With this and only this information, I'm saving my own ass, period. And I'm keeping the life-jacket regardless; it's just simple math...she's doomed anyway and I'm not.
But if there'z something around which I might be able to use to save her life, I might bother; I'm not completely insensitive. But my life is, frankly, worth more than hers at this point.
1) How do I know she's terminally ill? Oh well... maybe she told me while on the cruise... but she could be a scammer that was trying to bilk me... hmmm
Hmmmm, you give me pause. What would I base my decision on? We are both women. She's older than me, so she's lived more of life. I guess in the end I would keep the life preserver because I have a minor child who needs me to be alive (his father is not in the picture and my parents are too old and sick to raise him.)
I thought your weakness was a nice cold pint of lager! And running off to get one in before you drown proves it. I'm with you, but knowing me I'd be so pissed I'd take the life jacket with me by mistake.
I agree. You've got to look after your own first. I wondered though, is it acceptable to let someone who's ill die in order to save someone who's currently in good health? After all, all life is equal, even the life of someone who's dying. It's tricky I think.

My response would be based on the consideration that my Children or their Mother are completely safe.
In that case, I would still give her the life jacket. I'm a good swimmer and my chances of survival are greater than hers.
Even if it meant going to my certain doom.
Again, if doing so would put my immediate family at ANY risk (including the need for me to survive), then I would put my family first.
