Jamie Carragher complemented his (Kelly's) talents by saying "I was in the stand against Everton and when he made that run past Leighton Baines, I thought it was Thierry Henry against me all those years ago. It was turbo charged."
As a Liverpool Season Ticket Holder, Ive seen Martin kelly play many times in the flesh, he is a better defender than Glen Johnson, maybe not quite as good as Glen at going forward though he is a good attacker , he looks much bigger in person ,quick for a big man, strong in the tackle and will at some point end up as a Liverpool centre half
@forkerball he is a better defender than Glen for sure but his attacking run up isn't that bad either because he is a natural CB, a future Liverpool CB and captain imo. Kelly/Coates partnership in the future YNWA.
@yelaiyi So its also a waist of C. Ronaldo's height not to play him at CB? and Carroll? and Crouch? and Gerrard, who is a clear 2-3 inches taller than Carragher? and Torres, who is taller than Gerrard? Players' positions should never be defined by their size. Take Puyol for instance. 5'9 and has been one of the best CBs in the world. Cannavaro is 5'8 and was the best CB in the world. Franco Baresi one of the best Cbs of all time also 5'8. Height is by no means everything.
@AlexSnowBob Ur point is true...But have u seen an established full back that is 1.9m???The only 2 full backs that i rmb that are tall is only abidal and Corluka. The best full backs are normally all 1.7m.
@yelaiyi so???? that's my point exactly. why the hell should we decide that someone can't play somewhere because of their size. should xavi play on the wing instead of in central midfield because he is only 5'8? No!! height is irrelevant. skill is not.
Kelly should be at centre back with Agger, they should bring in Jose Enrique to play at left back and have flannegan at right back, that defence would be impenetrable
@Hazzabazza951 People need to calm down and realise that the only way these kids can reach their potential is by care and patience. Any kid - particularly in defence - who plays too much either suffers from burnout later in their career, or, worse, their naivety becomes apparent through small errors that wouldnt be made by a seasoned pro. These errors are exploited, the kid is made to look like a mug, and suffers a sometimes irreparable blow to their confidence. Thats what happened to Insua.
@Beatdown2k8@LFCTrayno Carra's had two things going for him his entire career. His never say die attitude and his leadership.
Kelly has so much more than Carra ever did, pace,he can pass, he's two footed, he can cross and he's intelligent when he has the ball. None of the Carra hoofs about with him.
If you still think Carra is the dogs bollocks then your kidding yourself lad.
@LFCTraynor Don't chat shite lad. Carra is a great pro, thats why he's got so many games he has. He'd run through brick walls for this club. But he aint that talented, never was. You can ask the coaches who worked with him as young lad for both club and country on that if you ever meet one.
We'd be no different without him, you actually sound like Carra is the first and only good CB that we've had. Yeats, Smith, Hansen,Hyypia,Thommo all better than him and there will be more in the future.
@LFCTraynor Carra is not one of the best Centre backs in the world anymore. Nothing close, Agger is the only one of our current lot who can hold that. And Carra was within a whisker of being released at 15 from liverpool, he's never been a naturally talented footballer, he's just been a hard worker and intelligent.
Kelly has always been one of the clubs standout young players. Injuries permitting the lad has a natural class of a young maldini, Carra never had that.
he's got pace and knows how to use it:) he'll be one of pools best backs in the future if the development keeps going like this. sad about his injury though:(

his defends is good, his run is good, but only 1 poor thing his pass and crossing is poor .. just a pity

@StanleySantoso his crossing and passing is superb, it wasnt the best here but it normally is.
19Wylds95 3 months ago
@19Wylds95 His crossing is poor as is Johnson's but Kelly is big, strong, good in the air, quick and tidy on the ball.

@SukhoiSu37Terminator Who does? He's probably quicker than Johnson.

@8gerrard8 No way, Johnson is quicker than Kelly

@SuperKaulo Johnson looks slugish when tracking back and keeping up with wingers, he only looks quick going forward whereas Kelly can do both.

@8gerrard8 Thats true, Johnson's acceleration is not as good as Kelly's

has it ever crossed kenny's mind playing kelly on right wing in front of glen johnson at right back and they both interchange? :D
