I very much enjoyed this film of West Indies, since I myself am from there and my family too. It brings back so many good memories and makes me think of how harder it was back then with not so many conveniences, so it inspires one to keep moving on. It also made me a tad sentimental. A reminder of the disastrous consequences of the war for Britain and western Europe generally. It bankrupted us, putting us in debt to the Americans, who proceeded to dominate western Europe economically and (perhaps more importantly) culturally. Vitally, the death of so many British men in the war led to the govt-sponsored importation of non-white labour from 1948. Conceived as a temporary measure, it never ended and has transformed Britain utterly.

I'm from Canada and my dad was a West Indian WWII veteran who volunteered to fight for Canada. He was an officer and a gentleman. After the war he obtained his Master's from McGill University and became a diplomat. He received many honours and awards in post war life. He led by example, In 2002 received the Queen's medal, awarded to Canadians who made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, their community or to Canada over the previous fifty years. Please keep conversations civil.

The statment you refer to does not talk of 1000's of blacks in London but rathe Liz's anger that any blacks should be here, reflecting the publics view. The was roman slaves here who were black but the difference is that they never came for benefits and they blended in. Slum Dog Millionaire was directed by Danny Boyle, was one of the top movies of last year - a joint Anglo-Indian venture and a very good film. Not really rubbish.
Babylon is a fantastic British movie about Jamaican/British culture - try watching it you might learn something, there's a few of your sort in there too, you might feel at home.

If they were so hard working why did they have to come here from a poverty stricken under developed country. truth is they dont work harder than Brits. look at the unemployment statistics for the race %. I very much enjoyed this film of West Indies, since I myself am from there and my family too. It brings back so many good memories and makes me think of how harder it was back then with not so many conveniences, so it inspires one to keep moving on. It also made me a tad sentimental. Thanks very much!

To me, to regret this is not "racist", but simply a preference for one type of society rather than another. I personally think it has been detrimental to Britain to move from a country with a common, shared culture, ethnicity and language to one splintered and fractured into innumerable races, ethnicities and cultures, with often incompatible values and beliefs. The intolerance of those who scream "racist" at anyone who dissents from conventional acceptance of multiculturalism is frightening.

A reminder of the disastrous consequences of the war for Britain and western Europe generally. It bankrupted us, putting us in debt to the Americans, who proceeded to dominate western Europe economically and (perhaps more importantly) culturally. Vitally, the death of so many British men in the war led to the govt-sponsored importation of non-white labour from 1948. Conceived as a temporary measure, it never ended and has transformed Britain utterly.

I'm from Canada and my dad was a West Indian WWII veteran who volunteered to fight for Canada. He was an officer and a gentleman. After the war he obtained his Master's from McGill University and became a diplomat. He received many honours and awards in post war life. He led by example, In 2002 received the Queen's medal, awarded to Canadians who made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, their community or to Canada over the previous fifty years. Please keep conversations civil.

European traders bought into the slave trade, and the West Indies was the plantation that supplied America wuith Slaves and Europe with other resources. Slum Dog Millionaire was directed by Danny Boyle, was one of the top movies of last year - a joint Anglo-Indian venture and a very good film. Not really rubbish.
Babylon is a fantastic British movie about Jamaican/British culture - try watching it you might learn something, there's a few of your sort in there too, you might feel at home.

Still, I wonder if my parents would have suffered less savage racial discrimination if they were a bit older and had they come over to help in WWII rather than the huge and largely unrecognised effort they still made to get bombed-out England back on its feet just a few years after the war.

If they were so hard working why did they have to come here from a poverty stricken under developed country. truth is they dont work harder than Brits. look at the unemployment statistics for the race %. It shows they were very lazy. As for working harder than me. very doubtful as I am fanatical in my work. They never served Britain but themselves in the war. It is an insult to my family who did die for Britain the home. Were these people so naive as to expect a welcome?

Africans were taken as slaves and suffered centuries of degradation and oppression building the system we enjoy so much today. When will you bigotted people learn the lessons of history. They have as much right to be in this country as white people have to be in any country they have colonised - think the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, india and so on. As I said, you're the one who's missing out on the wondeful diversity of life. If it was left to youy Hitler would have won the war!

@Britmovies @Britmovies My grandfather was a Jamaican who joined the RAF during the second world war and remained in this country until he died in the early nineties, during this time he was never unemployed and never claimed benefits.
