  • Linux has a lot of great things about it, and so does Windows; I use both of them as I need too. However, as stated earlier, Linux does have some advantages that I rather like, such as, the source code of almost all programs can be retrieved and changed according to your need or wish. I like Linux more than Windows because it's open source, unlike in Windows. Windows has more programs too. If you want to bash someone, bash Apple, they're more restrictive than even Microsoft is!

  • I have to agree with Atkins. They are both tools. One's a screw driver, and one's a wrench. They both have their time and place to be used. Unfortunately most MS software is total shovelware. Shovel it out as fast as they can, who cares if it really works right. When you have people pay top dollar, I think you shouldn't put out shovelware. Linux and it's opensourcedness has a large community that can fix problems as they see fit and don't have to wait for one specific company to do it.

  • how did you install compiz on kde ? could you please explain as i am a linux newbie and have downloaded fedora 10 with kde 4.1

  • -------------------

and their too many options like (safe device remove) etc that Ubuntu-8.04 NOT have

@@if U wna try Linux Mandriva-one Is what u looking for (easy too install and all ur hardware work fine)

    surely that Ubuntu-8.04 r unstable

(not try Kubuntu yet but i think its not deferent on Ubuntu )

  • i have try install Ubuntu-8.04 but it not see my SAT 160GB Samsun H.D.D like i don't any H.D.D

But ehen i try mandriva-one-2008 KDE Every thing work fine and automaticly install my nVIDIA geforce 7600GS full driver

and My SKyStar DVB Work too^^

so i enable 3d desktop effect

(just on LIVE CD)and it was amazing

  • Only on youtube could a thread about a compiz demonstration devolve into an asinine windows vs linux argument.

  • Heck yeah I'm posting this from Kubuntu 8.04 with ...

I'm not sure what, I'm not experienced with Linux, but I think it's just KWM, but still, I HAVE MORE DESKTOPS THAN YOU VISTA!!!

  • Well guys I wanna say that compiz is cool but I don't wanna waste 30% CPU for it

  • compiz uses less CPU than without, if you turn off the stupid effects and just use it for compositing.

  • they may be proud of what there desktop looks like, but besides the looks how about the fact that your pretty much immune to virus's

the only thing windows is "better" at is crashing, and video games, and even Linux has wine to play those games.

and dont disregard the fact that Linux is 100% free 100% of the time. LEGALLY!

oh, and learn English you retard.

  • I cant believe I'm finally doing it. i got parts coming and decided to save the 100 bucks by not opting for windows this time. So here i go , diving into Linux full time now. wish me luck.

  • good luck, but u wont need it!

  • You're not immune to viruses, nor does windows crash like it used to. Obviously, you know fuck all about windows, you just parrot what all the Lintards FUD out.

  • This is a little stereotypical. You can't say that all people who use Linux "can't take the truth" when in fact many actually still use Windows because of it's advantages. Such as gaming and the fact that there are more developers for Windows because it is more popular. This however, is at no fault of Linux. When you find me 5 points that make Linux worse than Windows (other than the fact that there are a wider variety etc. as that does not make the OS "worse"), then I will listen to you.

  • Windows does not use assy Xorg. We all know Xorg is shit. It can't even send transparency over a network.

ALSA has many layers and non of them work correctly. Pulseaudio is trying but still not good enough

Support? Linux only has forums, and only a few distros have commercial support. The commercial support those distros have are piss poor.

Windows can run apps that don't suck natively, like photoshop and ms office. Can Linux do that? Nope, and the alternatives suck.

    Linux lacks direction.

  • Yeah, none of the points you fault windows for are applicable to linux. It's not linux's fault, it's the third parties fault. Well, I can say the same thing for Windows. By the way, I use both. I'm posting from Mint right now. FUD is FUD, and should be done away with. Linux has good points and bad points, and so does Windows. It's not a black and white world.

  • No, but there are such less that the chances of getting one in at least 4 years is extremely slim. Windows does crash, as does Linux, but Linux distributions tend to have a better way of handling crashes than windows does. Although I have never actually seen a Linux distribution itself crash, as in the window manager and everything, only one program. Which is more the programs fault that Linux's. At least try using Linux for a while before bashing it.

  • If you say that linux is stupid then you know shit about operating systems. You are the noob asshole.Windows are made for the noobs so don't fuck up with linux.

  • Linux is made for people who like doing things the hard way, asshole.

  • Linux is so easy. What the fuck you talking about little boy. Simply if you need to do anything you must first recompile the kernel. Why? Just for the fun. Recompiling is to Linux has milk is to cereal. Next you must type in a long string of text resembling:

    fing -prtint0 *[02342a][234982]??_.?* | xargs -oi -print0 -J % rm %

    so fucking simple.

  • hahahahahahahahahaha

  • Exactly :D

  • alas no longer it's now just compiz, Beryl merged with it, I think.

  • they still naming

  • can u play need for speed on it?

  • most likely. appdb dot winehq dot org is where you can find compatibility lists.

  • thanks

  • no prob, good luck in your ventures

  • i dotn really used wine ...im getting ubuntu 7.10.

  • just fyi, if you want to play some of the games you adore on windows, you will have to use wine. its super easy. and almost acts exactly like windows.

  • the only game i play is xbox 360,ps3// and for pc warrock but i got bored of it...

i ask that for a friend that does play games on windows.

  • Eyecandy is a must for technology is for humans not the other way around.

    THE FUTURE IS OPEN.

  • nice eyecandy ;)

  • Compiz will work on a GForce 2 MX.

  • I'm looking for a good howto for XGL for Kubuntu as well. Any suggestions? yours looks great!

  • hey,

i'm trying to get on work the kubuntu with the xgl/compiz stuff, but it doesn't work for me yet...can you suggest me a good how-to? as there are too much in the ubuntuforums.org and in the wiki, that's expect to have gdm but i have kdm...

anyway, great video...short and it shows most of the stuff about it...

    cheers!

  • you need beryl, not compiz.

  • Wow :|

  • Whats the spec of your computer? To be able to do stuff like that.

I have 256mb of RAM, and a weird Intel graphics card (dont even know whats it called, or if I have 3d enabled :S)

Would I be able to do that?

  • My computer's an Athlon XP 2200+ (1.8Ghz), with 1GB of DDR333 RAM, and a NVidia Geforce FX 5200 video card with 256MB of RAM. To run XGL/Compiz stuff you need an NVidia GForce 4 card or better, or a newer Radeon card. I've heard that you can get it working with Intel video chipsets by using the aiXGL server instead of regular XGL, but I don't have any experience with that one, though.

  • Cool. Thanks for that info.

Looks like its unlikely for me to be doing much XGL/Compizing then :p

  • oh shit my old PC was P4 2.4GHz and 512mb DDR

and yeh Geforce FX5200 (Sold it from a year)

surely vista will not run on it

because it run slowly on my P4(again)3.4HT an 1GB DDR2 an Geforce 7600G 512MB.?

  • at least 1GB of RAM is reccomended for vista.

    I have P4 3.0 HT +2GB DDR2 +x1950xt, and it runs as fast as xp\7.
