The bass parts in this song are ridiculously hard. They might be easy to fret but you try playing them over and over, If you're not used to it your fretting hand will feel exhausted before the song is over.
I just finished listening to this song on a CD and the production is so rich, you couldn't imagine how a live version could compare. But guess what, they carry it so well you don't miss that aspect. They look shockingly young, don't they...
WOW can't believe they could do this live, and sound so CD-like. Andy Partridge's ability to sing while playing those guitar lines is a testament to his immense talent. Dave Gregory's 12 string Rick added so much to this album. Here's to you Andy. Thanks for not going 'pop' on us, and sticking to substance over style.
Indeed, I also noticed Colin throwing in a few bass licks here and there that aren't present in the studio version (and may have even been better if they were in it). Such a great, energetic performance. Shame about the recorded sound quality, but with XTC I guess we have to take what we can get.
Fabulous lyrics and great imagery in this song. "Seems the more I travel, from the foam to the gravel, as the nets unravel, all exotic fish I find..." So good to see this performed live.
now i understand that Andy decide touring no more. See that static and bored audience. European audiences sucks!!!!!!they can face a great show like this as if they were making a line in a bank
. E.I.: later Sting hired Hugh Padam to produce his "TEn's Summners Tale" which suspiciously was a medeival throwback like E.S. which Padam produced. Its the first CD where Sting looked like a troubador. Guess what .XTC had done it ten years earlier!
This is a terribly difficult song to pull off! And they nail it. Andy has too much respect for his masterpiece to goof it all up. It is in G Mixolydian for the musicians. Newbies should get ENGLISH SETLEMENT. An audio enginneerng proffessor at MTSU held it up, said "THIS is a great CD!" It was SO ahead of the times
Thanks for posting this! The group, as usual, is tight and thankfully Andy didn't mug and goof around with the lyrics too much in this performance. Super super super!
My idea of heaven to be at this show listening to this over and over...

@RamblerCrane Hate to be all hoity-toity, but it's, "tell you it all right from the start." LOVE this band, though.

We have to face facts, internetfolk... this album is where Spinal Tap's "Stonehenge" got its start.

I still prefer Skylarking. One of my top 5 of the 80s. The Apple Venus albums are quite nice too.

This is my favorite XTC album by far. The later stuff might be more polished but every song on this album was so strong.
