Nice to see that Han Bennink pulled funny faces even when he was young. Damn, Johnny Griffin could play - even if playing really, really, really fast was a bit of a blind alley to go down, he still manages to make it sound like it was worth exploring.
Saw Johnny in Milwaukee. Most artists would hang in an upstairs room between sets. Not Johnny. He was right there with the audience and loved talking to his fans.. We had a 15 min. conversation about mouthpieces. I saw him 5X's over the years. Musically he was truly an amazing and unique player, and he always listened to his band mates and appreciated their contributions. I felt so grateful to be able to see and hear him. He never disappointed.
@Juupp King Super 20 Silver-Sonic tenor sax (with double-socket neck in this vid--so pre-1960 here; though he was said to have owned several of them); Otto Link Tone Master (said to be heavily modified/opened up to .120 or more)
Remarkably few comments for this vid. Let me say that I heard Griffin live in those days, Art Taylor being his perfect foil. It was a devastating evening, during which The Griff brought the house down. 45 years ago, but never forgotten, no Sir.
What's the matter? What is the screaming about?
