I'm in the United States. These lights are for bicycles. There is no national policy in the U.S. governing bicycle lights. Some states and municipalities have their own laws overseeing bicycle lights, and anyone who uses a light like this with colored flashers must be careful with traffic laws (many states apply motor vehicle laws to bicycles, since they require bikes to be ridden in the roadways).
We have laws stating the minimum we need, any additional lighting is not regulated, we just have to have white at front, red at black, so a blue/red wouldn't be possible here. Though it is also a law that we are not allowed to impersonate the police...
I'm surprised the US couldn't just latch that on and it would cover loads of other possibilities.
Colored lights in the U.S. are different in different states. In some states, a red/blue bicycle light would be impersonating a police officer. In other states, it could be illegal use of fire department lights. In other states, nothing. Many states do not have laws about bicycle lighting, only vehicle lighting, since only cities have police bicycle patrols.
That said, most cities have municipal laws about it. And, as I said before, some states include bicycles under their definition of a vehicle, so a bicycle must abide by all traffic and equipment regulations the same as a car, truck, or bus.
You can't really talk about "the US" that way. Only a very small fraction of the laws by which people must abide in the States are federal laws from the U.S. government. Most are state laws, which vary from state to state, and there are also a number of municipal laws that affect people.
Aye I understand that, but it's easier to just say US and hopes the generalisation is adequate.
I've always found how "far" apart US states are, and often wonder why it is actually called the UNITED states of... soon the EU might be like you lot :p EU economy is already bigger than the US lol.
I've been in countries where they use them on their cars... no one takes notice, same for the actual Police though :/
And I only activated the siren so quickly because it was recorded in a dorm room late at night. Its a siren activated by pushing (and holding) a button. Not a toggle.
I'm not sure what the actual rating is, but you could check the manufacturer's website for that info. The pitch is strong enough that it gets attention from pedestrians very well, even at a distance. Not sure how it performs in traffic, but it is made for police, so I would assume it's at least attention-getting at low speeds.
i don't have the unit anymore (this video is a year old) and i can't remember. i think so, but maybe it attached to the light. just check with niterider or with a retailer. botach tactical usually has good deals on these things.
also, they came out with an LED edition since i posted this video (which is a halogen unit). pricey, but long-lasting and powerful

So when you push the button, how long does the siren sound for, until you let go or for a few seconds??
CycleMan2200 2 years ago
as long as you hold it
popomobile 2 years ago
How loud is this? I have an airhorn but cant find anything that is as loud as this, plus It relys on air which does not do well in cold weather.

So does the siren itself mount to the handlebars?

The siren is an option for the light kit. You can get:
1) The lights only.
2) + the colored lenses (red, blue, clear, any combination)
3) + the siren with option of mounting brackets

What siren was that?
dominickingofdominic 3 years ago
It's the NiteRider Digital Patrol siren, part of the NR Digital Patrol kit....
