when your not in a 3G area it switches EDGE its a problem that has pissed off a few ppl here in australia when many ppl are trying to access wifi networks to many wifi connections on the router it will switch the phone to the EDGE network to take the load off hope that answers the question you asked at the start

Btw, iPhone 3G does have A2DP chip in it. But it is Apple's call to allow that in a software update. Apple is putting a lot of restriction on iPhone Bluetooth and my gut feeling tells me that it is possibly they don't want us to share our music via bluetooth (kinda a long shot) & HSDPA tethering.
