Only professional way to do this is what is called :SMD Surface Mounting. It takes immense skill (and luck) to do this kind of work with a radio shack soldering iron. If you have no idea about advanced soldering techniques. DO NOT attempt this. You will only cry when you get an E20 error and cant pwn n00bs on your call of duty. And your mom grounds you for breaking such an expensive, unreliable piece of equipment. Although i must say, thats pretty hot to change the IC like that for added RAM.
@santiainen yeah I got 2 free xboxs and one I paid 15$ for from a shop...with free game...no controllers thou. 325Gb IDE har drives cos next to nothing 50$. Soft mod it and bobs your uncle. Every retro console under the sun emulated in one box...yeah with XBOX games on hard drive streaming media on XBMC...awesomeness.

@matyus111 Ram will only speed things up when there isn't enough of it! In XBMC the xbox has too little of it always. I can tell you that my 64mb xbox locks up on anything when doing 1080i. 23megs left when xbmc starts! 0mb left when playing a movie, when scrolling thru my 600 movies it will absolutely crash when starting playback. In 480i there is 48mb memory left. And xbmc does everything without a glitch... So xbmc definitely needs ram. especially in higher resolutions.

@inricheetos It is not a matter of "smart", you just have to practice your soldering techniques. This level of soldering just takes lots of practice. Finding someone that can help you is good too.

For long term quality of the solder job, don't use the rosin flux the way this guy did. He leaves alot of it all over the solder joint. It's corrosive that's why it helps when removing the chip.
He should have been using a b-2 solder wick that's thinner and contained rosin flux in it.
At the very least use some 99% isopropyl to clean away the execess flux after the job is done.
@matthew12222 Straight isopropyl alcohol is crap for removing flux. Commercial flux remover is a mixture of isopropyl, ethyl alcohol, and hexane. Too much flux is better than not enough.
Uhh.. whats the point of this? Even if you upgrade to 128MB of RAM, there are NO GAMES designed to take advantaged of it! They program the games specifically for 64MB and its not like windows that will "recognize" more ram and just use it.
If you want your old Xbox games you play better, just get a 360 and play your old games on that. YEah, I know you cant rip the games to the hard drive, with the 360 and on and on... yeah, ok... but its just absolutely pointless to add more ram to an xbox.

It would be easier to use the hot air gun at low speed around 5 ml/s. Solder iron requires contact and that will move the IC from its leads.

He should have been using a b-2 solder wick that's thinner and contained rosin flux in it.
At the very least use some 99% isopropyl to clean away the execess flux after the job is done.

@matthew12222 Straight isopropyl alcohol is crap for removing flux. Commercial flux remover is a mixture of isopropyl, ethyl alcohol, and hexane. Too much flux is better than not enough.

Uhh.. whats the point of this? Even if you upgrade to 128MB of RAM, there are NO GAMES designed to take advantaged of it! They program the games specifically for 64MB and its not like windows that will "recognize" more ram and just use it.
If you want your old Xbox games you play better, just get a 360 and play your old games on that. YEah, I know you cant rip the games to the hard drive, with the 360 and on and on... yeah, ok... but its just absolutely pointless to add more ram to an xbox.

come on guys this extra ram wont do anything.xbox is programmed to play all games smoothly with 64 mb of ram.there is no reason to install linux on an xbox this is really lame.go get a cheap notebook and install whatever u want..

the Xbox's GPU can only address 64MB of RAM. So that extra 64MB is pretty much useless unless you plan on installing linux
