  • I remember watching this on tv as a 10 year old in 1963 and was inspired to play the guitar which I do even today. Him and Julian Bream have never really been surpassed because of the enormous repertoire they both played and recorded. I saw both artists as soloists and also as a duo in the early 80's. I feel honoured and lucky to have seen them at their very best.

  • Insane mind-bending space-rock java by the Australian God of the Guitar.

  • amazing! too many TROLLS on this page

  • I like this song. La Volta by john Wiliams

  • @JEREACUNA this song makes me very happy

  • Wonderful !!!!

  • Such a short song, but as beautiful as any other.

  • That low bass drone reminds me of a hurdy-gurdy. Very clever.

  • I like this piece of music; I first heard it played on Classic FM by the Medieval Babes around 10 yrs ago. It would also be a good tune for an ice-cream van, as an alternative to Greensleeves.

  • This piece sounds rough compared to some of JW's later performances. But there's a kind of youthful energy in it that's hard to beat.

  • We are doing this song in my guitar 2 class in high school

  • its a great piece and is acually very easy to play

  • ... but not easy to play like that.

  • @bigmuso123

Your mom's easy to play, but you don't see me pointing that out.

  • this tune is amazing

  • who is the composer of this piece?

  • Michael Praetorius

  • He was 22 years old.. :):):)

  • Interesting video showing a promissing young John Williams... interesting...

    *****

  • Yes. Salterello di Vincenzo Galilei ;-)

  • But it is the version by Michael Praetorius, from Terpsichore, #210. The 2nd and 3rd part are original and came directly from Galilei´s Saltarello. The first part is an additional from Praetorius Volte #201. Obviously Praetorius knew only such a mixed version, as they also occur in Thysius Lute Book from 1601.

  • Its so good its creepy

  • Amazing! Nuff' said

  • Gile-Crazy-Nuts-Incredible

  • finalmente john williams da giovane!

  • Fantastic. Plays like a hooligan, in the best possible sense of the word. Keep on rockin' in the free world John Williams!

  • That's a pretty good piece. Does anyone have the music for it?

  • awesome!!!!!!!!! :D

  • If Williams isn`t a Guitar nerd i dont no what is.i think they spirited him away from Adeliade SA at the age of 12 to the London conservatori, yeah man he was born with that thing on his knee & more power to him.

  • dude, do you have any idea of what playing guitar does to women?

  • what's so frickin' great about "a night out".

Any a**hole can have a "night out." Can any A**hole play the guitar like he Williams does?

I play like crap, but it's a thrill greater than most nights out to be able to come close to mastering a beautiful piece of music.

  • I actually think John Williams is a great musician. Why should I fuck off!

I like all kinds of music, so that makes me not a "classical fuckwit."

I was commenting about some folks who suggested he didn't have a life or something. They equated having a life with "going out."

I suggested that "going out" might not be the only thrill in life.

    Why a fuckwit?

  • How magnificent!

But what guitar is he playing? I thik it is a Hernendez y Aguado. I remember he used the same guitar when he recorded F.Sor's 20 studies. Am I right?

  • I think not: to start with comparing them is of little use because of the different genres: Paco plays mostly his own compositions that are well-suited to his own technique, Williams plays existing compositions. However much I like Paco, I've seen him play rather more 'classical' repertoire (Aranjuez, for instance) and while he's certainly up to it, he doesn't 'rip' John Williams. But still, it's comparing apples and oranges.

  • oranges are better ;)

  • wonderful playing. I heard Milica when she was that age (she not much older now!) and she was aroun the same standard as JW. bodes well for guitar.

  • What a powerful performance by John Williams when he was 22! He is the only guitarist I admire. Other guitarists are none compared with him.

  • We all have our own tastes but you can't forget about David russell!

  • What about Julian Bream?

  • @jessyquedens What about him? This is John Williams not Julian Bream.

  • @ditman333 Don't remember what I was replying to--it was two years ago--but I thought this was a very lively version. Probably very like the way Julian Bream would have played it and in contrast to early John Williams, which was technically impressive but rather dry.

  • Nice post - what year was this, anyone.

  • amazing, absolutely mesmerizing

  • its vincenco galilei: saltarello

  • This is Michael Praetorius' Volta, from a suite of secular music called "Terpsichore", but it's very similar to "Saltarello".

  • I thought for sure it was Saltarello". At least parts of it like I saw on Ben Bolts instruction video......VERY similar!

  • Quite right - it is from Praetorius' Terpsichore (1612 I think - I have the sheet music somewhere). This is actually the least interesting piece of the four IMHO. The 'ballet' is awesome, but I am a sucker for the key of D.

  • This is definately an amazing performance with flawless guitar playing! Does anyone know where I may find sheet music or even a tab for it?

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Christopher Parkening guitar method book 2 has a similar version...Its called Salterello

  • You can say what you want about him...

But armony and peace is what he gives !

  • Il migliore di tutti...

  • Well I know it's John Williams but who composed it?

  • william byrd i think composed this piece

  • Actually, the La Volta was transcribed by John Williams from Terpsichore by Michael Praetorius. Praetorius and Byrd were alive around the same time, though.

The Ballet from the same Terpsichore (transcribed by Williams too) is also a beautiful piece.

  • This Is Great! Flawless! Anybody know who this Is by?

  • You should not speak so much shit...

You as a amateur guitarist should be quiet, you cant imagine the skill of people like John Williams, I either....

Of Course every Human Being gets older, like John Williams do.But his knowledge is bigger than yours and mine together.Pls stop posting in every video how bad he is -_-. Be sure he´s better than you will ever be -_-

    thx

  • Sorry but I don't take directions from teenagers in Germany. Now go seig heil to someone else, cry baby.

  • I should write support to the admins :=).But let us stop this discussion. This is youtube not a portal for flaming kiddies :=).I´m from Croatia btw :).

  • John Williams was so much better then than he is now. What passion and great choice of an instrument...even with the bad recording.

I feel the same way about Parkening too. What happens to these young lions after they make it big? They get really boring. Sorry Mr. Kilbian, but I dig this piece.

  • I haven't seen John Williams so young yet. When was this recorded? I wouldn't recognize him. He is very, very good. I also like Manuel Barrueco and Andres Segovia, John Williams,...all clasical guitarists.

    Keep listening good music, By

where can i find the sheet?

Bravo John

  • Wow, I heard JOhn Williams was no.1 guitarist, but, dang, I hadnt heard a bit of him...He's fantastic!

  • How can you say that? This piece is bristling with energy.

  • Perhaps it is the drone-like bass writing? Sounds like a rennaisance era piece, or at least in that style (haven't looked it up). And it wasn't popular yet to play period instruments in 63. I think maybe it'd sound better on an older instrument.

  • @tmjcbs Boring??? jejejeje another deaf!!!

  • Beautiful in every way!

  • He is 1/4 Chinese too. The first two guys who commented should like to hear that!

  • stewth mate.

  • This guy is good! Nice outfi too!

    Dr. Vin Bong

  • JW always seems to have been in a class of his own. His playing never ceases to please as well as to amaze me. He is an inspiration.

    Dr. Gene Wong.
