Better luck next time Colin, good try though. You might try some cold blue, the down fall is it will have a bluish tint to it, from a light blue to an almost dark blue depending on how much you use. Anyway Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you.
Well now you know for future reference ! , i hear that there is now a UK distributor of Duracoat setup somewhere, I'd check it out !, Have a very merry christmas mate
Good effort Colin, its a shame it didn't work out. Using primer probably would help; but if you are careful with the chemicals and the power supply, electroplating it could provide a more hard-wearing and unique finnish (sorry if this has already been suggested). Merry Christmas.
@ThrHillSeeker Thanks buddy, yeah its a shame but a good learning experience. I appreciate your tips too. Something I will be sure to look into. Merry Christmas to you too my friend.
I had my doubts all along on this project, but was interested in the results anyway. Hey Colin, nothing ventured, nothing gained. A for effort. Still have your emergency blanket vids saved and trying to get to, very interested in those, so keep up the good efforts...Dash
Can't have a victory every time Colin. But like everything, what don't kill you, makes you stronger. I'm sure you'll work out a solution to the problem when you tackle it next time. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones and great to see you posting up the vids again.
@351xb1973 Hi Paul, yeah I agree. It was disappointing outcome but a worthwhile project and good learning experience. Merry Christmas to you and yours as well my friend, take care.
the material used has been polished and when metal is polished, the pours or finish is smooth, not allowing anything to grab. A clear coat would not help, possibly glass beading it prior but this will allow rust to grab hold. anodizing or black oxide is your best bet. And even for the black oxide, there is a pree soak to bring a flat finish, a little rougher than start to have the coating take hold. The best way to restore that one colin is soak in thinner or acitone. then wd40 to prevent rust
@PHARRAOH Hi Alan. Yeah I guess its something I will have to put some more thought into in the future. I am not sure what I will do but its been a good learning experience so far. Merry Christmas my good friend, take care.
@Goose7523 Hi mate, yeah I actually spent a couple of hours sanding the components and indicated in the previous videos. I feel now though that I would of done a bit more. Merry Christmas.
Hi and good to see you again, Colin. Thanks for showing! ...cool, you make it, ...out the Leatherman back together ; ) ...Best wishes and Merry Christmas, my friend. sepp
damn shame tht didn't work good job on the knife though, sorry i have not been commenting had lots of school projects to do,still all good now hope ur ok and i look forward to seeing more vids.
Paint is paint. You can't expect paint to stay on anything. That's why polished or brushed metal is your best bet. Oh, and it is Victorinox, not Victorianox. I really am an A hole, aren't I? ;-]
@ColinOutdoors Fair enough. That was a lot of work you did and I'm sorry it scratched off. Have you considered powder coating, or do you think the heat involved would adversely affect the metal?
Hey Colin. Just an idea if you don't duracoat it next time around. When you get more paint, see if they have an adhesion promoter. If you can find it, it works really well on plastics and fiberglass. It should work on most metals. It will say what is and isn't recommended. Just a thought. Take Care Colin and Happy Holidays.
@Biohazard3435 Hi my friend, thank you so much for the great tip. I will have a look for the paints with the adhesion promoter on in the future, Merry Christmas.
Welcome back Colin. It's a shame it didn't have the desired finish, the concept was decent though. The dry colour was very nice, and to be honest I actually like the gnarly look. As always, thanks for sharing :)
how about some high temp baked on grill paint?....It may hold up better and still be nice and cheap..as long as you remembered to re temper (quench) the parts, I would think you would be ok...just an idea...
Thanks for showing us the process and bringing us along for the ride, Col. Successful or not, it was interesting to see what resulted from your efforts. Well done.
Hey Dude, I know it's dissapointing when projects don't work out but if it's any consulation, I have a Leatherman Micra that I bought new somewhere around 2000-2001 and it came painted a dark forest green. Anyway, I still have it and have been carrying it since then but the trick is, it's completely silver now. Just from being in my pocket with keys and other knives, nuts & bolts and all the other junk I pick up, the paint has chipped off and it happened fairly quickly. So their paint sucks too.
@packofhounds Hi my friend. Yeah its a shame but still a fun experience. The green Micra was cool, sorry to hear your coating has worn off over time. I guess that is to me expected. Merry Christmas
Maybe not successfull but I'm pretty sure a bunch of fellows learned with it!! Just because it didn't worked doesn't mean it was a complete failure, you can always learn something out of trying!! Keep the effort my friend I'm sure you'll find a way!! Merry Christmas and take care!!
@2dividedby3equals666 Yeah I agree my friend, it was a good learning experience. Thanks and I hope you have a very Merry Christmas as well, take care.
Or in an extreme case, there's a technic for blackening stainless steel, by heating it with a blow torch, then quenching it in a bath of ordinary motor oil.
It gives a deep looking finish, with a slight shine to it. I've never attempted it, but seen it done on small things like bolt heads and the like. Obviously you wouldnt want to heat ur tool heads for fear of loosing the temper, but im sure the handle would look good.
How about sending the handles away to be powder coated?
@mrmactknife Some more brilliant ideas. I will do some research and see what options I can go with. Thanks for the support and encouragement. Take care.
Halfords own brand paint is garbage. A friend and I used it on a part for a car, and it just came right off, with just a fingernail, it was terrible. We used Hammerite matt black BBQ paint in then, which worked quite well.
There are several different things you could try with this knife, flat it right back to shinny metal and try gun re blueing gel availible in most gunshops, or online, not sure how hard wearing it would be, and I think it only comes in black.
Mabay try some metal paint like for fences hope u get it to work for u or go to your local car paint shop thay might do it for u cause my nearest 1 sprays anything you have and its not as expensive as spray paint at a £10 a can so good luck with your project
Sorry it didn't work out Colin. Maybe if you bead blast it, then spray it. The bead blasting will make it less "shinny".... just a thought. Merry Christmas!
Another vote for Duracoat. Stainless is very difficult to deal with as far as coating. First take it a part and degrease as much as possible, then have it bead blasted, (you will have to put a edge back on the knife),clean it again, put Duracoat Parkerizing finish (as a primer) then finish it in a Duracoat color of choice. But realize that the areas of extreme wear like the joints of the pliers will still come off eventually, the rest should wear like nails.
Rome wasn't built in a day as they say but I reckon your not going to just give up on it and fair play to you for showing us how it turned out despite it not being a success
@Naturliebe Hi Tito my good friend. Yeah its a shame it didn't work, good experience though. I hope you and your family have a brilliant Christmas too, take care.
You know duracoate makes a do it yourself kit over here. Comes with an aerosol so you don't need an air compressor and airbrush equipment don't know if you can get it there or not but worth a check. Only about $30 I think

Good to see the update on this project, Colin. Bummer that it didn't work out as planned. It is always good to see things that don't work out, as it is one step closer to the solution that does work.
I don't think the lacquer is going to work. It is going to increase the thickness of the coating and will still cause the blades to rub against one another.
great video as always Colin, Wishing you a Very Merry Christmas And a Happy new year hope to get out more next year do a bit more camping might even post some video's myself yet. Keep up the good work mate as always greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Sorry that it didn´t work out as you wanted it to..
I would have used sandpaper (240P or finer) on the metal for the paint to get a good grip on the multitool.
As for plastic its easeir to paint but you still need that sandpaperfinish to get the paint to really stuck.
I will powdercoat my multitool, but just the handles, and i dont know what i will do to the tools inside...they are already blackcoated from factory.
Have a really good X-mas and stay safe man.

Cheers
Brian
