i think the greatest achievement made during the middle ages was the creation of a nation. before then city-states were only in existence however the creation of a nation-states allowed common culture to develope.

Actually, they did. It was quite common for Roman soldiers to ride on their horses barebacked, or with just a blanket on the horse's back. And yes, such a thing is possible; I've done it myself. The problem is, many of the said soldiers, when trying to throw a spear or cross swords with the enemy, fell off their horses.
Horses also had plenty of problems walking on the rocky, uneven Roman roads, and usually had to be put down when their hooves broke.

The Dark Ages largely effected Byzantium and Rome. Western Europe had brief set back and quickly recovered. Western Europe had a number of Renaissances while the East was still stagnant. Too understand this time period you need to read Celtic and Germanic history. Writing was not lost in Western Europe.

The dark ages were not called the dark ages because it was technologically inept in comparison to other Graeco/Roman, Eastern or enlightenment cultures, but because Historians have relatively less historical material for finding out about the period. It is called 'dark' because Historians, for a long time, were in the 'dark' when thinking about them. Only very recent archaeology has uncovered information about the period. Historians DO STILL use the term 'Dark age' to describe 500-900AD.

Since the Early Middle Ages centred around the Germanic peoples not the Romans, it's wrong to refer to the period as 'Dark Ages' in Europe at all.

I agree with Fuelban, our 20th century was far more deadly then the medieval period. Even in disease: the epidemic that caused the most deads was the spanish flue (1914) not the black death. I do not wish to say the medieval period was better or so: not at all. But there's no proof we are more civilised let be humane. Also: the period before the medieval period wasn't so much better and the Renaissance? well: during that period people also burnt many 'witches': something to think about.

What you're forgetting is that we have a sophisticated press system that hyper-focuses (rightfully) on conflicts -- which are far more isolated and less severe than they were during those times. Death toles towered over what we see in this day and ate. Cynical people who don't understand modern civilization and how it compares to the past annoy me. The past was NOT romantic, it was dirty.

The term Dark Ages is no longer used by the historical community anymore. They were not so dark as people believed. the 6th century was very caothic and 14th and 15th centuries were completily disastrous with the black plague, social degradations, wars and famines, etc. But the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries were very prosperous, they had a stable economic growth, relative political stability, large technological advances, intelectual growth with the development of universities and arts, etc.

There were numerous technological advances made during the Middle Ages that are taken for granted today, such as windmills, water mills, universities, stirrups and saddles for horses, chimneys, fireplaces, the compass, firearms, horse shoes, capitalism, the clock, and an incredible number of tremendous improvements in the field of agriculture.

Actually, they did. It was quite common for Roman soldiers to ride on their horses barebacked, or with just a blanket on the horse's back. And yes, such a thing is possible; I've done it myself. The problem is, many of the said soldiers, when trying to throw a spear or cross swords with the enemy, fell off their horses.
Horses also had plenty of problems walking on the rocky, uneven Roman roads, and usually had to be put down when their hooves broke.

The Dark Ages largely effected Byzantium and Rome. Western Europe had brief set back and quickly recovered. Western Europe had a number of Renaissances while the East was still stagnant. Too understand this time period you need to read Celtic and Germanic history. Writing was not lost in Western Europe.

There was tonnes going on, just not recorded properly and that is why it is the Dark Ages. It was the rejection of everything that came before that really stagnated that era, plus the major leaders were illiterate for the first time in 1500 years. That did not help LOL!

1100's and 1200's were actually pretty good time to live if compared to 1500's to 1600's, because there were no inquisition, no witch hunt in the 12th century. The Renaissance era seems to be more like Dark Ages than the Middle Ages.

Here's a simple analogy to help understand the Dark Ages. Imagine USA is Rome. Rome falls. The individual states begin to battle for power, control and territory. Residents are considered serfs. Food becomes scarce. Travel becomes dangerous. Gangs of bandits thieve and steal. Health care and sanitation break down. Superstition and rumor erode common sense. There ya go, the Dark Ages.

Fair enough, my analogy was more about lifestyle and less about unfunded liabilities, factional politics, and wanton corruption. USA has a dynamic bureaucracy with checks and balances on the power elite, however do keep tabs on the food situation. The mortgage meltdown started when people with stretched credit opted for groceries instead of making the house payment. The imperialist model might just be "the dollar."
