Ani sings this second best. Phil Ochs sang it the best and long may he rest in peace. I miss you so much Phil and I am glad to see other arists have realized how wonderful and talented he was.
@arsepoetica71 What? well perhaps you can ask Dylan when you get the chance. I like Phil but why even compare? In fact why compare Dylan to anyone? there simply is no comparison.
@arsepoetica71 Sorry... I'm super interested in this time and all this music and I know that Dylan didn't agree. Dylan pretty much thought he was the shit and shat all over Phil and his music. Phil always looked up to him and Dylan burned him.
But I agree, he's amazing. For me Dylan is a better poet and Phil's attributes are much more far reaching then simply his music.
I don't have the energy to read through all the comments, but it's entirely possible that whoever you're talking to wasn't talking about Abbie, but about Phil Ochs, who wrote this song and who killed himself in 1976
i used to get laughed at for learning all these phil ochs songs. its great to here someone else knows about him and plays his music. greatest song ever written is "when in rome"( at least top 20)
@bhagenbdrinkin I had to laugh at your old comment. There are a million of us out there that think we are the only one who discovered Phil Ochs and saw the beauty and creativity in everything he wrote. We are alone together.
I love this song - the words - the meaning - the stance - the stand - the philosophy. It is how I wish to live my life and I salute all those who stand up for what they believe - those who stand up and are counted.
Watched this movie for the first time last night and was very affected by it - a fantastic job by everyone involved. Your video is absolutely brilliant - does justice to the song AND the images.
moustachke, i've put a few of phil's songs up. check them out. yes, he was a great writer. we could have really used his voice over the last three decades.
Ani released a version of this song that is absolutely genius - this isn't it, unfortunately, and this one isn't impressive. I don't know where this one's from. You should hear the one she put out on record.
cuz the editors, or music director must have felt like he had to 'reach' the age market share target group, with a more contemporary artist. i hope phil dropped cigar ashes on his head for it ;)
You can find it on the album "swing set"

Dylan seems like a douche bag with the ego the size of his bank account, so I doubt that very much.

I really appreciate the footage from "Steal This Movie" here in this video.
Abbie, and Phil are two major heros of mine along with Dorothy Day and UU Bruce Phillips.

God bless you Phil my beautiful friend. Also, RIP Abbie Hoffmann. Never to be forgotten. Fuck Bush and his murdering fascist pig-cunts.

RIght on arsepoetica71 ... Phil's music is so much better than Dylan's and only slowing (but relentlessly) being recognized so.

RIP Phil Ochs...one of the great forgotten geniuses of music...so much better than Dylan...and I think Dylan would agree.
arsepoetica71 2 years ago 13
@arsepoetica71 no he wouldn't.
I'll never knock ochs, but he's nowhere near as prolific as Dylan.

@bbear8 Well, killing oneself at 35 kinda stops one's songwriting ability, don't it?

It's on one of Difranco's EPs, I believe. You can probably find it on AllMusic -- can't remember the name but it was released around 2000.

Perhaps because Phil Ochs is DEAD? Phil would have been the first to tell you protest songs don't do a damn bit of good unless someone SINGS them.
msbfd 4 years ago 2
Phil's original version was better. And if the filmmakers had used it, they may have drawn more attention to his work. Ochs was/is magnificent.
