Nearly every state n america has a diff accent. I'm from Texas and when I went to South Carolina non-stop ppl would say whoa, I love ur accent are u from Texas? U can really tell if u compare two ppl from diff places. Like I would sound completly diff from someone n North Dakota. Lol
Tons of u ppl r such jerks, like for real what does it matter how thick is accent may or may not be. Is it killing u? I don't think so, so everybody needs to get over yourself.
This isn't unusual for Scots who have lived in Canada or the US for some time - they tend to lose much of their accents - but you can hear the traces that remain, if you listen carefully. Just a simple process of adaptation and enculturation, not an attempt to sound 'American' on Gerard Butler's part. Listen to talk show host Craig Ferguson (he's Scots as well), and you'll see that he has lost his accent too, but traces that belie his origins are still audible.
I am from Scotland but don't sound Scottish. Funny how lots of people think that there is only one Scottish accent, there is about 5 or 6 accents in Scotland. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Highland, Aberdeen and Royal Deside - All different.
It's amazing how Gerald is going for Connery as in always using his Scottish accent, wether he was playing a Greek King or an American gangster.
I have no idea why people think that it's somehow wrong for an actor to be required to change his accent based on his fucking role. That's what the guy gets paid for.
i dont know why everyone is saying he sounds american..... think for a second about an american accent....... Does he actually sound like that? no he doesnt. Maybe he's just naturally picked up a bit of the accent. MY cousin moved to london and se was scottish before she moved and now she speaks like shes from there, but you can tell shes scottish aswell. It just depends on the words the person says.
@marmus2901 scottish accents are different. im from perth, scotland and we sound nothing like glaswegians. Our accents are more propper and posh apparently. If your from dundee your dundonian. theres all types of ways scottish people speak. It depends how strong the accent is and where your from. Theres propper scotish that probebly some of you wouldny understand lol :)
@monthenmaw lol, as an american who picked up an English accent (though it's mixed Lancashire and Kentish with a touch of Cornish due to where I lived) I know it's hard to control an accent. Mine changed without me trying, but for the life of me I can't use my native Californian accent if I try. Poor guy, getting stuck in that awkward american.....
Oh.. so many Yanks moaning.... like there are no americans pretend to be Scot... Irish.. or something else? WTF does.. im 3rd geneation Irsh mean really? In that case im 19th generation viking.... good luck to the man.
@swp4445 "WTF does.. im 3rd geneation Irsh mean really?" Um...I think it means that they're 3rd generation Irish. I'm no expert though.
"In that case im 19th generation viking"
You probably are. The Vikings invaded many parts of the British Isles. If you want to say that it's fine with me. I'm certainly not going to have a hissy fit about it.
@MrBigjim1888 He hasn't been in America for a fortnight, he's been over there working and making a career for himself for quite a while now. I mean, he can't exactly roll up with a Scottish accent to play the part of an American, can he? It's called method acting, and well done to him for being committed enough to change himself for his work.
@NorthernSoulGer He probably does it so people can understand him.. Do you really blame him? Professionally I would do whatever would make it easiest to understand me.. Plus constantly doing fake accents & working with voice coaches would probably screw me up & my natural accent up a bit.. I don't think he is a Yankee wannabe. Hollywood is just where the money is.. So why not?
some one tell me cause im from Canada, do we have an accent, and im not talking about the Eastern coast because i know they have one but is the rest kind of like the US?
@curtisisadog haha..i am an american with a close friend from nova scotia...she def has an accent to me, but what boggles my mind is that I have an accent to her, and funny when we talk on the phone, i find myself sounding like her...but wait..i suck at geography, is nova scotia considered the eastern coast kind?? ha ha..but yeah, no as obvious to me as a scott or britt but def an accent..and a cool one....:)
@47jenken Yeah it is considered part of the East Coast, I am from around the Toronto area (Southern Ontario), and I think our accent would be similar to states like Michigan and New York, but i'm not quite sure... But I guess if you don't hear an accent from others, that means you sound like them.
i wish i was irish, but with a scottish accent. love irish people and love the scottish accent. sure, i'm from norway, so i have an accent, but it sucks...:/

@AmieLo4 we should swap then lol i love the scottish accent i have an american southern accent and i hate it sometimes trust me alot of people in america dont pronounce things correctly either or everyone has their own way of saying something and it kind of varies from state to state
Listen to his accent closely at the start, when he says story, it's starting to sound more and more American. his pronounciation has an American twang to it, so it's not entirely Scottish, close though, and yes, he was born in Paisley. I have Irish heritage, but am Scottish, in fact many Scots with Irish Heritage, their history of the families over there run straight back to Scotland.
@FunnyJamieMaloney a substantial percentage of people born in scotland are of irish decent. especially those from the west of scotland. hes defos scottish matee
@jaysea32 okay....what does "on the wind up mean"?..lol....i'm not that good at slang stuff....well regardless whether is is half American or not it's still an awesome accent. :D
@Sk8rckychick Maybe in your opinion but I'm proud of my Boston accent. I love my family members accent when I visit them in Ireland but. I'm still very proud of my accent. Your accent describes your character and where your from.
@Sk8rckychick its hard to say American accents are so boring since each section of America has their own accents and each state within each section has its own twist on those accents
@lilstarsrockz Yes they are! well my accent i guess cause i'm so use to having the PA accent that it's just boring to me. I didn't mean ALL american accents are boring :p
@Sk8rckychick hey we have some interesting accents also. new york, minnesota, southern. you may think we have it boring while foreigners notice them and love them more than theirs :)
@Sk8rckychick | are you kidding? the old texan accent, the new england coast accent, those insane accents they have all around appalachia, the german-california surfer dude accent, louisiana cajun, louisiana anglo, french savannian, virginian-carolinian, the german-american hoosier accent, the missoura underground-cave-alien accent, utah english, the new york accent, the new jersey accent, and ect..
@Sk8rckychick american accents are only boring because we live in america. you fail to realize all the different accents in our country. texas, the south, new york, they all have distinct and beautiful accents.
You know the word "american" could stand for anyone from Canada to Uruguay. Mexicans would call themselves "American." Also, there is like 10 or more US accents. They're all boring to you? Are you just a hater of the USA, the country in which you were probably born?

@Sk8rckychick Maybe in your opinion but I'm proud of my Boston accent. I love my family members accent when I visit them in Ireland but. I'm still very proud of my accent. Your accent describes your character and where your from.

@Sk8rckychick its hard to say American accents are so boring since each section of America has their own accents and each state within each section has its own twist on those accents

@Sk8rckychick
You know the word "american" could stand for anyone from Canada to Uruguay. Mexicans would call themselves "American." Also, there is like 10 or more US accents. They're all boring to you? Are you just a hater of the USA, the country in which you were probably born?
