@strange6 They generally only have one engine working when they are idling or have no need for them to be running. The unit automatically switches them off in order to preserve fuel. Its not uncommon to see a unit standing at a station with only one engine active till it departs.
If they often have only one engine running then that does not make them overpowered. If all three engines were working then yes! I can think of a lot more trains that are ridiculously overpowered, 180s, 222s etc. That's mainly due to the amount of engines
@strange6 In my book, having a 720bhp engine per car is overpowered, no matter if 1,2 or all three engines are working. The train is overpowered, full stop.
Very comfortable train (and fast), I use them to get to Manchester Piccadilly most weekends, the seating is very comfortable, and the train doesn't rattle and nearly as much as most that I've journeyed on
@Woolybak8 As well as all TransPennine routes, including Newcastle, Scarborough, Middlesbrough, Cleethorpes, Blackpool, Windermere and Barrow-in-Furness :) only 7 or 8 Edinburgh/Glasgow diagrams a day. The 185's aren't used on Hull services due to weight restrictions between Selby and Hull.
@Woolybak8 The weight restrictions between Selby and Hull must have been sorted now. And I'm not sure why 170's are on Cleethorpes services now, on late-night Sundays they're even used on York services?
The weight restrictions were sorted a while ago. 170s are used on Cleethorpes services as passenger numbers between Manchester and Leeds seem to have skyrocketed. 170s are ideal for the route to Cleethorpes. On Sundays I don't think Transpennine run any services to Hull, so 170s instead run to York with 185s working to Cleethorpes
For a unit, I think theyre very good. Brutal things, with far too much power to shift their lardy weight. But they don't half bellow. And I get to drive them for a living too !!
I would love the class 142/143/144 pacers to be removed from the sheffield area and replace them with class 158 trains, ontopic yeah these are a beast im currently building one for bve that will be released at christmas time.
So what you are saying is we may aswell not film the trains that are currently dominating our lines? Wouldnt that put rail enthusiasm into extinction? Is that what you want?
I don't think you'd find a bus with a 19 litre engine, or sounding as good as this. But, yes, I'd also prefer a peak but railtours are that's left for real trains
Ok then John37242, ill accept that comment when you get some videos yourself that combat this, the only thing beastly so far about you is your Youtube name. So wanktard, want to make another wise comment?
The best place to get one is Manchester Picadilly, as every Transpennine service stops there, as all services either terminate at Manchester Airport or Lime Street from other destinations. If you are interested, the Class 170 Transpennine is usually in Picadilly as it runs the Pic-Hull services.

They are ridiculously overpowered trains at 2200hp for a three car set. They often have only one engine running out of the three available.

Aye, but as Sam says he sees them on his travels in 'Scotland'. 185s are now used on Hull diagrams aswell, as some Cleethorpes diagrams are now 170s

how childish

Its not childish. Someone who says someone else can go to hell is just a waste of space, take no notice mate.
Woolybak8 2 years ago
I am not a big fan of buses which is why I have no interest in these buses, I prefer real trains, ie locomotives and stock not this crap
john37242 2 years ago
Maybe, but since theres not many Class 37s and 56s around for me, I stick to what is left, maybe this would keep trainspotting going?!
Woolybak8 2 years ago
the only train left in the uk worth keeping are
desiro's
coradia's
pendilino's
voyagers
and maybe a few class 156 / 158 sprinters only for local journeys
all tha rest can go to tha scrap heap
and tha designers can go to hell along with
john37242
who encourages these poxy peices of junk to remain active
b191191 2 years ago
There was no point putting this comment was there? I know John made a pointless comment but theres no need to say he can go to hell is there?
Woolybak8 2 years ago
all the ones you just said b191191 are all shite, so your saying 20`s 37`s 47`s 57`s 60`s can go to scrap? mega oh dear!
Victorialine67 2 years ago
No its not that Ian. Your right, but its one old stoat who says "Ooh this isnt a real train" and some young guy who says "Ooh units yay".
Woolybak8 2 years ago
Nothing but bus engines on metal wheels, its all well and good having an interest in railways but these are not real trains !
john37242 2 years ago
So what you are saying is we may aswell not film the trains that are currently dominating our lines? Wouldnt that put rail enthusiasm into extinction? Is that what you want?
Woolybak8 2 years ago
john37242 ;
you cant even compare a class 185 as a bus engine on metal wheels
when the peice of poxy junk class 142 that came from england 20 years ago
which was a bus on train wheels
also you probly wank over bus's and are affraid to admit trains are superior
b191191 2 years ago
Come on guys, language

Woolybak8 2 years ago
Comparing one of these with a Class 20/37/40/45/50/56/58/60 on full tap would be an absolute crime itself.
grannyjone 2 years ago
Says you
Woolybak8 2 years ago
Yes, they sound a lot better than all the 2nd & 3rd generation Units -and 66s/59s - but the positive points end there.
grannyjone 2 years ago
they certainly sound better than 142's- shame about the livery = pink doors?
grannyjone 3 years ago
I like the livery, but they get too much when you see them all day like I do :(
Woolybak8 3 years ago
LOL Great vid. and brilliant acceleration; also they just sound immense!
89001avocet 3 years ago
Yep. I know its a bit of a crime to say this but with acelleration they remind you of the Deltic!
Woolybak8 3 years ago
the only crime there is in associating lovely 185s with the overrated nastienss that is 55022!! :(
89001avocet 3 years ago
D9016 is better, thats why she will be sold out within days on her first tour.
Woolybak8 3 years ago
Better, or just less-bad?
89001avocet 3 years ago
Better, thats what I said
Woolybak8 2 years ago
yerhh well im entitled to my opinion
and thats what i think
every time i have to spend an hour on a class 142 pacer
i think to myself i wish the designer of this peice of shit wud go to hell
along with this poxy shit hole train

AllianceB95 3 years ago
Yeah, I think they have the best acceleration out of all DMU and I also think they are better than the 220/221/222 units with accelerating too.
Woolybak8 3 years ago
These unit's are really nice, I was going from Manchester to Durham not too long back on one of these and they accelerate like sh*t off a shovel
mothity 3 years ago
They do accelerate amazingly, but there not English, what do you expect? lol
Woolybak8 3 years ago
Wow, if i wasnt watching the vid i would have thought that was an HST
