Woodface is a great album, one of those great early 90s 'polished hippy' albums (think Out of Time or Pocketful of Kryptonite too) that defined their band. There is a subtle mystery and honest poignancy to it where it never bluntly hits you over the head with it. It's has a relaxed, sophisticated, quirky beauty to it that maybe speaks of a New Zealand attitude. There goes god, with its interesting idea and that beautiful harmonica is a highlight.
This is one amazing song. It appeals to so many. It even sounds fantastic with my 1.21 jigowatt car stereo turned up as high as it will possibly go. Seriously!
@SelmanAndyyy175 maybe someone can explain it to you when you're 18! ;-) j/k nah, it's a song questioning the existence of God, like "if you know me, why don't you tell me what i'm thinking". i think Neil is making a joke of Beelzebub (Satan), who was the most beautiful of all God's angels so even now God is jealous since "he looks so good in black, in black, in black". i am a Christian, but i still question everything and therefore could be considered rebellious... so i totally get this song!
@SelmanAndyyy175 It's a metaphor, but it's also a parody of traditional biblical views of God, and the contradictions/conflicts found in any relationships - going to the extreme - kind-of like saying "Oh s*** I don't know! But there goes God..." In other words "I don't know, and the whole 'God' thing makes no sense either!'" And being a brilliant lyric, there will be more meanings and ways to interpret it than this - this is just one.
@teacherlady66 he is a poet and a great voice his lyrics have been there for me in happy and sad times and i am grateful for his talent and how they have played a part in my life x
@teacherlady66 That is exactly why I love him so much. Too many songs today have generic lyrics. Neil's lyrics force you to listen and to think. We need more artists like him.
Crowded house formed in N.Z and wrote there first album in N.Z. Niel Finn and Paul Hester both x split enz are Kiwis.Listen to all the lyrics. Most songs are tied to N.Z.Crowded house based them selfs in melborn to reach the rest of the world. N.Z kiwis true and through.
your right but Paul Hester was from Melbourne-Unless he came here when he was very young. His parents are jazz muso's from there also.Nick is from oz and his brother plays with hunters & collectors. You should be proud of the Finn bros-They are as pure as the 'all blacks'...Dragon were another N.Z band that were awesome.Your right N.Z music deserves the credit for giving the world some brilliant music..PS carn the wallaby's.
Neil is one of the best lyricists ever. Witty song, lovely melody. A true songsmith. Bravo Mr. Finn!

God can't stand Satan because of how good he looks. I love this song, there is so much truth in it.

I know, you have to love those Finn boys.

This song was written by Tim Finn and Neil FInn together. I believe it's Tim's chorus. Where's the picture of Tim?

Neil Finn is an amazing poet. His lyrics are incredible linguistic marvels that others just stumble around over.

@teacherlady66 I agree but this song was co-written with his brother Tim.

The instruments sound like the studio tracks but the vocal sounds overly loud and dry... is this is master track or something?
