Ancient astronaut theory is what proves god (and really all deity religions) to be misinterpretations of advanced beings visiting earth in the distant past. Call me crazy, but i'll say the same to you if you think Earth is the only planet that has intelligent (LOL Humans intelligent, right) life on it.
Though I wouldn't say ALL religions are a sham. I myself am fond of a few Asian philosophies. Taoism, Hinduism, Buddhism, they're all perfectly fine. Most everyone else is the cause of war.
A new poll by Pew came out today that showed that the majority of church going Americans support the torture of suspected terrorists while the majority of non-church goers do not support the torture of terror suspects.
It's....true, what this guy is saying. I grew up feeling scared and guilty all the time and I still feel that guilt. It's not just church, it's how they scare you with your own religion. I'm on medication, the only way to calm down after panic attacks I get.
I agree - stay away from religion. But Don't give up God. Jesus came to take down the churches of his day because of what they had done to his people and nothing has changed. Christians simply turned the new faith into the old one. They have taken the power of Jesus' body and blood from his people and then told them to do it on thier own. Which causes fear and guilt. "Unless you eat my body and drink my blood there is no life in you."
The way I see it is...I'm going to be dead A LOT longer than I'm alive here on Earth. Eternity is forever, and so therefore NOTHING matters to me in this world more than my salvation. God Bless.
You felt guilty because yes, the norm these days are far from what people SHOULD behave like based on Christian faith. Society now adays is so corrupt and sinfull. I think it's easier to part from those habits as you get older and mature and have studied the Bible yourself. At a young age (teens/early 20's) peer pressure and trying to fit in makes it hard...but when you get older you realize it doesn't matter what people think about you, only what you do to walk in Jesus' path.
Modern society is a lot better than it was in the past. The norm was to kill people that didn't think like you. Morals change over time. According to the bible black people were/are inferior, as were/are women, but now that is largely ignored due to modern secular standards. Now homosexuals, heretics and non-believers are the focus of today. Sin and corruption is relative to the times, your environment, religion, and whether you were taught to think or not.
I attribute most of my mental problems (anxiety, OCD) to the brainwashing I received as a youngster. I didn't go to church when I was younger and when I told people that I had just been raised like that, they told me I was going to hell. So, as a guillible little kid I believed them.
They never told me that I could be saved or anything like that so I thought it was final that I was going to hell. So, ages 10-12 were hellish. Kind of ironic isn't it?
THat was very similar to my experience, but I am not soo mad at religion as some people who use religion as an excuse to oppress others (ie, chrisians who might otherwise be wife-beating drunks, use strict religion as an outlet for their need to control)

real christians wouldn't drink or have sex outside of marriage. You have guilt because u did these things, but if u repent God will take away ur guilt. you probably didn't repent because u wanted to keep enjoying these sins, so instead u left the church and are now on a road to hell.
Mental torture is far worse than physical, especially when done to children. It's understandable that people want to raise kids the way they want but they must resist any form of indoctrination on the young. Most will not come to their own conclusions, that is the purpose of indoctrination. Parents should wait until a child is old enough to think for itself.
That is really hard to do though (raise children under certain values without indoctrinating them.) BTW, I agree with almost everything you said, although I don't know if mental abuse is worse than physical. I would be interested to read any studies about children raised in cults or cult-like environments.
It is hard to measure mental as compared to physical torture, which has more recognisable traits. It varies from person 2 person. Tortures know that no matter what they do to their victim's body it means nothing if they can't break their will. Unfortunately I don't know of any studies off-hand but will post if I find any. Physical torture often causes mental torture, which is the whole idea, it is just a tried and tested method for the short run.
I don't agree with psychological torture, but I do agree that kids are forced to feel they have to be good righteous people because of God. I think you should be a good, righteous person even if there is no God. People that do it only to make it into their heaven: no. You're not getting in. Hardest mission is doing the right thing on your own, not with someone breathing down your neck. How's that for a challenge typical Christian?
Teach your own children what you think is right. If it harms people physicly, they should be stopped, but if not, leave them alone. Like yourself, they will come to their own conclusion. Everyone butting into everyone elses business.
No, F*** you, I don't think you understand what some people go through. At the very least, I should have been given a balanced opinion. When you are that young, you imprint things that can NEVER be reversed. Dumbass people shouldn't be allowed to screw up their kids for life. If someone had intervined in my case, I absolutely would be much more well-adjusted, happy, and normal today.
and you felt guilty for so many things for so long i can almost put money on the fact that you didn't have much to do with it .

Righteous people, they say.
Someone who does "good" because he's told he's going to suffer if he doesn't - what is that?
kindness?
caring?
love?
NO
It's called SELFISHNESS!
Someone who care but about THEIR FUCKING SELVES.
The TRUE righteous aren't COERCED.
They act by their own will, in the hope of truly helping others - not as a mean to save themselves.
