on.
A quote from Mill to back this up: "Few human creatures would consent to be changed into any of the lower animals, for a promise of the fullest allowance of a beasts pleasures; no intelligent human being would consent to be a fool, no instructed person would be an ignoramus, no person of feeling and conscience would be selfish and base, even though they should be persuaded that the fool, the dunce, or the rascal is better satisfied with his lot than they are with theirs."
I have a question. Suppose that each person is capable of 20 units of happiness- that is, it a person has 20 units of happiness they are perfectly happy. Now consider two populations. One contains 4 people all with 20 units of happiness (4 perfectly happy people). Another population contains 100 people all with 1 unti of happiness (their lives are barely worth living). Accordin to the Utilitarian, which population is preferablt (better). and why?
If the point of this exercise is to say that the elimination of each group of people will yield the same result regarding happiness units, it's a tie and that's that. However, while I see your analogy as merely analogy, I feel compelled to pick away at the many possibilities inherent in the single difference (the number of people). I think most informed people agree that more people are larger resource consumers, for example (bad). My point is that in the real world there's rarely a tie.
Given that 20 is the greatest happiness, and 0 is the greatest pain: the equation implies that in the first case, there are not only 4 people who have 20 happiness units, but also 96 potential people who have 10 happiness units, because they feel neither pleasure nor pain. The first case is preferred, rather than the second case.
thats very tricky. i'd have to go for the 100 people each with 1 bcos mathematically you get more points out of that population and to a utilitarian it doesnt really matter about minorities they just care about the cumulative happiness as long as its the same population and u get the points
I always add a "s" onto Mill. Possibly due to the General Mills cereals or something. I'm watching these videos slightly out of the order that you posted them.
the one example i remember my prof giving was about stealing. if one of your parents or one of your children were dieing, and the sole person who had the drug that would cure your relative would not give it nor sell it to you. is it morally acceptable to steal the drug from the person to save the life?
thank you so much for these! you seriously helped me on my philosophy paper!

I totally did not click on the video because of the face on this thumbnail. It was done completely out of interest of the video's topic.

It jumps a lot, suggesting she just read and understood an aspect of Rule Utilitarianism and then spewed it out as fast as she could.
I was hoping she would strip at the end, therefore complying with the most fundamental rule of the greatest pleasure for the greatest number.
