I love this rendition! I found the musical version to be a bit boring but she made it awesome and jazzy and I prefer her voice to some high pitched wailing anyday
I absolutely LOVE Annie Lennox. I have a collection of B-Sides, rarities, and bootleg stuff that any Lennox fan would die for. BUT, when she can't sing it, she can't sing it. This doesn't even HAVE to be compared to any other version; she just did not have the high regsiter for this tune. Her baritone is splendid, her enthusiasm admirable, even her adopted folksy-Southern enunciation is cute - BUT - I'm sure I'm not the only one who cringed when she went flat on the high notes. Bummer.
It wasn't bad. She sang it as a jazz song. There was no intention to do it a la Showboat. The best version is Helen Morgan. She did the original Julie on Broadway and the 1936 film version but Annie can still take a bow for this performance.
That's what decades of Rock'N'Roll singing does to one's voice. She has totally lost her highs, it sounds like. She's way too young to have lost her voice. not to mention 'plan' was so terribly out of tune.
Without the voice, she needs the right technique. Rock and Blues are related, but not close enough for her to pass.
I love Annie, but didn't like this at all!!! She sounds like she's forcing her voice too much to sound like black-jazzy amazing singers...TERRIBLE! I love Björk's version 10,000 times more.
Wow, this is truly awful! -- She's crammed up against the top of her vocal range from the start, and the leaden, cornball arrangement!! --- egad, what a MESS!!
I actually thought she was mentally retarded at the beginning of this song. I mean no insult, she jsut sounds awful in this song, like something is wrong with her.
@LindsayOfSaturn That's a rude thing to say. Everyone has a different voice and style, if we all sounded the same the world would be boring. Lets see you sing it sister.
i think inuysha2sasuke meant that in a tranny type of way like WORK you know? maybe? kinda? i think he/she meant it in a good way because there is two E's on "somee" showing exaggeration so i think like we just all need to peace and love in this world, be understanding....HAHAHAHA okay im done
WOW!!! I had no idea this even existed, I'm so surprised she didn't post this on her blog! everything else is onthere, lol....I wish she did another covers album of old jazzy standards, like Queen Latifah and Deborah Cox did...she looks and sounds great here!!
I love Annie - she is the best - but she never sings as well when she is wearing that earpiece. When she sings without it she is fantastic. When she uses it she misses notes.
I think she sung very well here. Those Earpiece things are needed for loud Rock shows. I don't know why she needed that type of feedback/earpiece for this type of song and band?? Almost too much sound tech these days. I guess Ms Lennox had her reasons for useing it. She is so good!
awwe--great annie--makes me smile:)--she shoudl explore more of this music-would love to hear cd of these standards from her.-her voice is getting such rich tones in it as she matures:)
Even Annie Lennox can have a bad day...she´s singing as though she has stomach cramps....

Gente, que terrível! Ninguém realmente percebeu que estava agudo demais para ela?
É uma grande cantora, mas me pareceu um equivoco.
Folks, that's terrible! No one really knew he was too acute for her?
It's a great singer, but it seemed a mistake.
