For all who have commented on tuning, Eddie tunes a half step down on almost all of the older VH songs. Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and George Lynch did/do this as well. Go play along with "In My Dreams" by Dokken and have your guitar tuned standard (440). You will see that you are a half step "high".
You can, but it sounds better at Drop D tuning. Just hit your thirs string, and tune down the low E to match it. If correct the first two low strings will sound like a power cord if you hit them both on the same fret.
Just a suggestion for us beginners... could you use a more straight-on view of the fretboard instead of an angle? Otherwise great job slowing it down! Thanks!
Very cool - one of my fave =VH= tunes. I just posted a version of me playing this on guitar with a cool vocals/drum/bass backtrack. Let me know what you think man. Rock on!
It is not drop D, it is actually a drop C#. For years we all thought it was drop D, but if you listen carefully, that chunky sound is much more accurate when done by lowering the E down to C#. Try it and let me know. I think drop C# is more accurate than drop D.
Drop C# is also d flat. so maybe that's where the confusion comes in. So if you have your guitar tuned down a half step and you drop to D???? Hmm.......
Very good looking out there man most dont realize.
Hey i really thought you did a good job covering this song. it looked like one of van halens easier riffs to play. I just don't understand where the notes are, maybe you can make another video and tell which frets and chords? if you could that would be so awsome, thx. EVH forever :]
I figured out the intro but its harder to figure out the first verse with the lyrics because EVH uses so many effects. A different view showing more of the fretboard would be cool
That's the sammy hagar's guitar on give to live clip!!!!! it's beautiful!!!!!

Thank you! It's actually in Dflat(guitar tuned Eflat, then drop the D).
Your guitar (and fingers!) sound superb!
It's a fine lesson, I was able to learn the fingering from you.
Sounds really weird on my SG (or just plain wrong for some reason).

@Hunkola yes in drop d .

Everybody plays this song like the tabs, the "Unchained" video when Eddie was drunk, and the way Eddie plays it now.......
But they don't play it like Eddie did in the original recording.
There is no 3-5-3 on the 5th string.
It's 3(5th string)-2 dead on the 6th, then 3(5th again)
US185VOSS2 1 year ago
You play it a little differently than I do. Nice Kramer btw.

Dude you're playing the chords in the wrong place, it doesn't sound right.
Hertsman50 1 year ago
tuning is drop d flat, and the rest of the strings are all tuned down a half step.
602KusH 1 year ago
@602KusH do there is such thing as dflat im in e flat and drop the low e to dflat .then its drop d flat right.
metalmusiqcrzy 1 year ago
I love all nobody plays this in the right tuning on youtube. it's dropped a half step.
raindance74 1 year ago
Actually, the way Eddie played it was just on the D, G, and B strings, not full barre chords. Either version sounds right enough though.
