@eruptionista Jelly Roll Morton was on the writing staff of Melrose Brothers Music Company. It seemed to be common in the 1920s-30s for persons who made a different arrangement of a song to also take "a little credit" for the work. Several of my record labels show Morton as the composer of a piece that he merely arranged with the true composer 's name left completely off. Thanks for you comment!
this morton piece is one of my favorite of all time...just love the rowdy vocal delivery as well....some clarinet mr. simeon lawd! "he's got what i need, i say he has"....absolutely. another favorite is the "jungle blues"....jelly roll and the hot peppers are sensational. thanks for sharing.
Hello Central, give me Doctor Jazz He's got what I need I say he has When the world goes round and got those blues He's the man that makes me get out both my dancin' shoes The more I get the more I want it seems I'll page old Doctor Jazz in my dreams When my troubles pound (?) and mix He's the one who gets me fixed Hello Central give me Doctor Jazz. In the old days, before telephones had dials, you called the Central office and asked for your party by name.
No, vi dico.Comunque per questo il pianista tra i più brillanti del suo secolo e per questo va onorato e rispettato. date a Cesare quel ce è di Cesare. è stato un piacere.
and then you see those metal heads and they think metal is the hardest and most complicated music. pff... jazz is very beaudiful music with hight musical value. this is music then
Encouraging to see HepCat's remarks. I am now 65 and have spent all my adult life a fan of classic jazz. Sometimes I think theat it will die out, but not while there are people like HepCat.
comments from people like hepcat215 and idontneedanipod who see the quality in this music at the age of 14 give me hope for the future. keep looking guys - there is a ton of this stuff out there waiting to be enjoyed.
Not only the greatest traditional jazz pianist EVER but also a hell of a jazz vocalist. I've been listening to him since I was 11 years old. This a great old recording - I've loved it for 50 years!
I'm 20 and my girlfriend and i both love this music, i have a 20s columbia gramophone and a load of 78s, this being one of them, just sounds so good on a gramophone, anyone who's heard it on one will probbably aggree. I love playing this stuff loud at my university, seems to scare the students though lol
Hepcat, keep the faith bro--thirty six years ago i was a 14 year old listening and loving this great music, and refusing to listen to pop on the radio. Good for you, keep your ears open and keep on supporting this music. I have been a professional blues and jazz musician for some years now, and also play banjo in a trad jazz band. Ramble on, gate!!
@toastedbread0 - it is because those people are idiots! Forget about them ! ! People who have no respect for your tastes & opinions are not your friends! I'm building an ever-expanding music history channel with over 500 playlists so far. My lists feature most genres & cover the globe. 111 lists let you hear the music of any year since 1900 like you've stepped back in time.
This came out the year my mom was BORN! Her parents, age 37 & 42 must have been HORRIFIED at the sound of this! hehehe
@toastedbread0 I've had that problem ever since I was about 12 yrs old. LMAO! you're not weird you're special....music is the cosmic dance :D ! Enjoy it and revel in your special-ness;D
I used to own a 78 of this recording of when I was a kid .Rock and Roll was on the ascendancy and there was nothing ,nothing ,in those days, that came up to the quality of what this recording represents .This is the best Jazz record ever made.We are not living in a Golden Age.Not.Let us stop fooling our selves.
Johnny St Cyr played both banjo and guitar. The movie text says 'Johnny St Cyr banjo' and also the group photo shows him playing banjo, but when you listen to the music you'll hear that he is playing guitar on this recording.
I'm 14, and my whole account is dedicated to ragtime, early jazz and similar styles of music form the 20's and 30's. It's nice to know there are others like me, teenagers who don't spend all day listening to Soujla Boy and Miley Cirus through their earbuds. I'd much rather hear a good 78 Jelly Roll record then any of the pop-crap today.
@HepCat215 same here, though I'm open to anything except rap and country, I love all the oldies, jazz, rock, classical, opera, blues. I'm glad you love them at 14, im 16.
Sorry, I made a "lapsus calami", as I wrote "Europe" for "Italy". Being born in Tessin, I know very well the geographical collocation of your Country. ;o))
Have a listen to a current exponent on the piano - Wobbly Bob Brace. A very good mate. I just uploaded part of a session in a pub on the Isle of Wight
Nice little piece. Love this song -I used it as a theme song for a radio show I hosted back in the early 60's... so happy people are still diggin' it.
I love the video and photo of the boys in the band some I haven't seen before. The fades in and out the record labels nice change from the static photos that we see. Many thanks for posting.
My point exactly! This is surely the place to put things right and Dr Jazz was not composed or even partly composed by Walter Melrose.
eruptionista 3 days ago
@eruptionista Well we cleared that up for everyone (Ihope) lol. Thanks again for commenting!
preservationhall01 2 days ago
Dr Jazz was composed by King Oliver alone - Melrose was a publisher who put his own name on compositions
