The problem with SOPA is that it isn't really designed to combat piracy, it's more designed to tilt the control of the Internets' content, in the US especially, into the hands of larger media corporations. They assumed the Net was a fad, ignored it until too late and now have realized it's running away faster than they can keep up.
What is needed is a law that tries to combat piracy whilst still respecting the neutrality of the Net, not an easy or fast job, and stuff like SOPA isn't the answer.
Where in the constitution does it say the federal government has juristicion over personal property? That is state juristicion. Not only would the federal government overstepping its bounds on the states but what about other countries?!?!? Why should the US be able to take down a site from germany just because it hosts pirated material made by americans? Why would piracy be a federal crime while shoplifting isnt? Seems like the government is looking out for corporate interests yet again.. smmfh.
Dreadman ima put it to you like this if this passes MORE CRIMES and i think they dont wanna take that chance thats why President Obama said no to SOPA/PIPA
There are other websites that hold the information but you can't flat out say "go to the library" because they don't always hold certain information. Especially if it's something fresh out the box.
However, if the internet is down because of this garbage bill, then every researcher is fucked.
I never really cared for Wikipedia like that because some of the information they have on there is vague. You can also find information on other websites too
The bad part of the bill is if a site links to a place that links to pirated material, they can get shut down.
Example: someone post a clip from a TV show on YouTube. YouTube could get shut down for that. And if anyone tweets or shares it on Facebook, Twitter and Facebook can get shut down too!!
This legislation could destroy the internet as we know it if it passed. These bills aren't simply unconstitutional, they are anticonstitutional! We would get slapped back to the 80's again. And be honest, we need the internet more than we need water+food ;)
