The Beatles now dont seem impressive, but people need to take into account that it was music made over 40 years ago, that defiantly adds a sense of novelty to their music. Today, its not impressive, but I can imagine that 40 years ago, it would have blown someone's mind off. Time does matter.
@FrancisNirvana Interesting. For me, the Smashing Pumpkins were never in the league of, say, Nirvana (which is in your name). It's true that Corgan always sounded incredible, but I just don't think they reached the level of genius (like, IMO, Nirvana or Radiohead did.) But maybe I just don't know their material well enough...
And Kid A is not atonal. It is still very much grounded on pop-song structures. Everything In Its Right Place is catchy as hell. Just atypical not atonal.
Yeah well, to me it is VERY sad when a perfectly good rock band throws in the towel to focus on putting out synth-based atonal noise for the sake of "pushing the envelope" or "experimentation" or whatever other pretentious excuse they can come up with. Especially given the barren wasteland that is today's music scene. Fact is, their entire post-OK Computer discography COMBINED is not worth one track off The Bends.
@19BCG87n You don't really seem to know what you're talking about. Radiohead didn't 'throw in the towel' for the sake of experimentation, it's obvious they were pretty sick of only doing rock music and wanted to move forward into the electronic genre. Even so, from Kid A onward they do still have a lot of rock music, which is great. Most fans (myself included) like them now as much as they ever did - I happen to like synth.
You can't tell me you don't appreciate an album such as In Rainbows...
Do you really believe that, or are you just ironically responding to my somewhat closed-minded comment? :) I find it hard to believe that anyone could sincerely think that. I guess its a listenable song. Now, I like Radiohead. I certainly respect them and respect their musicianship. I appreciate their willingness to go out on a limb as well as stick it to the music industry, and TOTALLY sympathize with the view that music should be viewed as art and not a product.
Finally, I fully support their right to do whatever they want musically and "experiment" if they want to. That being SAID, I'm sorry, but I like Radiohead best as a rock band. And while there might be some decent tracks in the 14 year catalog of their work that I dismissed, as a whole it just doesn't do it for me, soundwise. You can pick it apart and say "you're wrong, look...there's a guitar riff in THIS song, and vintage Thom vocal delivery instead of distorted
mumbles in this other one, and barely any synth in this one!" That's not my point. Im just sayin, all is well and good, do what you feel like, keep making the music that makes you happy, keep messing around with synths and different rhythms and distorted vocals and strange dancing ,etc. But please, for christ's sake, ONCE IN A WHILE, fire up the amps, plug in, bang out a 4/4 rhythm, and give us a soaring, melodic, beautiful piece of rock n roll like you used to!
@mumbleinout While that guy is wrong, that too is an overstatement. The Bends deserves more respect, and I think it has some of Radiohead's best songs. Planet Telex is actually my favourite RH song overall, (Think what you will of that) and Just is an absolute classic. Not to forget Street Spirit, one of my highest rated songs by them, which I'd say is simply incredible, as beautiful as Pyramid Song...
I've got the CD's, one of them with Thom's autograph. Will always remember when he signed it (Karma police single), because I took a photo of him that he also signed two days later in another concert. I was such a freak...Loved it. Love'em.
I really enjoy these b-sides from the Computer era; just really free-wheeling and confident, and like, experimental without the fun having been compromised.
There is one difference between Lady Gaga and Madonna, One NEEDS people to write her music (Madonna, to be fair she occasionally co-writes) and the other actually attempts to write (Lady Gaga) now I dont care how bad or good you are, if you write your music and DONT use over at least 5 co-writers, it means you actually care and that is pretty respectable. People like Kesha, Katy Perry, JB, etc. they pay people to co-write music for them and then they squeeze their names in the credits.
@AirbagDeployed Its a great song even more amazing when you realise i wasn't good enough to make it on an album, but come on Personally Pyramid Song is there best but you could choose from PA, Street Spirit, The National Anthem or HTDC.
@talkingbeatlehead@dutchboy729 i oddly agree with both comments, but as i'm listening to this song again to respond to these comments, MAN is this song fantastic.

What I find incredible with Radiohead is the amount of instruments and sounds they are able to incorporate into one song. It's incredible because I find every time I listen to one of Radiohead's songs I find something new, which constantly makes it unique. I could listen to Radiohead for years and never get tired of it. Truly my favourite band.

