  • I love The Nationals, but their sad songs don't help me to smile and fight for the new brand day

  • Totally Richard Reed Parry in the background. Hangin' out with The National. Like a boss.

  • It's like Vincent Van Gogh headlining a band.

  • Sorrow is seeing someone center stage with many people paying to support and love his artistry in music but then having to watch the painfully disappointing effect of that artist being super strung out/wasted/trashed during such a potentially( even more) beautiful song. My goodness...every video from this show, he is royally fu **ed up and dangerously close to falling off the stage. That's too bad. I just hope this isn't the norm for the lead singer. I sympathize with the rest of the band.

  • @islandsq I disagree....he/they are fantastic live.

  • @airick18 I think you misunderstood my statement above. I've never seen them live but was hoping to someday. Until then, all I have is you tube, and the first five videos I viewed of their live performances were less than spectacular because it seemed their lead singer was on his last bit of fuel or too trashed to put the art first. I have seen hundreds of live shows in my life and have only been disappointed by the few "artists" who drug themselves into their music. I hope that isn't National.

  • @islandsq I'm pretty sure that he is so moved by his music that he loses himself in it. These songs are pretty important to him, obviously, and I think that the power of performing them on stage really moves him. I don't really think he's royally Fu**ed up, he's just being an artist. By your definition.

  • @jontenz Thank you for sharing your opinion, jontenz. I was wondering if you've ever seen this band live? I was also like you to clarify for me what you meant by saying "By your definition." Where did you find me defining artist in either of my two comments on this video? Or maybe it's just how your thoughts came together semantically that is unclear to what you're are assuming about what my idea of a true artist is or isn't..? To be clear, I believe art is very subjective, yet drunk is drunk.

  • @islandsq I'm replying to myself to correct my own (semantics) typo with my third sentence! :) "I was also like..." should have been (!)..." I would also like you to clarify for me.." So, sorry to make this any more confusing for either one of us or anyone who takes the time to read these! Ha!-ha

  • @islandsq And I mean, I agree with you that it's terrible when guys come on stage and lose their artistry by being trashed. And drugs/alcohol shouldn't really be used to "drug" themselves into their music. But I really do think that this is the way Matt performs, very intense, and it does not detract in anyway from his music. Even though he's obviously had a drink, he isn't rolling around the stage. He can still give a moving performance lol which I don't think can be defined as drugged into.

  • @jontenz Yes, you're correct to say he isn't rolling around in THIS video per say, but i had just watched two or three before this one, where he was stumbling, bumping into things and kind of haphazardly shuffling off the stage with his band members looking at him like..."Damn...not again....and this one is pretty bad". Then I got to this video, and it started to look like a pattern for the lead singer. I also noticed his vocals were less impressive in these performances than the studio album.

  • @islandsq Yeah shows the quality of the people who listen to this music aye :) fair enough, I guess it's just the limits you define for like 'to what point does intoxication affect performance'. I don't really know. Still, an awesome freakin band! And I can really feel Matt's emotion in these videos, even if he is a bit drunk.

  • @islandsq Na I haven't seen them live (unfortunately). Yeah sorry, when I said "your definition" I was meaning someone who really appreciates their own music... as an artist. I think that's kind of the person you were hinting at who the crowd would like to come and see. If they wanted to come and see an artist like that, then I think they got their moneys worth. I agree, he obviously has had a drink lol but I think he still does not lose his connection to his music if anything it intensifies it.

  • @jontenz Thank you again, jontenz, for both of your above paragraph comments! It is nice to be able to communicate with people who are able to respect this forum for sharing ideas and opinions, without getting hung up on some tug-of-war of who is right and who is wrong. I really enjoy the fact that even if we have slightly differing opinions, we are able to attempt to clarify and understand one another more within this bizarre world of internet speak, where the human form is but an idea. Thanks.
