  • aww i have a shih tzu puppy but its a mix its called a shipo

  • Awesome video!

  • thanks to this my dog learn this trick and it took only a day. @annjhe29 try giving ur dog a tiny bit of cheese for treats.

  • my dog learned! and it only took 2 days!

  • Your Dog is very Clever !

  • What if you don't have a clicker??

  • @CombatProz501

    hiii :)

yeah i have the same problem. but you can use a pen. or as some people do if you have an ipod touch or anything like that there is an app for that on it. it works the same but i would suggest buying a clicker from your local pet store.

hope i helped :) best of luck.

  • this really helped my dog and now he can also do Hi-five its soo cute and funny thanks soo much :)

  • I just have a shih tzu and I don't know what treats he likes. What treats do u give ur dog? :)

  • Excellent! ~Pat

  • @meankid16 u could give him/her a toy or maybe just try petting him/her.

And maybe the next time u see ur vet, ask about some healthy treats that might fade into ur dogs liking. That same thing happened to my dog

  • hay what is that in your hand(do not treat than others?)

  • @DogTrainingTricks where can you get that clicky thing and what are those snacks called?

  • SUPER DOG AND SUPER LESSEN :-)

  • THANK U! :D

  • OMG!! She learned it at the end!!

    OVERDOSE OF CUTENESS... :D :D :D

  • why do you need a clicker??

  • When I try to lift my shihtzus paw up, she just like, kind of jumps away and wont let me touch it....Any advice?

  • hey that looks like my lost dog tommy that i lost in may 09 he looks just like him

  • What does the clicker do when you click it? Does it shock her or something?

  • did you do this in one day???

  • how long did this take you :P?

  • Thanks for your question - the Shake a Paw only took us a couple of days to learn. It's a pretty simple trick really and Macy already knew a fair few other tricks before this one.

All the best with your dog.

  • Very nice to see from the very start the dog learning

  • my dog looks like that but hes shih tzu and pekineese, i have 2 of them they are both brothers and one of them look more pekineese or how everu say it and the other looks more shih tzu, the one that looks like shi tzu though, when i get a treat he will sit for 2 seconds then jump up bark and keep jumping around, hard to train -.-

  • Gizmo is at a point now where I can lift his paw and he'll set it directly into my hand. But I can't seem to get him to lift his paw by himself. I've tapped his paw and everything, but it doesn't seem to work. Any advice?

  • That's a tough one, without actually seeing what Gizmo is doing.

If possible I would click and treat any slight movement of the foot. Try not to tap the foot but just leave your hand above the foot and wait for any slight movement. The moment you see a movement you should proceed to click and treat.

Hopefully Gizmo will eventually get the idea and start offering you his paw.

    Good luck with it.

  • Can you just use a pen??

  • You can use a pen, it will work.

Only problem is that your dog is likely to come across the sound and sight of pens at many times when not in a training context. Where's a clicker is unique and distinctive.

  • where can you get a clicker from?

  • Most pet stores carry clickers these days - otherwise any of the online pet stores will be able to deliver one for you. You can pick them up for a couple of bucks.

  • even pet shops in israel?

  • I admire your gentleness with the dog.

  • Thank you - she's a sweet dog and just loves learning new tricks and behaviors. I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize this.

  • my pup just falls on the flor when i try when i show him the treat he jumps in my face

  • That's a tough one.

    I would suggest the following:

Never reward this boisterous behavior with your attention or a treat - unrewarded behavior is sure to decrease.

Also try your training sessions when your dog is a little tired - straight after a long walk or romp at the dog park.

It may take a little longer to train your dog but it will be very beneficial for a dog such as this.

    Good luck with it.

  • when ever i try to put my hand on my dogs paw he bites my hand hes a 6 month old german shepherd. hes obidient but he wont let me touch his paw.

    what should i do.

  • Yes this is fairly common.

You basically need to get your dog used to/conditioned to you touching him - anytime and anywhere.

Grab some treats (and a clicker if you like) and start touching him on the feet, on the ears, in his mouth and anywhere else. When he relaxes and lets you touch him, without mouthing you, you should send a treat his way.

When he mouth's your hand, with-hold the treat - he'll work out before long that it is much better to relax and let you touch him.

    Good luck.

  • hey, i have a bernese, he has a sloppy sit when i work with him on this, does he need to be seated properly for this to work?

  • A sloppy sit is not ideal but really doesn't matter in relation to teaching the shake-a-paw.

As long as your dog has a decent sitting position and is balanced enough to sit still for more than a few seconds, you should be sweet to teach this trick.

If you are worried about your dog's sitting position you can always tighten it up using a clicker and some tasty treats.

    All the best.

  • where do you get clickers

  • Hello mate,

Any good pet store will have some clicker in stock. Expect to pay a couple of dollars for each unit.

They are well worth the money!

If you can't get to a pet store then you can order online at any of the dog supplies stores.

    Good luck.

  • aaaahhh he's? so cute i want him i want him.

  • great video i am teaching my cavalier at the moment and getting there slowly good luck she is a beautiful dog 5*****

  • Thanks for your comments - all the best with your Cav.

  • Cute dog, my shih tzu looks exactly like that. But my dog doesn't seem to learn this trick. Would a pen also work as a clicker?

  • A pen is fine to use but I'd have to say a clicker is a better alternative. The beauty with the clicker is that it delivers an immediate, distinctive and unique signal to your dog.

    Good luck with your Shih-Tzu.
