I first listened this many years ago while playing Flixmix (the Celeris game), both Prelude and Fugue are used as background music for two levels. I always thought that these tunes were beautiful, but I had no idea that Bach had composed them until today and I'm so glad I did!
@sweetheart87 "And if we look at the works of JS Bach - a benevolent god to which all musicians should offer a prayer to defend themselves against mediocrity - on each page we discover things which we thought were born only yesterday, from delightful arabesques to an overflowing of religious feeling greater than anything we have since discovered. And in his works we will search in vain for anything the least lacking in good taste." - Claude Debussy
The bit at 0:59.... do you think he played it with one hand? Or do you think he used both to play the run so fast? And would it be cheating if I did lol xD
The prelude's a little fast for my taste. I'm currently learning the prelude (can play the fugue already; overflowing with happiness!) and I feel like the true emotion (at least for me) is achieved when playing it a little.. slower. But that's just me. I've been a fan of your interpretations long before Fugues were talked about in our music class. At the time they were, we heard several fugues. And I always hummed along with the recording! Haha. I love the fugues. Great practice for me!
If this prelude is played at the standard speed, I'd hate to listen to what fast would be. It seems like this piece has turned into a Bach display-of virtuosity-and-dexterity prelude, and recording artists are afraid to play it at a non-rushed tempo like everyone else. The competitive herd mentality has diminished this piece, or maybe Bach wanted his students to play it too fast to develop their dexterity, and placed more musical considerations aside.
@matrixpachi Your grammar isn't very good. It should be: "This was composed in the Baroque period; there were no dynamic changes on the Harpsichord." The semi colon connects the two closely linked ideas.
Also, I know it was in the Baroque period and I am well aware of the constant dynamics/tempo of pieces back then (juxtaposed with the Rubato standard of the Romantic period). If you check back, I said: "I would have preferred". The version I have plays this more like a Romantic piece.
@Skwigelf100 I agree, he's a little rough with handling the prelude and the beginning of the fugue in particular. It's almost as if he wants to shout the notes at you all the way through. His emphasis is almost on everything. Lost a lot of nuance and the pure Bach peak musical moments.
@Akee1990 ah, but this is a piano and should be played as such. Bach's works may be played on harpsichord, pipe organ, clavichord, etc. each with its unique playing method. just don't play it on a cheap synthesiser
@EyMeng I agree with you. Pedal is acceptable but you're using is wrong if it gets muddy. Bach's music obviously was not composed with the intention to be played on modern day pianos so the compositions don't factor it in. Using sustain pedal must be wise and tasteful for it to work properly.
In answer to all the questions about trills: in Bach's time there were different styles from various European countries such as France, Italy and Germany. Certain styles were known for their heavy ornamentation and embellishment. There are different elements to each style, but Bach knew and wrote in all of them.
I'm wondering, could someone pls reply to me telling me the special features of the prelude part? pls and ty so much!!! i luv this peice by the way!! 8D
Sorry, I'm not sure I understand your question. But nice to know you're enjoying this!
If you're looking for more information on this prelude and others, the Wikipedia page on the Well-Tempered Clavier has excellent links (search for Siglind Bruhn or Tim Smith, for example).
i think this is what your looking for. In a prelude a certain chord progression is established in the begining, then as the piece progresses the notes modulate through different keys, but the basic form of the original progression is held in tact. i think thats right lol
@SleepyUchiha In a nutshell..,. this a simple, harmonically conceived prelude, conceptually similar to prelude #6. The subject in the right hand is made from a motif consisting of the 1st four notes and their inversion. A kind of walking bass accompanies the subect. Near the end, there's a pedal point on the dominant, some passage work, and diminished chords leading to a cadence to the tonic.
@EnigmaComposer same,,,,,, i just decided wanna go back to piano fter 2 yrs of not doin RCM... what am i etting melf into? do you know if the new books are much different from the old onesi herd that the curriculum changed and eerything?>thanks! good luck
@lovefaithpurity Yup. The curriculum changed by a lot. There are a lot more technical exercises that must be done, and they're more rigorous too. Oh well.
lol I'm struggling to get it up to speed... I might ditch the piece for something else. We'll see. I'm practicing "in tandem" with a friend who is also doing level 10 after 5 years of no rigorous practicing. That is helping me stay motivated lol

Gulda is a jazz musician ;-)
ps. Why he makes that many TRrrRRyles in fugue??
Veldionar 2 years ago
from what i'm learning in music appreciation, in the baroque era, music was usually embellished and not just played verbatim from the sheet music
