Yep these tests are dangerous, BUt better that they are done to prove the safety of the plane in extreme attitudes, rather that than NOT test it, and find that on tail strike the rear end of the plane falls off.... Test Pilots are a Dangerous breed, but the tests are planned to minimise the risk...

FAA certification takes time, costs money, and saves lives.

I don't think anything pilots do or anything that involves aviation is considered "dangerous" since pretty much everything we do is well planned and calculated to the minimum, also goes with standard procedures. Just my own opinion from what we do before a flight, during and after.

Yeah, this is a standard test, but it didn't go exactly according to plan, there's a metal plate they put on a bar that sits on the tail part of the fuselage and this is supposed to strike the ground. It does, but the end part of the fuselage strikes the ground as well, that had to be replaced with a sheet of whatever the aircraft was made of. The tail is not supposed to strike :P

VMU test - Velocity Minimum Unstick - they need to know the minimum speed the airplane will get off the ground at different weights and flap settings. This data goes into the airplane manual.

It's a tail strike test.

The plane is special prepared for this tests s. at 29 sec. ......... the little "tail" you see!