@MrCruZ1992 Believe it or not Lady Gaga is not very original, go look up an artist called Madonna and you'll see it's all been done before
Lady Gaga is good at what she does, which is pop music, popular music for the disenchanted masses, it's fast food music, it's the equivalent of comparing McDonalds with The Fat Duck
If you really want to try claim Poker Face is better than Paranoid Android, be my guess, I'll be no part of such an idiotic discussion
@Renegademaster15 i stop reading once u mentioned lady gaga in sentences. nvm we'll try this again.. i was replying to ur comment about the beatles being "overrated" and radiohead is better than them.
if you really want to try claim radiohead is better than the beatles, be my guess,i'll be no part of such and idoitic discussion
@MrCruZ1992 It's no doubt that the Beatles are the most influential band ever, that however doesn't mean that they are the best, just because you do something first doesn't mean no one can improve on it
First time i heard this song was in Jason Dill's part in some Alien Workshop video. He had the last part, and the video opens with a telephone conversation with the team manager reminding him how important this part was for him (sleep every night, eat right, etc...). While the audio is playing, there are black and white photos of his trashed room, and his disheveled appearance. This song has kind of a "failed heroism" sound to it to me, and Dill's part was awesome over it.
All the so-called music lovers, who just want "everyone to stop arguing and just enjoy the music," must stop inculcating their assumption that all music is equal to the unwitting majority. It simply is not. Music criticism begins with this realization. Eventually, we must be able to say that Coldplay is better than Radiohead or Radiohead better than Coldplay. When we just throw up our hands before the idol of our "enjoyment", we all lose.
Noooo. Fitter Happier is the song that sort of describes the theme of the album. This song SHOULD have been on that album but it SHOULDN'T replace Fitter Happier.
@LfunkeyA Exactly. This isn't a song for OK Computer. It would have totally broken the flow of the album. It would have been great on the Bends, but any album after that? Definitely not.
@jibbyfoob In my opinion, absolutly not fitter happier is a wonderful experimentation that brings a mood fitting perfectly in the album and nice lyrics it could have replaced let down though but this is so subjective :)
@dopebozoish I know exactly what you mean. Good music is the best medication. When I'm feeling bad I jam to radiohead on my iPod and go for a nice long run.
@crazyedd123 i completely agree. usually i find it quite annoying the constant constant comparisons between muse and radiohead, because yes it's clear Muse have been influenced somewhat by radiohead, but i don't think they sound all that similar tbh in the end. But yeah, i wouldnt be surprised in the least if matt bellamy loves this song
@crazyedd123 The key difference is that radiohead are the innovators and muse are the imitators. Radiohead creates timeless masterpieces and muse creates work that will die with their fans.
ive been obsessed with radiohead b sides lately they're so amazing! even as b-sides they no joke blow away 99 percent of whats on the radio today. right now gagging order is my fav b-side
part 2 is really awesome and epic why does this song seem so obscure. its like an epic summer song (maybe cuz i started listening to it last summer :P)
Does anyone know what the name of the effect Jonny (I presume) has on his keyboard or guitar at 0:52? It's a real My Iron Lung EP effect. Sounds awesome!
I like either Amnesiac or Hail to the Thief to the best.
But, Radiohead is without a doubt my favorite band, they were the first for me to actually own the entire discography of, I don't pirate, I'm lame I know but I support my local record store.
@hashiepashi There is NOTHING to be ashamed about by supporting your local record store. It's what makes this world go around. Kudos to you, my friend.
if you like in rainbows more than ok computer you should be shot on site... how many critics top 25 albums of all time lists is Rainbows on? Cuz ok computer is usually on every one, and near the top too... Johnny Greenwoods best work right here, and this is also my fav Dill scene ever... I still have Photosynthesis on VHS
i like ok computer more, but for you to say that In Rainbows is inferior based on some snob critics' 'top 25' list....wow. You happen to be one of those toolbags who force themselves to like everything that Pitchfork gives above a 9.0 aren't you? Some people just love fucking with their mind.

@crazyedd123 The key difference is that radiohead are the innovators and muse are the imitators. Radiohead creates timeless masterpieces and muse creates work that will die with their fans.

@EmptyAffair I'm not very knowledgable in music, but I like muse and I like radiohead, I'm sure some of muse's stuff will live on.

ive been obsessed with radiohead b sides lately they're so amazing! even as b-sides they no joke blow away 99 percent of whats on the radio today. right now gagging order is my fav b-side
THeEraSerr 1 year ago 3
@THeEraSerr
Yep, same here. Actually, I've been listening to the EP's and B-sides more than I have the actual albums lately...
Strange; because the songs on the B-Side albums sound like they'd be more rock-oriented songs, and yet no one seems to know of them.

I have no idea why this and Talk Show Host didn't make it onto the Ok Computer album...

I agree, part 1 as a full version would be great!!!

Does anyone know what the name of the effect Jonny (I presume) has on his keyboard or guitar at 0:52? It's a real My Iron Lung EP effect. Sounds awesome!

@Davek1990: it's a phaser, probably the EHX small stone not sure though.

It's hard to believe this song never made it on an album as one track.
One of their best undoubtedly.

I like either Amnesiac or Hail to the Thief to the best.
But, Radiohead is without a doubt my favorite band, they were the first for me to actually own the entire discography of, I don't pirate, I'm lame I know but I support my local record store.
hashiepashi 2 years ago 55
I'd do what you do if I actually had the money, so it's not lame at all.

@hashiepashi thats not lame, thats helping music

@hashiepashi Same here. I get laughed at when I tell people that I support my favourite bands that way. :\

@hashiepashi your local record label's business cats that go "meoow we don't care about artists"*? ;)
EUmkl 1 year ago
@hashiepashi There is NOTHING to be ashamed about by supporting your local record store. It's what makes this world go around. Kudos to you, my friend.

One of their best B-sides but it sounds more Bends-y than it is Ok Computer.
SilverestFuel 2 years ago 5
That's way true. I could see it on the Bends.
ender2999 2 years ago
This and Pearly could very well be outtakes from The Bends. Both immense songs btw, just didn't have the feel of OK Computer.
SilverestFuel 2 years ago
I can easily see this on OK Computer, it suits the style very well.
Pearly, not so much.

if you like in rainbows more than ok computer you should be shot on site... how many critics top 25 albums of all time lists is Rainbows on? Cuz ok computer is usually on every one, and near the top too... Johnny Greenwoods best work right here, and this is also my fav Dill scene ever... I still have Photosynthesis on VHS
DoTheEvolution00 2 years ago
I put them on the same level. In Rainbows wasn't as groundbreaking as OK Computer, and that's usually what the critics go off.
ender2999 2 years ago
i like ok computer more, but for you to say that In Rainbows is inferior based on some snob critics' 'top 25' list....wow. You happen to be one of those toolbags who force themselves to like everything that Pitchfork gives above a 9.0 aren't you? Some people just love fucking with their mind.
