The guitar starts with a G and the progression of chords are G-C-D throughout the song, though for the last verse (I dedicate myself to Thee, O Lord) the chords end with d-c-g. Hope this helps.

I love the 'gutteral' folk singers. It sounds like something is stuck in their throat, but in a good way. Perhaps it is their "heart" which makes it sound more sincere...
