This song always reminded me of "Happy Trails" by Roy Rogers. It has that lazy Western swing feel and I can almost feel the bouncing of the saddle on a horse. Weird how different people feel about songs. One thing for sure, it's one of their best by the best lineup FM ever put on stage.
Man, you just can't help but melt into this song. Guaranteed play this in a shopping centre at 12 o clock on a Saturday and just watch the busy people stop rushing, put down their shopping and just drift....for a few moments. SUBLIME. This song always makes me think of driving along in the dead of night, surrounded by empty paastures and woods along the sides of the roads.....
McVie is right on Micks' shoulder. Makes sense when you listen to pretty much anything they ever did since. A really solid rhythm section. Faultless in the genre. Plodding and boring in others. Hey ho.....
@mingmongmang No doubt in my mind this was live. After reading your response (never read the post you are replying to I must confess) I watched for a 3rd straight time (I never get tired of it & my wife commented "I could listen to this all day"). Looking for subtle differences in the sound of the leads (especially at the start of Danny & Jeremy's solos)...and there are none. If you listen to it back to back with the single version, this is clearly different. I like this performance best of all.
@HeartoftheDragonColo I'm affraid to say it was mimed, just watch mick fleetwood... where do the cymbals come from while he's on the toms ? they we're obviously told to mime because they definitely don't need to !! peace
I like this tune, though I don't know how you lip synch to an instrumental, Tony Blackburn said he didn't like this one around the time he said people take music too serously, this was back in 1978, Birmingham ice rink has reopened now I believe, it's now planet ice haven't been there for years though
I am also quite sure it's 'mimed', because it's identical to the studio recording. The live recordings have a slightly different arrangement with Jeremy Spencer on slide instead of the quieter, less penetrant slide of Peter Green (on the single version).
@legbider - it's not the first time, but they should have had some fun with it, like Buffalo Springfield when they performed For What It's Worth on TV back in the day.
HeseQ., They where, could you get this sound on a bottle of Evian Water and a veggie snack...Er...noooooo. Jaysus, we are becoming so masticated by the jaws of the people that rule us that we have no will to be individuals anymore. I am sick of it now.
I hate to say this, but this is Miming, as carried out on so many Broadcast events, with dubbed-on audience clapping (possibly). That's why they look so passive. BBC also has live versions from TOTP and I remeber seeing it live there. Rod Stewart and the Faeces blew miming away after they started playing football in the middle of a song, on TOTP. Whilst the song continued!.
One of the loveliest guitar instrumentals ever, composed by Peter Green. But don't forget Danny Kirwan's input in this. He doesn't have a song credit for this, but he worked out a lot of the very important harmonies which make this song. Peter Green always said that he coudn't have finished Albatross without Danny's contributions. Also it's Kirwan's vibrato in the shared lead parts with Peter Green that gives this (and other performances) such an emotional, special touch to it.
This was some of the pure brilliance from the 60's, and it catches the feeling of the entire embodiment of some of the coolest music ever made. Good music for the young 'uns to listen up on.
there's something primal about this song-its very simple, but incredibly soothing. i hope being analytical doesnt damper its effect on anyone, but im a scientist-sorry. it must have something to do with the drum line that sounds like a mom's heartbeat to a baby and the cymbals that sound like gentle waves. the guitar chord changes slide instead of being abrupt, and the bottle neck sounds like a sea bird floating on the air. this song never ceases to make me take a deep breath and relax.
I probably should hate this, as this was the song I went down on, on my first appearance on a national radio pop quiz. Well, that was then, and I was too "young" to know it. Luckily, as you grow older you are able to look back in time and get to know what you have missed out on. A brilliant little piece of music.
@lala5732 He's Danny Kirwan, joined the band after their 2nd Album, and I think he was a Roadie before that, although he had had his own band. He made a brilliant foil for PG's guitar and Albatross wouldn't have been possible without him, although I have seen PG and the Splinter Group play it, without Danny. He's had a very hard time since leaving the Mac.
I am not sure Danny Kirwan ever was a roady. But he indeed had a band of his own, called Boilerhouse. After he joined FM, he became far more than Peter's foil. He was very much needed, because apart from Peter G, FM was a rather uncreative band, with only one other composer, namely J. Spencer, who only penned Elmore James clones. Kirwan composed about half of the songs - until he got sacked 4 years later - and introduced other styles in the band like pop and ragtime.
I bought this record for a friend I was in love with when I was 15. He didnot like it and my love for him ended abruptly that day. Someone that didnot love this music wasnot going to be my boyfriend ;-) After all these years, I am glad I escaped......lol. THis is still one of the best songs I have ever heard...
@DirkjeA - well done !!! Someone who is not able to lay back and dream with this nice tune, is not worth being considered to fly with you for a life time. You must know, albatross couples are monogamists and they only meet once every two years (which is not normal in human thinking) to give birth to a new Albeechick life. Peter Green is telling this guitary story with his own laid back keys. You seem to have the right attitude to lay back when the right one will come one day. Best of luck 2 U!
Bruno Mars can only dream of creating something like this... an electric guitar is probably too heavy for his spaghetti strand "arms".. thank god there are classics like this to remind us of what is talent and the opposite of what is in the charts now
one song, five paths.fleetwood keeping the waves high, mac being the heart beat, spencer the tears, danny the desire and peter the brain,in other words he's everything...
Without doubt this is the finest piece of instrumental pop music ever. I have asked my eldest daughter to ensure that this is one of the pieces of music that i would like played at my funeral, whenever that day comes.
@eurocharter I did take Peter quite some time to compose this though. He was very careful with its arrangement. He also said he got the idea from a lick he heard Eric Clapton play live. He is my favourite blues guitarist - and there are plenty of good ones!
@clikityclak No, it's because people like you don't look hard enough. There is great music out there. It just flies below the radar. You have to dig a little to find it.
One of the most evocative tunes of all time! One can almost see the albatross hanging in the sea breeze, wingtips fluttering, above the white misty spray from the breakers as they crash onto the rocks...looking looking looking down...
Strangely enough, this was recorded at the time Peter Green was effectively working his notice. Mimed or not, it is good to have quality colour footage of this legendary line-up.
Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green, and Danny Kirwan would've been the next Who, Rolling Stones huge British rock band, along with Led Zeppelin. Unforunately, Peter Green left 5/1970, which put the FM's Boston Tea Party live album on permanent hold until Lindsey Buckingham left FM the first time in 1985. If that live album was ever released to the public prior to '85, the "mirage" of pop FM would've been destroyed. If Peter Green lasted another six months, FM's history would've been changed.
Although Peter Green composed Albatross, he said that he would never have been able to achieve the number 1 hit record without the help of Danny Kirwan.

Amazing quality. Other than the clothes and the fact that the music is good, this could've been filmed yesterday.
