I use Blackmagic Video Recorder to convert VHS, Betamax, and other ancient video formats. Works great. Cost me a shit load of money (it cost atleast a shit load of money to me...) "151 euros".
But I do recommend this hardware + software bundle.
The cheap way to do this is to this is to take a VHS Player and connect it to a PC or Mac with a TV Tuner Card. Connect a coaxial cable wire from the output port from the VHS to the input of the TV Tuner card. Press Play on the VHS. On the computer, press record. Save the movie file to the disk. When done, you can now burn the DVD to the disc! I want to do this sometime with my Sony VAIO and my iMac!
yes, i'm very interested in this as well. i have the mac and the old vhs tapes. i'm wondering what the best playback would be---is svhs the way to go? what do you think is the cheapest highest quality solution?
You've probably seen my comment on your G4 video, I posted as EmmaWatsonLova...wtf....again...wtf...anyways, David's idea of showing us a tour of your Mac setup would be a FANTASTIC idea, love Macs!
i want a mac so bad to bad best buy didnt sell any mac's wen i wanted a computer so i had to settle for a computer that freezes every time i type and that catches a virus everytime i go to a website
David - yes, good idea! Did I tell you that my family calls my condo "Best Buy", "Circuit City", "The Warehouse", "The Bat Cave", and "The Apple Store by the Beach" LOL! - Thanks for re-watching! - Alfred
Just looking out for you brother... I hope that Apple doesn't realize when you upload the "internal video". Otherwise, you just might be hearing from Steve...
Very cool! I haven't taken a serious look at purchasing equipment, but it's been in the back of my mind for a while to try to get my old VHS movies converted to DVD, & get rid of that stuff. Also interesting how miniscule your laptop is to all that other bulky equipment. :)
I'm exporting a video in iMovie right now so I figured I would watch this again! =D Man I love your passion for technology so much. It's awesome! *beep* It's done exporting! Yayyy... hahahaha! Also we have that same LED clock to your right (left for me). That thing's pretty cool, huh? Anyway, sorry I haven't been on Halo 2 lately. Tomorrow night, though... I'm back! Sooo get ready to be bagged!
oh man! i saw the video leading the way! i want that tape!!! LOL man i cant wait to watch a good quality version of that! my version is very very bad!
Hey Pookie -- Canopus ADVC-300 Converter, which talks to the Mac via FireWire. A driver is loaded in from the manufacturer, and then iMovie sees it as an external video device. You can't control the actual tape transport, but importing is a snap - press play on the device, and then import in iMovie. Thanks for watching! - Alfred.
It looked real straight forward. Since it uses firewire it has nice transfer speeds. I am in the same boat with having a bunch of older stuff that needs transfered.
I will have to share my research with you, as well as discuss your budget. The item I purchased was total overkill, at $500 -- you absolutely DO NOT need to piss away that much. Email me your AIM account as well as you real email address and we will discuss. - Alfred
is this what you still recommend 11 months later? i'm not sure if canopus has come out w/ anything new. what do you suggest for playback? are all s-vhs playback machines created equal? what about a vcr w/ a firewire jack?
Very nice! I think that's the first time I have ever seen your PowerBook G4. I love it! =D That digitizer still amazes me how it's so small... you have to love technology. Anyway, I can't wait to see all these videos! It's going to be so... insanely great! 5 stars, + favorite
Hey Dave! Thanks for watching... and rating... and making it a favorite! I am uploading some 'home movies' first - you'll see me booth my IIci for the first time. Wow. Wait till you see the Z.Caravicci pants and the 'wife beater' Italian T-Shirt! LOL! TTYL - Alfred.
Hey, thank you for sitting through that vid -- not the most exciting one in the world, but thank you for watching (and rating I hope). Make sure you watch RenFest, Goth, Christmas, and DuelingDragons:Fire for some vids with a little more action! - Alfred
LOL. First of which, ditch the hard drive when you're done and burn to DVD to get it off the magnetic mechanically-prone media. Secondly, you'll take a generational loss from converting those old tapes, so what you have is probably too good qualitywise. =) Lastly, watch your permissions with those old tapes. Wouldn't want them turning around and going "Uhh. This dude is disseminating internal information." No matter how old it is, you know how lawyers get. :-P Have fun. :-)
Hi Jay - excellent points, as always. I commented on each point in an email I sent you regarding archiving (it will go to a DAT backup and DVD), signal loss (with my setup, mine look like 'gold masters' compared to what's out there), as well as showcasing it (these videos will be private to the elite few). More to come! - Alfred
Oh wow, i noticed your clock where the dial goes from side to side and shows the time & the date! I love them things lol My sister had one and, call me weird, i was staring at it for hours LOL! Another great video! Can't wait for the next. Much love xXx
Hi Amy & Chelsie - Thank you for enjoying this small 'technical' video. The actuall 'stuff' will be coming soon -- including a segment I did on television back in 1984 -- wait until you see my haircut! LOL! - Alfred
Hey Andy! Thanks for watching -- scope out RenFest - THAT is really entertaining! This was boring techno-babble. But I'm glad you enjoyed it, and if you liked THIS, you will love RenFest and the others. Thanks for the comment! - Alfred.
You could be doing a video of the differences between toliet paper and I will still enjoy seeing what makes you tick...hee...hee...Jar of pus...Hilarious!
Hmm. Great concept. Do I have to wipe on camera? LOL! Thanks for watching, Jen. And to my friends reading these comments, scope out Jen's videos -- they are really well edited, and the content is funny!! - Alfred
Warning. This video has a high geek factor. Don't watch it unless you want to see how I am converting ratty old video tapes into a digital format. Enjoy. Alfred.
Do you remember, or know if that unit has a built in Time Base Corrector?

This can be done with any A/D converter with any VHS player and any computer now.
You can also spend thousands on Adobe software if you want.
medicfl1 4 years ago
how do you do that, and where do you get this A/D conveter??
