i quite enjoy listening to mr. vidal's point of view. my only complaint would be that hearing his voice instills in me an inexorable desire to clear my throat
Please, correct me if im wrong but the british decolonization of india doesnt seem to me to be forced by american hand. From what i've read there is an interesting background story to indian independence that he seems to be ignoring. To say the united states somehow negotiated india's independence seems to belittle all the act of defiance and rebellion of the native population.

all kids in america should be forced to read the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich so that we all can see and know how governments can so easy be taken over in any time. Look what Napoleon did? sad to say Obama is a puppet not a true leader
It's no surprise that the U.S. President didn't want any rival empires in the world.
The rest of the world had lost their industrial and manufacturing capacity and the U.S. was in a dominant position for decades. It was a good run, now ended.
27 seconds in and i can't help but stop and ask: why the fucking hell are we still pronouncing 'nuclear' wrong?
every time someone in the media pronounces nuclear as 'nukular,' it's like a symbolic head nod to bush. stop that!
according to msm, 68% of americans disapprove of the president. i think it's time to return an onomotopea pronounciation; it's safe now. otherwise, learn how to fucking talk.
'until the right-wingers got a hold of it, who think all foreigners are bad'.
The only positive thing this administration may have done is forced more people in the U.S. to pay attention to what we did have and how devastating our foreign policies have been to the rest of the world.
An empire is not sustainable as an island. Those same policies will are eating us up too. The empire is really .01% of the elite population. Everyone else is dogmeat.
The great empires should have stayed in business as a counter balance. Some of those regions would have been more stable if they remained under colonialism clearly has shown that violence and break up is what resulted in India.
Correct me if I'm wrong, you mean bye your words that's the western civilization have the only right of freedom of choice and the rest of the world "colonize" have only one right to obey your view, sorry but are you fully understand the concept you giving, this is the root of evil this is the roots of racism
transnational megacorporations are the new domain of power, their wealth and influence is deep and pervades the planet, largely unchecked and unquestioned, and their hegemonic ascension will continue
Gore is a great analysit and phlosopher in international affiars, some time he step out of line like all of us but the wise old man has a enriched message to all of us in which we should envisioned the future......great respect for him.
My goodness, what a joyless man. Despite the self-righteous veneer he is so obviously obsessed with "power". And despite the "sophistication" he hasn't a single solution. ALL complaints. Is it hatred? Or well projected self-hatred?
Was this guy always such a scumbag or has senility finally overtaken him? He believes in the moral equivalence of American capitalism and Soviet communism. He reminds me of the mad Ezra Pound who defended Mussolini unto the last--except Pound was a genius. Vidal was never more than a talent (for those with a strong stomach, Vidal's novel "Myra Breckinridge" really is hilarious).
mick - i don't get the same perspective as what you have mentioned. he seems quite coherent and with regards to capitalism, it in itself is great,... unless it overruns the government and corruption takes hold and we are led to wars to earn capitalists more money.

I find grand conspiracies always to be highly suspect. The common belief that the Iraq war was concocted by greedy Bush backers with a view to enriching themselves assumes a scarcely credible degree of corruption and cynicism and arrogance. The invasion was justifiable on several grounds.
The incompetence of the occupation, however, was so complete and such a public humiliation for the Bush administration that I hardly know how to analyze it. We are seeing played out before us the dumbest foreign policy blunder in American history.
I am more than happy to criticize Bush, for whom I feel great contempt. I think he ought to resign as a matter of moral obligation, citing mental incapacity to perform his duties. But, I prefer to do so within the context of at least some evidentiary support--after all, there is no shortage of this material and the stockpile increases daily.
scarcely credible? I didn't used to believe such corruption could survive for so long undetected either. But it does. And to a greater extent than most people will ever accept.
themediaranter - what he says is that Russia would not agree that the Americans single handedly won WWII because without the massive ground armies of the Russians the war would not have been won. We were allies with the Russians during WWII. He's an old guy, and too bad. He's an extremely well educated historian.
Do you know something called history? Do you know that Russian till this day celebrate the memory of winning the II world war greatly. The Russian was in Berlin before the rest the Russian suffered like no others the numbers counts in millions but nobody remembers that. Or nobody care they are Russian, huh
Do you know the Battle of Stalingrad? Read it's for free in wiki. Or I think it easier for you to tell what the other are saying than facing the truth.
If this is in reference to what Gore Vidal said, he was critisisng the American belief that they won the war single handedly. It must be remembered that the RAF won the air war, the US saved the British at sea and Russia won the ground war. America funded the whole thing but actually saw very little action. This is why America rose to tower above the other 2 powers so quickly.
I thought that the U.S won the air war. The British contribution was hanging on long enough until the U.S. entered the war.
The U.S. was doing the daytime bombing of Germany and Occupied Europe. The British had had enough of the enormous daytime bombing losses by then. There is a memorial outside Oxford to 50,000 U.S. airmen who gave up their lives for that.
Admittedly the air war was heavily supported by America but most of the major air raids were oversaw by British high command. And please note when I say British I am not specifically referring to British nationals as many of the pilots in the RAF were either from the Empire or occupied Europe e.g. Poland.
Thanks saintee1000. Very gracious. My last post was a windup, in reply to the short-hand youtube comment length forces on us. Not to be taken literally. My (little) knowledge of the air war comes from Len Deighton Fighter and Bomber, plus WWII British pilot's books, so could use some improvement.
The British won the Battle of Britain with Commonwealth assistance. Of particular note were Polish pilots and Canadian material aid and the pilot training programme created in Canada for Commownealth pilots to have a safe place to train. American help was huge, and most certainly welcome, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it was own by the Americans.
the air war was a disaster, and strategic bombing, to this very day, is a disaster. it is not only ineffective it is cowardly. all the British proponents (and the American) subscribed to Douhet's theories. they kept changing the goals and theories to match the ground truths they were up against. suggest you read John Mosier's works. Even the BBC's documentary on the air war questions the rationality of the campaign.

First of all, it is spelled "onomatopoeia", and using that, NUKULAR would be spelled
KA-BOOM.
Also, if I may, it is "learn to fucking speak", not talk.
