You know how Khan wanted revenge on Kirk for the death of his wife? His wife actually was a red shirt. It was Khan's fault for not seeing that one coming from a 100 miles away....
@glennboy28 In the original series, whenever an away team beamed down to a planet someone would die. Now they can't go off killing the main characters so they usually had an extra die. It just so happened that these other officers wore red shirts (you see Kirk has a yellow shirt and both Spock and McCoy wear blue shirts). These extras became known as red shirts. So whenever you hear the term red shirt, it refers to an extra who was gonna die. Khan's wife was a red shirt.
