At the college I studied Russian language and literature and had the pleasure of reading the novel War and Peace : did I commit a crime, did I offend Russians for reading one of their books and trying to learn their history , poets and literature ? Frankly the comments I read here are quite ridiculous, one may enjoy or dislike a movie, but claiming that no one has a right to shoot a movie because of a different nationality is an offence to human intelligence.
@lamarchesado Yeah, you r right. This work, however, is an act of respect to the memory of a great writer of all times. But i also cn understand people who dislike it - it's.... inaccurate, really. and this music.... and it's...such an american movie))) no offence intended, but Russians can be played by Russians only, at least, for now.... and what u can't take away from them, russians can play Anybody... this is their passion...))) However, this one is a good film))
@AigerimKopeyeva oh, as for that I dislike inaccuracy too and I am not particularly fond of modern Hollywood movies also. But I think we must give a chance to everybody. It's not long since Russia is an open country, we need time to understand and know better this nation... but Tolstoy is world heritage and ...we must give a chance ! :-)
@AigerimKopeyeva Most Hollywood productions from the last 20 years are rubbish, but there are excellent independent American films. Besides, this isn't an American film. As for your claim that "only Russians" should portray Russian characters, while there are many talented Russian actors, it's absurdly narrow-minded to insist that foreign actors shouldn't portray Russian characters. The British, for instance, have produced excellent adaptations of Tolstoy & Dostoevsky's novels.
@auroradawn23 if you read accurately, you would notice that i didn't "insist that foreign actors shouldn't portray russian characters". I meant, that nobody can do it better than Russians themselves. that spirit is very hard to play onscreen, if it's not youre inborn,
p.s. "narrow-minded"? no, it's only that i'm sure in what i'm saying. in prev comment if u notuced, i did support the idea of "giving a chance" to everybody. ...ok, doesn't matter...
Everything is terrible. This Natasha is not a countess, but a poor girl from a province, "llimita", looking for the glamour. No manners, no character, no personality.Еще одна кухарка в "Едим дома".
This is absurd. Aram Khatchaturian's Masquerade Suite wasn't even written yet in 19th century Russia, Khatchaturian wasn't even born yet, and he was Armenian, talk about historically inaccurate.
I'm half Russian, half French, but both halves are appalled by this version of Vojna i Mir... But I guess, when you've seen Bondarchuk's movie, you can't really appreciate any other version. Still I think that Non-Russians shouldn't be allowed to shoot adaptations of Russian books, nor to play one of their characters (unless of the characters himself isn't Russian).
Clémence Poésy here is just NOT credible as Natasha !
@purplelun - By that token no one but the Brits should be allowed to make film adaptations of British novels. And what about the French? Are only French actors, directors, etc., allowed to make adaptations of French novels? What rubbish.
Wow, how beautiful, how romantic...
